Somerset Valley YMCA

I’ve been coming to this Y for about a year. All of the employees seem to be really nice, pleasant. All the members that I’ve been around are there to take care of business which is what I like. No one is wasting time taking selfies. I used to go to Planet Fitness and it was always so busy unless you were lucky enough to workout in the middle of the night like 1 am. I like that the fitness center at the Y is small. A large space like Planet Fitness can be intimidating to some. The weight room is separate from the treadmills, bikes, ellipticals, and the other equipment. The machines are not broken down like some reviewers have mentioned. They also have free exercise classes, open gym, access to the pool, and babysitting for the mommies and daddies. Oh and I almost forgot about their epic vending machine. It’s full of healthy options rather than junk. How great is that? Pretty great.

Don’t bother joining if you’re looking for a real gym experience. The equipment is falling apart and there are very few of each to use. Plan to wait a while if you want to do something as simple as run on the treadmill or lift some weights. Speaking of which, the pool is ridiculously crowded. My husband hoped to use it for lap swimming to help with arthritis but could never get in. I tried a couple of the classes but they crammed as many people as they could into the gym. Can’t believe the cost for this sad excuse of a gym. Cost us about $ 50/​person/​month. If you live in Somerville, you’re better off making the drive to a different gym.

The worst!!! The place is a mess and actually smells sometimes (like mold, sweat and worse). Staff is rude. I canceled my membership 2 months ago and they are still withdrawing funds from my account. When I called about it, instead of just telling me they would refund the $$, they gave me a huge attitude and told me they’d have to look into it. Still waiting. Furious.
My child attended the after school program there. The kids ran wild in that place. I had to call the director once and couldn’t get her. My voicemail went unreturned. Had to deal with her another time over the phone and she was rude and not helpful at all. The counselors were ok. They were just kids and meant well. My kids are now in the alternative after school program offered at their school and they are much happier.
