At first we were excited! Fondue! Sourdough bread! And, finally! A place with Pepsi instead of Coke! But, right away it went weird when the waitress said she preferred Coke when I told her how excited I was because of how hard it is to find places that served Pepsi. She wasn’t very polite, but she was speedy, and that’s what matters in the end. Or so we thought. We both ordered pepper steaks. Tri-tip covered in sauteed red bell peppers! Uhm, that sounds delicious! He wanted medium and I, medium rare. We both got rare with no medium in sight and neither of us got any red bell peppers OR tri-tip. Instead some sort of mystery meat(perhaps sirloin) covered in crisp, barely cooked and very green bell peppers. We decided to not make a big deal of it. We were still riding the high of getting to see Deadpool sans kids and that movie was fantastic! Epicly so. Anyway, right about now the waitress comes by to pick up our glasses for refills. She, with her bare hands that I had just witnessed her bussing tables and touching people’s used silverware with, took out my straw and placed it on the table. I figured she was going to replace the straw with a new one for some reason, but when she got back, she picked the straw back up off of the table and put it back into my glass. I’m not a restaurant scientist, or anything, but I’m pretty sure that restaurant tables are not the cleanest and I’m also pretty sure that having your waitresses buss the tables and then go directly to touching people’s straws is not the most sanitary move. I’m also pretty sure that restaurant tables are not something that any of us would feel comfortable coming in direct contact with our food. After all, that white rag that they use to clean the tables off with gets used over and over again all day. Imagine, if you will, a scene from some end of days movie where a plague is decimating mankind, the scene where infected people are talking and it shows the fine mist of infected saliva flying through the air and covering the surrounding surfaces with its infectedness. You don’t want to, you say? Well, I don’t blame you! I didn’t want to either, last night, but I couldn’t NOT imagine it. We then decided it was time to leave. I love that they are open late but that’s the only plus I can give them besides the delicious sourdough. The waitress we had was rudeish and unsanitary and the fondue had a weird flavor to it and was brought out cold. Our meals were both $ 20 each and not even close to what the menu described.

Bad place to go waitresses are verbally harassed in front of customers. Food good but not great. I would go to BlackOak Casino it’s better. Gus is mean to his employees in front of customers. If I could give 0 stars I would

DISAPPOINTING!!! The food was NOT good and the service was WORST! My uncle drove us half hour to eat at Gus Steakhouse, won’t do it again. The waitress left before we were done eating. We called another waitress over to bring the check after waiting 20 minutes. She apologized and made excuses. As we were walking out our waitress walked out of the restaurant bar with Gus and they both looked down as they walked by us. No one asked us why our plates were half eaten.

Good food, cozy place, decent price. The steak was cooked to order and my wife liked her lobster. Decent bar. Larger portions. Will eat there again if in the area.

This place would be the best steakhouse in Sonora, if there was only one. Since there are more, it is way, way lower on the list. Like worst. Gus, the owner, is a full blown jerk. If you arrive as a single diner, be prepared to wait and wait as tables are filled with parties of 4 or more who did NOT have reservations and arrived well after you did. Gus doesn’t want to give up a table to a single. Gus gets a load on and loves to chew out his employees in front of the guests. I think he must have a very small unit. The food is way sub-par. The cheese fondue is nasty. The bread is just white bread, no character. The pasta side dish tastes like ketchup poured over overcooked pasta. The salad is straight out of the supermarket bagged stuff. The steaks are sometimes good, but seldom cooked the way you ask. The place is dirty, parking is a problem. Don’t bother.

Really good place for a casual home-cooked style meal in Sonora! Prices are very reasonable and food and service is great. Steaks are cooked perfectly. The early bird 2 for $ 20 deal can’t be beat. There are so many menu choices you can easily find something you’ll enjoy. Full bar service too. We’ve been here twice and will be here any time we come to Sonora.

No complaints about the service or the food, but the owner Gus doesn’t know how to respect any of the employees that work for him. I found him to belittle the waitresses and he ran around barking out orders as though his employees didn’t have a clue on what had to be done. It was obvious that his employees didn’t need to be one step on what they had to accomplish. I’m actually surprised that he had any employees at all! With out his presence my experience would have been great…

The bread and cheese fondu is the best to have. Our waitress was Kristen. She was very nice and attentive. If u ask for a med rare steak, make sure that’s what U want, bcuz it comes very rare. I had the filet minion, and it was kinda tough. My parents had prime rib. They said it was ok. Very busy on a Sat night but the owner has those girls busting their tails off!

I loved it here. Great service, great atmosphere, great food & wonderful owner. It was great to see the owner out on the floor greeting each person that came in & walking around the dining room making sure everyone was happy, you don’t see that much now a days.

There’s a reason Gus’s Steakhouse has been open this many years. Great steaks and excellent service.

We pass this small itsy bitsy building every time we shop at Sonora Safeway and always say we have to try that place. Finally we did, and wow. It is a bustling place, with what can be a long wait, so thank goodness there is a bar, and a cool bar at that, filled with lots of local posters and interesting people, AND they have Drambuie. The dining room next door is old Greek style, large round leather booths and larger family tables. The smell when you walk in is enough to make your taste buds scream for attention. The menu is just ridiculous. THEN they handed us the early bird special menu. Two dinners for $ 20, I kid you not. Thinking this was going to be the cheap special? Nah. Salmon and hamburger steak, the dill sauce was yummy, I could not finish my meal that includes salad or soup, the plastic plates(barely discernible as such until you hoist the plate) don’t diminish the classic style, the service was very good(waving at Brittany) and you best save room for the desserts that include bread pudding. $ 32 with my Drambuie. The minestrone? We have traveled hundreds of miles for soup that good. Goodness. And reserve time to go through the huge menu, too, it is going to take a while. One detriment, it was very noisy but David can take out his hearing aids, too.

