I first tried Common Roots at a tasting at 9 Miles East Farm(relevance below) and was very impressed. Today I finally made it to the brewery. The Daylight DIPA(ABV8%) is superb. It’s got the piney notes I like in an IPA but also a lot of malty body. Also enjoyed the Burley Monk Belgian which is not overly sweet even though it’s made with honey, and the Haus Sauer #5 which manages to get to 5.8% ABV without killing the bretts. All in all, some tasty and sure handed brews. The tasting room is right off Route 9 and a pleasant place to spend some time. If you can, arrange your visit for Wednesday evening around 5:45 when you can have a 9 Miles East Pizza delivered to enjoy with your beer.(Must order in advance; there’s info on the 9 Miles East website [look them up on Unilocal] on how to do this.) I paid $ 18 for my Daylight DIPA growler in my own jug – a wee bit pricey, but ok for an exceptional brew.

Common Roots Brewing Company is a solid place to enjoy a beer in the North Country, but this is not yet a true beer drinker’s destination. I sampled a few different beers, specifically the Dark Ale, Burly Monk BPA, and the Last Light IPA. All of the beers were good, but the Dark Ale was the winner for me. I hesitate to give this location four-stars, as I didn’t think that any of the beers that I sampled brought anything new to the table. They tasted as I expected them to taste, with no real surprises or factors that differentiate their selection from the others in the area. Make no mistake, I enjoyed what I tasted, but I’m forever in pursuit of that X-factor when it comes to beer. The space here is excellent, with lots of room and plenty of seating. When we visited, Common Roots was doing a fundraiser for a local animal shelter. That type of charity is a great thing to see and a definite endorsement of the character of the operation. Overall, Common Roots has some very good things going. Their sizable selection of beers, along with a great drinking space signals that big things could be on the horizon for these folks. However, having been to multiple area breweries over the years, I’m looking for something more. I have high hopes that Common Roots will continue evolving and become one of the premier breweries in the area. I look forward to updating this review and adding an extra star or two.

So what’s in(South) Glens Falls you ask? Well, a lot of real estate… and common roots brewing! We’d never been to the area but were passing through and decided to check this spot out. On our way in we passed a lot of questionably open storefronts so we started to sweat it out a bit. However, when we reached our destination we realized it was worth it. The beer was excellent. It’s hard to beat $ 5 for a flight of 4 and with only 8 beers you can sample all of them for only $ 10! I sampled the 2 darks, the spinners and the session. I loved the dark ale and the coffee cup. Both had great smooth flavors without being too overpowering. The Spinners was a nice refreshing beer. The others available were a bit too hoppy for me but great according to those who prefer the hops. The staff was so friendly and welcoming that everyone at the bar seemed like a regular whether or not that was the case. The décor is just as laid back as their staff and they have an outdoor area where you can enjoy your flight or pour on Adirondack chairs. One drawback for me was the fact they don’t offer food. Can’t blame them, they’re a brewery but it’s nice they at least offer pretzels as a snack. They also will let you know you’re welcome to bring whatever food you’d like. Huge bonus: they offer delivery from 9 miles east farm pizza on Wednesdays! Although I haven’t tried it yet, 9 miles east has rave reviews. Sounds like a great option for those close enough to to visit on a weeknight!

My newest favorite exercise program is about to become Tap Toeing Thru the Adirondacks. With the help of the Adirondack Craft Beverage Trail and Map we’ve located another brewery tap room. They tell me it used to be a garage door company, but I don’t think you would know that from looking at the building. They have built a really nice tasting room with a bar and some high-top tables. There are a couple of TVs and some big windows through which you can watch the brewing process. They don’t offer any food other than a humongous jar of pretzels. I didn’t ask if you could bring in your own food in or have something delivered like one other taproom we’ve been to. But they do offer a wide variety of brews. They sell a flight of four 4 oz. pours for $ 5. Since there were a total of six brews available when we arrived(two had kicked the night before) we asked to sample all six. The additional charge was only $ 2. It looked like most everyone else there at the time were drinking 16 oz. pints. They also sell/refill growlers. The six that we tried were: Haus Sour #4 — 5.8% ABV. Dark Ale –7.2% ABV Belgian Style Honey Ale — 9% ABV Burly Monk BPA — 6% ABV Mosaic Session Pale Ale — 5% ABV Bright Light DIPA — 8%ABV While all were good, my wife favored the double IPA Bright Light while I leaned toward the Dark Ale. We both are looking forward to returning, me to try the Coffee Cup stout at 9% ABV and my wife to try the Last Light IPA at 6.8% ABV. Service was friendly and informative from the bartender if you asked any questions about the beer. The only negative we found was the need to hold one’s breath when using the unisex restroom. Hopefully, this was a temporary problem that will be rectified by the time we return. Note: The police department is located behind the brewery. Drink and drive accordingly!!!

Got the chance to check out this brewery this weekend. Absolutely amazing. Here is the breakdown: Décor: Outside the parking needs to be worked out(not a lot of lighting), but it’s already on the owners radar so thats good. The inside is lovely, they have a large bar area and then some tables in the front for bigger groups. It’s modern, and very inviting. Service: There were two people bartending when I was there. One of them was a little quiet, but the other happened to be Christian brewer/co-owner of the place with his father. They were both friendly, and super attentive to everybody there. It was a crowd of about probably 20 people give or take and nobody had to wait for anything. The fact that the co-owner happens to be super cute didn’t hurt either. Beer: This is the best part. EVERY single one of the beers was fantastic. For 4 dollars you get a flight of about 4 oz pours of each beer. The beers that they had on tap when I went were: Belgian Style Honey Ale Belgian Style Pale Ale Dark Ale Session Pale Ale — at 5% it’s almost not a session ale. I’ll give them this one, but I think they could do better and make a beer that’s just as delicious and with even more sessionability. I rated them all about 4.5−5 on untaped. Although they didn’t win as my favorite session beer, they absolutely won for my favorite belgians. Although they have two belgians on tap, Chrisitan stated that his favorite beer is IPA which will be out in January, apparently there are some beers aging in bourbon which I cannot wait for. Will I be back? Lets see I love IPA’s and beers aged in bourbon, and the owner is cute. Yes. I’ll be back, and you all should go check it out.

I am posting this review not based on the actual beer as for i was never able to try it. After I parked what seemed like 5 minutes away I ventured into Common Roots anticipating getting a growler of there last light IPA. A friend of mine recommended this, and I was eager to try it. Anyways when I walked into the brewery I then understood why I had to park so far away, it was packed! So I waited at the bar for service, and after 10 minutes of waiting I was then finally spoken to by a very rude woman. I asked for a sample of the last light IPA as for I wanted to purchase a growler of it. I was then immediately informed that they are not doing growlers of last light IPA on this day! WHAT? this is brewery and you can’t fill a growler of it? It would have been a $ 20 purchase easy! So after being ignored and turned away this place has left a taste of stale beer in my mouth. I will never return! I will now take my business to the brewery up the street.
