Downtown Shoes is a hometown quality shoe store. They are knowledgeable and professional. Rick even remembers my shoe size! I buy all(mostly all) my shoes here. Quality shoes that are good for your feet at competitive prices. 5 stars all the way.

I used to love this place, and I’ve been around since it was«Hammond Shoes» rather than«Downtown Shoes.» I moved to Berkeley for college last year, and I went to Downtown Shoes to get a good pair of boots for the winter. The person there sold me a pair of 200 dollar Sanita’s when I told him my situation: I walk a lot, I walk in the rain, and I want a shoe with good arch support. The shoes worked wonderfully for months, and I could rely on them for basically anything. Then, suddenly, a rainy day came this last week, and the inside of the shoe ripped. I bought these shoes for 200 dollars, and before I’d had them for a year, something went wrong. When I took them to the shoestore this week while visiting, I hoped they might be able to fix the shoe or do something about the rip. I explained how surprised I was that I’d bought these expensive shoes, expecting quality, and now they were broken and needing repair. She said, «Well, those shoes aren’t designed to be worn every day.» And her tone wasn’t at all helpful, but rather blameful. I immediately said, «Then they shouldn’t have been sold to me.» She just shrugged and said«Well I don’t know what to tell you.» I’m shocked at how I was treated. This place, to me, seems all about the sale. When shoes break or tear, the people who work there suddenly claim that, «Well, these shoes aren’t made for this, that, etc,» rather than taking responsibility for their merchandise that wasn’t reliable. As well, they are being irresponsible sellers, because they hype the shoes, sell them for a steep price, and shrug when you come in wondering what happened to a shoe that might have malfunctioned. This is my experience with this Downtown Shoes. It’s disheartening when you spend hundreds of dollars on what you think will be a good pair of shoes, have a problem with the shoes after only about 6 months of wear on them, and then find that the sellers essentially tell you to deal with it. When you spend that much money for quality, the service should be quality, too. I don’t think I’ll ever shop there again.

A nice location in downtown Sonora for the purchase of new shoes. I like the display window, always creative offering the viewer multiple styles of both woman’s and men’s shoes. If you like to support local merchants, you will not find a shop more«Main Street» Next to Courthouse Park.
