Bistro 1888

Okay… so my colleague and I were referred to this place while we were in town visiting so we went and I’m so glad we did. All week I was craving various food items such as shrimp, crabcake, and salmon. Typically when I see these items on the menu I get a little confused as to what I want if my tastebuds aren’t going a specific direction. Well, when I saw this menu had a dish that included all three of these items I went bonkers! And… when the plate came it and I saw it was just the right portion I probably could’ve gotten in formation. BUT when I tasted these bad boys sitting on my plate waiting to be sopped up like a biscuit and gravy… I about broke out into a holy dance. DEEEEELIIIISHHHHALLLLELLLUUUAH… it was really that good. I will probably schedule a weekend road trip to go down there, explore the town a little and dine there just because I enjoyed it so. Anyway… due to this dish alone I must say this was an «as good as it gets» experience for me! You be your own judge. I’m just judging my taste buds.

After 12 years, the Bistro is still the best in Southside and beyond :) They have a large menu with over 20 entrees and specials too.
Sometimes it’s fun to go in for apps and drinks with friends (the Yellowfin Tuna app is great) and other times a romantic dinner is the ticket. French Onion Soup and the Duck a L’Orange are offered this time of the year and definitely worth ordering.
They are a block away from the Prizery, a performing arts center that makes for a fun evening out after dinner.

A delightful treat. Awesomely great food. Attentive service. Good value too. I’m definitely coming back.

Came here with some co-​workers for a nice meal and that is exactly what we got. I ordered the crab cake and scallops and they were quite delicious. The beans seemed pretty basic and although the flavor of the potatoes was good, it could have been warmer as they seemed to be room temp. My co-​workers ordered steak and they both they were amazing… with one saying they are going to be quite now and pretty much didn’t say a word the entire rest of the meal :). I would highly suggest people come here and try it out.

We had dinner here Saturday night. We just couldn’t believe it. Everything was perfect. Some may consider it a little expensive but this is fine dining. We will definately return.

A gem hidden in this small town. Excellent food choices and I absolutely love the ambiance this charming restaurant has. You should make reservations if you want to dine at the Bistro because if not it is generally a long wait. Everyone in the area should take advantage of this jewel at least sometime during the year. I enjoy a glass of wine with whatever I have tried here and the food has always been impeccably prepared.

Had such a great time here with friends. The service was wonderful from when we walked in until we left. The food was delicious. I had a chicken pasta and fell in love; the calamari was amazing! I will definitely be back soon!

Wonderfully crafted menu items are worth getting off Highway 360 and taking the short ride downtown. The fresh asparagus soup was so good you want to order a second bowl. The shrimp and grits were delightful too. We travel this way a couple of times each season and will definitely be stopping in again.

Excellent. The setting is somewhat formal, but it wasn’t overly so. That being said, I didn’t feel comfortable opening my laptop while eating. Anyway, it’s very nice and there is a small bar area. The steak was very good. There was slightly too much sauce on the filet, but still very good. A plain well-​cooked steak can stand on its own. Good vegetables, too, BTW.

The food was excellent from appetizer through main course. For whatever reason the main course was delayed an extraordinary period of time. If fault lay with the kitchen or server I can’t decide. But the quality of the food made the experience. I would certainly return.

I have been to every state except Alaska and Hawaii and I have ate at some amazing restaurants across the nation. Bistro 1888 stands out as one of the great dining experiences I have had over the years. The food was absolutely fantastic. The server was top notch. It was a wonderful experience. I hope to be in South Boston VA again sometime so I can go back.

Good food. Good service. Great staff. I use to live in the area and visit this establishment frequently. I’ve never been disappointed in anything I’ve eaten here.

A truly amazing dining experience. The four of us ate here for a pre-​Christmas Eve dinner, and everyone loved it. The seafood dishes were absolutely fresh, impeccably prepared, and quite delicious. We also stayed for dessert, and the crème brûlée was the star of the whole dinner. If you are in South Boston, this is a must-​visit place.

Locals in the area could really only recommend two restaurants for us to choose from, given our criteria that we were looking for a great local restaurant. We tried both.
The upscale but casual atmosphere is very inviting. A perfect choice to grab a table with friends and have some great conversation.
I would recommend expanding the wine list, but the food choices were wonderful. We rarely get dessert but in this case we made an exception. I’ll make a return stop next time I’m in the area.

There is a wide chose of food and wine. Location is little but very nice. It’s perfect for all type of requests!
Dessert are homemade and naturally awesome. Waitress was polite and friendly! You have to try it!!!

Given the name I was expecting gas lamps and a stuffy atmosphere, but «1888» simply refers to the date at the top of the building. Inside is a modern space filled with light and colorful modern art.
The dinner menu has something for every taste, and there is also a «lighter fare» menu available. The service is friendly and efficient.
As for pricing, I don’t think the prices are unreasonable, but I do think it’s more of a splurge dining experience. I also think it would be helpful to customers if the cocktails and dessert menus had prices listed.

Great food. Great service. Prices are a little steep but average for this atmosphere and cuisine. Highly highly recommend the lamb. Only place in south boston I know that serves a perfect lamb chop
