Pomperaug Golf Club is sadly disappointing. It’s a flat layout with lots of water, easy walk and a few challenging holes although generally easy. Unfortunately since the course pro took over the management the greens keeping has been horrific. Many of the fairways have died in the last couple years and the greens are also a mess. They used to use the neighboring Heritage CC for their maintenance and went off on their own with disastrous results. In September they went weeks without mowing ! I lost balls in the fairway because the grass was so high. The course generally attracts a lot of seniors and women, and can be very very slow. Weekends can easily take 3+ hours for nine holes! and there are no rangers. Prices aren’t cheap — $ 25 – 27 for 9 holes walking. Although I live 4 minutes away, I’ll play elsewhere. Update 8⁄14 — the pro has hired a real greens keeper, course conditions much better than the last 2 years. Still not a destination location but at least playable for a quick nine holes.

A decent golf course and one of the many in the town Southbury. Pomperaug is a Par 35, 9-hole course that features 6 par-4’s, 2 par-3’s and 1 par-5. The course is relatively short with most of the par-4’s averaging 300 – 350 yards. The difficulty is average, as despite the relatively short overall length, the two par-3’s are around 175 yards, but close to 200 if you play the longer blue tees. Water comes into play on almost every hole, whether it be a brook off to the side of the fairway or a pond to stay clear of. The course condition was only fair. While the greens were in relatively good condition, many of the fairways were in poor shape. The course needs a bit of work. Not to mention that there’s seems to be a Canada Goose infestation, so use your imagination to figure out what that means. Affordability is also fair. It was $ 27 for 9 holes walking on a Saturday, which is okay at face value, but given the course condition, I’d say it’s slightly over-priced here. If you’re looking for a course that’s local and plays pretty quick, come here. I played with a friend and we finished in just under 2 hours on a Saturday afternoon in August, so that’s not bad. Just keep in mind that the course is only in mediocre playing condition. P.S. The course is tricky to find. There were no signs for it on the main road. You had to pull into a seemingly random plaza and drive around for a bit before uncovering it.