One of the best dam Chicken Parm I have ever had ever.!. Portion size could be a little bigger like 2 vs the sides that I got where cooked great — normally when you get veggie and tend to see garlic there is always alot in it how ever there was none. Seriously the chicken parm was that good I would go back for that. Just few points try to go when not busy, decided a group of 4 of us was in a large back room where there was 3 birthday parties plus winning kids if you can hang with that then ok. There where a few minor hi cups on serving waited for 5 mins on re fills understanding room was full and the food was great thus still a 5 star review on the food alone. Everything was timed out well also the others prime rib looked amazing and alot larger portion sizes I have seen for 19.95 $ plus sides. Worth family outing etc — they have full service bar and side room too for smaller parties.

I’ve eaten here a few times. The food is decent, but not worth the price(unless you hit up the two-for-one early dinner special). Steaks are usually pretty good, though some other items can be hit or miss. My biggest«beef» is really how the owner acts. He’s clearly been around for many decades. I can respect that and don’t begrudge the 1960s/1970s décor for that reason. That being said, he’s a tyrant. I’ve seen him downright belittle and yell at his waitstaff right in the middle of the eating hall, in front of all the customers. He’s a bully and it’s his way or the highway. To a degree, it’s fine to have your standards, but the things he was yelling at them about were trivial at best, completely ridiculous at worst. Even if they were things that should be corrected(and I honestly don’t think one thing he yelled about was even true) he has no right to talk to another person like that, much less in front of everybody else. I’ve been there when he’s happy and he seemed a little drunk, to be honest(at first I had forgotten it was the owner and was thinking«somebody needs to stop serving this guy» until he walked behind the counter and thanked us for coming). I’ve known a few people who worked for him and told me some pretty crazy stories about making employees cry, bullying them, not paying their checks, etc. but I kept an open mind thinking lots of employees just hate their jobs until I saw his behavior first hand. I can’t support a business like that, so I won’t be eating there until he retires. I wish he would clean up his attitude and see that he has a great thing going — not many steak places in Sonora — if he’d just be nice and treat his employees like people, not dogs. For the record, I’ve always had great service there, so I don’t think the staff is so bad that there should be any reason to be that hard on them.

This is a pretty good spot to eat my only complaint is I smell smoking in the kitchen area or bar area when I’m eating. The service is always good but nothing too special. I noticed this place stays rather busy so it seems to be a pretty popular spot

It’s so good! The food is great. The staff is always on top of things and work very hard! The room is small and noisy so ask for a booth, it helps! They serve fondue with freshly baked bread with dinner, it’s great!

Not sure what the negative comments were about regarding the service. We visited on a busy Saturday evening, and our server, Lori(Laurie?), was prompt with taking our order, refilling our drinks and bread basket, and checking in on us. The portions are large and the food is good! No complaints. We’ve been to Gus’s a couple of times and have had consistent service and quality on each occasion.

Amazing steakhouse! We were in Sonora over Valentine’s Day and wanted to eat at a great steakhouse, we found it at Gus’ Steakhouse! Since it was Valentine’s Day we did have to wait a bit(they don’t do reservations, 1st come 1st serve) it was SOOO worth the wait! They had Valentine’s Day deals, we went with the Steak and Lobster for two. The lobster tails were HUGE, accompanied with a huge steak. All cooked perfectly! Before this came out we started with salads and the BEST sourdough bread I’ve had in a long time. They bring the bread out fresh and hot! With fondue for dipping or butter if you prefer the old fashioned way! Everything was delicious and we left stuffed full! Definitely will be coming back next time we are in town!

Went to gus’s yesterday with my girlfriend. It was AMAZING i left absolutely full and satisfied. My server was super friendly and the food was even better ! I got the tri tip steak with salad pasta and veggies. I ate the hole plate and had to get desert. Overall great experience will definitely be back. Gus does need a bigger better location though or to renovate.

I’m not a native to Sonora; I was just visiting a good friend and we went out to dinner here to celebrate a birthday. They sincerely overcharge for their food. Pre-dinner salad consisted of a handful of the premade salad mixes you can buy at the grocery store. Ya know, the ones with the shaved carrots and pieces of red cabbage? Throw that on the plate half-assed and you’ve got your salad. I asked for the red wine vinaigrette and got a container of red wine vinegar and a container of olive oil. Yeah. I had to «make» my own. I had steak and what were supposed to be stuffed shrimp. I ordered medium rare, I got medium well, and the shrimp were awful. I don’t even know what was in them, but I do know there was a solid quarter inch of batter surrounding them in all of their deep-fried glory. The explanation on the menu did a poor job of actually telling you what you were getting. I paid $ 25(just for the entrée) for food I basically gave away to anyone else willing to eat it. A friend got a margarita. I tried it. Either I have a heavy pour, or someone forgot to actually add booze. The complimentary bread and cheese fondue was actually good. Just go there and eat that. Nothing else appears to be worth the money. Also, the owner of the joint didn’t actually help out his waitstaff, but he sure did like barking orders at them incessantly. Way to cater to good ambiance, buddy. Their wine menu made me want to weep. I’m sorry, but if Sutter Home made it anywhere on your wine list, it’s time to rethink your life choices as a restaurant owner. Go somewhere else, guys. You can do better.
