We stopped here on our way back from Richmond. It was rainy weather, we were hungry and there wasn’t a lot around but trees and highway. The Hungry Farmer popped up on Unilocal with a good rating and I am so glad we decided to stop and try it. We were the only people eating at the restaurant and Scott and his brother treated us as if we had come over to their family house for dinner. I ordered Scott’s rib platter and my boyfriend ordered the chicken and fries basket. The food came out fast. The rib meat literally fell off the bone and the BBQ sauce was just the right amount of sweet. The hand cut fries were seasoned well, the garlic bread was a good combination of crispy crust and soft center, and the coleslaw was some of the freshest and tastiest I’ve had. For $ 10, the rib platter is the way to go. My boyfriend’s chicken tenders had a great seasoning and he had a plentiful amount of fries($ 7.50). So much food! Scott told us to save room for dessert because they had just made some fresh pies. I had not saved room for dessert but I ate it anyway! :) I ordered the double chocolate meringue pie and the boyfriend got their signature coconut cream pie. Both were awesome! Good homemade flavor. I believe a crust can really make a pie and both of the crusts on these pies were perfect. Scott said people travel miles to come for these pies and I think I will now be added to that list. On top of the awesome food for really low prices, Scott and his brother were welcoming, friendly, and continuously checked to see if we needed anything at all to make our dinner more enjoyable. They are there from early in the morning(I really want to come back to try their breakfast) until 8 or 9pm and you can tell that Scott really cares about making sure the food is exactly what the customer is looking for. He says that he works hard to make good quality food while keeping the prices low. I would say he has definitely achieved that and we will absolutely be back. Thank you both for your hospitality on our pit stop during a rainy cold drive back home, it was much needed!

The waitress and owner very helpful with selection of food on menu. I had ribs with slaw and hand cut fries and wife had meatloaf plate, both had plenty on the plate and both very good. I will come back.

I’ll admit that we originally stopped at the Cracker Barrel as a lunch place in our way to visit family during Christmas break. But the wait, like just about every Cracker Barrel I’ve ever seen was just too long and we had places to go. So, based on your Unilocal reviews, we ended up at The Hungry Farmer. We’re glad we made the choice to buy local from a non-chain restaurant. A few minutes off of the highway, THF was completely empty when my two kids and wife showed up. By the middle of our lunch, there were at least five other families that came in. There was one waitress(a sign was posted for experienced help) and Scott, I guess the owner/chef was in the open kitchen. The food was really tasty and the combo platters were worth the value price. Daughter and wife had the BBQ pulled pork which came with hand cut fries(still with the skin!) and wife added the chopped sweet coleslaw which was placed on top of the BBQ on the round Kaiser roll. Son had a double plain burger also with fries. They up-charge for lettuce/tomato/onion(raw) and another for pickles. I think you should just raise the price and then have the customer tell you that you don’t want it instead of asking for toppings and being charged for them. I had the BBQ ribs special which came with six ribs, coleslaw, garlic bread, and fries. The sauce was right on but I don’t know if it was homemade or not. I did like it, though, and the ribs fell off the bone and very tender. We also had milkshakes and a root beer float. They were a little small for the price($ 4.50) but tasty. The bad value of the meal was the large onion rings for $ 7.50 which there was not a lot of rings for the money. My rib plate was only $ 10 and I think the pulled pork plates were $ 6.50. We all were very full after our lunch. One thing I did not like was with the open kitchen hearing a microwave(?) beeping rather often so I don’t know how much was just reheated. It could have been even better even though we were mostly pleased with our meal… especially the really good Q. We would return! $ 70 family of 4 including tax/tip. Those milkshakes and float and overpriced onion rings got the price up. If we went with water and combo value meals, we probably could have been just as happy for about $ 38. Continued good luck with the business! Buy local!

Delicious, made-from-scratch food in a friendly atmosphere! Traveling by on I-85, we picked out this spot because it had good reviews and was easy to get to from the interstate. Had brisket, pulled pork, fries, baked beans, nachos, and chocolate chip cookies. We loved every bite and want to stop here every time we drive I-85!

