I am a VERY discerning mom when it comes to getting my 8-year-old son involved in activities. I am constantly weighing whether an activity will provide positive growth opportunities without unreasonably infringing on my family’s schedule, dinners together, playtime, downtime, etc. Every family so busy these days meeting the demands of school and extra-curriculars that it seems to inevitably lead to burnout, complaining, and resentment rather than enrichment. I am totally opposed to this. Darnell CKD is my solution. This martial arts school fits into any schedule. Classes are offered every night except Monday, at 5:15 or 6:15. You pay for a one-month membership and get to choose the time that works for you each week. There is a very clear-cut progression of achievement and students move through belts at a steady pace provided you stick with the program. My son achieves a new belt level every three months as long as he attends class once a week and lives up to the school’s other requirements. These other requirements are why I love Darnell CKD even more … they hinge upon him doing well in school, respecting his elders, and upholding the principles of «Humility, Honesty, Gentleness, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Unbreakable Spirit.» How cool is that? My son has thrived in this atmosphere of precision kicks, blocks and punches; games that foster coordination; and a clear-cut path of goal-setting. He has achieved several belts, represented Darnell CKD in community parades, and completed the rigorous requirements to join the Leadership cCub. He has the Demo Club to look forward to next. In my opinion, this school fulfills everything you would want from an extracurricular activity without making ludicrous demands on family time. The owner is very dedicated to creating a space for children of all ages to thrive and find community and strength in their achievements. A great place for families.
