I’ve been looking for locally owned breakfast places in South Bend that are reasonably priced. Jan Marie’s Portage Ave Café popped up on my Google search this weekend, and I wanted to give it a try. My first impression was that the place had an old diner feel to it, which is not a negative in my book! The staff was very welcoming and friendly, and the menu had plenty of options. I ordered their homemade corned beef hash(I got the last order of it; I think they had made it the day before and nearly ran out!), with eggs, a pancake, and the fruit cup. The hash was great, and the fruit cup had the freshest looking fruit I’ve seen from a diner! My friend ordered the breakfast burrito topped with sausage gravy. I had a few bites of that, and while I liked my food more, his was good as well. It looked like their daily specials included coffee, a refreshing inclusion, as most places charge you extra for that! And the prices are the most competitive I’ve seen; my friend and I had our fill for around $ 7/plate. If you’re looking for a well-priced, locally owned breakfast stop, this would be one of my best suggestions.

This restaurant is one of my favorites for breakfast. I usually get one of the breakfast«specials», and drink the coffee that is included with it. The coffee is good, the service is good, the entire staff are very friendly and efficient, the prices are outstanding, and the food is very good. I would recommend this place to anyone for breakfast. If possible, I would rate this place as a 4 ½.

My Grandfather used to own this restaurant back in the day when it was called the J & A Grill, so I have fond memories of this place. It is under new ownership now and I am disappointed to report that it just isn’t the same. My Grandfathers artwork used to blanket the walls only to be replaced by corny prints of dogs. The food hasn’t changed much – which is good. I can still go to the bar and order my «reegoolar» half-pounder with fries and a chocolate shake.