Stopping for a quick lunch while passing through South Hill became much more pleasurable by visiting The Hungry Farmer. Since the BBB Brisket was just coming out of the oven, I thought I’d try the lunch special for $ 9.75. I substituted the baked beans instead of fries. They were soft, sweet, and tasty. The Cole Slaw was finely chopped and on the sweet side, but an excellent accompaniment to the brisket. The BBQ Beef Brisket was very tender and sauced just right. A large portion of the very good brisket left me extremely satisfied as I washed it down with fresh ice tea. I recommend this little place highly.

If you drive by with out stopping in and trying some of their delicious food. You are doing your self a serious disservice. A+ thanks for the meal.

A small, very friendly Southern diner. Texas beef brisket was nicely done — just enough sweetness to balance a little heat. As mentioned elsewhere, the coconut crème pie tasted every bit the homemade that it is. Very convenient to I-85: pass by all of the chain fast food and try the Hungry Farmer for real food.

Delicious food and friendly folks. This place made me feel like home, down to the made-from-scratch lemon meringue pie. If you’re driving down 85, it’s definitely worth the detour!

Decided to go off the beaten path on my way to New Jersey. So I Unilocaled a place that was off of I 85 E. This got four stars and wasn’t too far off the exit so I thought I’d give it a try. It was worth the side trip. It was easy to find and I was able to park right out in front free of charge. I was the only one in here on a Friday morning so the service was great. I ordered the bacon egg and cheese sandwich with a side of home fries. I was expecting the sandwich to come on a biscuit but I didn’t specify that and it tasted just fine on toast. The menu prices are very reasonable and this is a place I would stop back by if I have the opportunity. According to the sign out front they are the best ribs and burgers in town so I might have to check that out next time … of course not for breakfast.

Food here’s pretty awesome, cheap. Home made pie is delicious. The chef/owner is friendly and changes up the specials every few weeks so you can either eat what you eat every time or spice it up.

Stopped by for breakfast and it was so good I had to come back for dinner. I got the crab cakes which were the special this weekend. Not only are their crab cakes phenomenal but the sauce that came with it is to die for. My date got the chicken tenders and he ended up dipping his chicken into the lemon dill sauce as well. Affordable, delicious and family run. Definitely going to be a repeat offender. Oh and the coconut crème pie. amazing!!!

Just ate here for breakfast and it was a joke. My «Denver omelette» was a ham and cheese omelette. A Denver includes onions and green peppers. The cheese was processed it tasted like kraft singles. My boyfriend ordered a «side of sausage» which included one shriveled patty. The pancakes tasted like box pancakes. And I have no idea why there was dried oregano all over my food for decoration. The coffee was AWFUL it tasted just like army coffee. «It tastes like muddy water and looks like turpentine.» So to make it worse the owner was giving his waitress an attitude saying we kept looking for her for the bill. Which may I add was untrue. And told her to make sure we knew to go up front and pay because she wasn’t supposed to bring us the bill. The waitress was obviously embarrassed because he yelled at her infront of customers. So she came over and I told her not to worry about that and not to let him ruin her day. Fuck this place. Four stars my ass.

So glad we stopped in this was well worth it! Can’t be in a hurry, just sit back and relax and enjoy the hometown hospitality. Clean, comfortable. Kids were welcomed. Food was delicious! The potato skins appetizer was the best. We also had burgers which were tender juicy and delicious. Fries were real fries and you could taste it! Will be back next time we are here on vacation.

We were looking for somewhere to eat for breakfast on our way to Home Depot. Finding The Hungry Farmer on Unilocal,we decided to give this place a try. We both had omelets with toast and breakfast potatoes. The food was great! The potatoes were some of the best I’ve ever had! In addition, the owner was a genuinely nice person. We enjoyed the conversation! Support your local businesses!

A good break from your average chain restaurant. We had the catfish and ribs and they are excellent and as the owner will tell you they are the best in town. You have to keep an eye out for the restaurant as you’ll drive right by it and not even know it was there.
