Based on the review if other users I decided to try the Gateway Deli. Boy was i surprised to find out that it is no more. New management and new concept. It is now ‘Madea’s Café’. A diner menu with a soul food flare. It appears to have some of the more popular items from the Gateway Deli. Huge portions, friendly service. Over all it seem like a good neighborhood restaurant. It just opened and has not developed a steady clientele. I will be coming back. I hope it makes

What a hidden gem, the portions are ridiculously huge. Stopped on for a lunch and needed someone to roll me outta there! Had the brisket sandwich on a potato pancake, yup on a potato pancake. Words won’t do this justice. The brisket was like butter, and not frozen butter either it was like butter at your grandmas that’s been sitting on the counter forever. I was full after half but felt guilty leaving it on my plate so finished it up. Service was awesome, even the staff that was not our server stopped by to make sure things were ok. And I guess when you put food out like that you never have fear of asking how things are… Well done!

More than impressed by the portions given. The food is delicious. I had the corned beef on rye and I loved it. There was so much. I was able to share just the one sandwich.

Good service and a great Reuben sandwich. I am in town for work and it was close to my hotel. I would recommend.

This is really an overall review of all Gateways as we had them at the Lions game. There was a large group of us from Nebraska who went to support Suh! About mid way through the 2nd quarter, Gateway Deli approached us with free nachos! Gotta love business that support the Huskers.

I would say that in menu-size and many other aspects — the Gateway Deli is pretty comparable to Bread Basket. It is a Jewish deli with a smattering of Polish sounding menu items. Sandwiches are the star of the menu — but they also offer entrees, salads and breakfast. The sandwiches are the type that I have a hard time figuring out how to shove them in my mouth– I got the Joey’s Neon today, turkey, coleslaw and Russian dressing, but I added Swiss and had them grill my bread. Quite yummy. When you sit down, you get your own personal bowl of two pickle spears and a glob of coleslaw. It’s pretty hilarious looking — but since the wait for the food to come out of the kitchen can occasionally be a bit much, the pickles and coleslaw are welcome additions to the table. Lunch companion #3 was mostly amused by the people watching at Gateway– and he was right, these folks are hilarious without trying to be. And if that’s not your thing– you could always gaze at the poster of Rhett Butler or James Dean on the walls. Dont’ forget to put a quarter in the candy dispenser on your way out the door for some Kosher candy. :)

This is by far the CLEANEST deli/diner I’ve been to in Metro Detroit. It’s probably Jewish owned since they have Latkes and Matzoh Ball soup on the menu and a picture of Ann Frank in the back. Anyways, I went there on a workday for lunch so I was trying to get in and out in an hour, which was hard to do since their menu has soooo many choices… from pasta, soups, salads, sandwiches/burgers, they even have veal and calves liver! They also have a decent Breakfast selection too. The initial service was fast, the waitress seated my friend and I promptly and took our orders right away. Even our soups came out quickly… but then there was a lot of waiting… about 30 minutes of waiting. When we asked the waitress why our food was taking so long, she gave us a little attitude saying«I’ll bring it when it’s ready» and rolled her eyes at us! That I was not happy about… but then she carried on to say that it takes longer because everything is made to order, and soon after talking to her, our food was ready… and the helpings were plentiful to say the least! I didn’t mind the little attitude from the waitress since our food was super fresh. I ordered a BBQ Chicken Sandwich w/fries(which didn’t taste too BBQ but it was really good nonetheless) and my friend ordered a Reuben which was piled high w/corned beef and some sauerkraut — no cheese since it’s Jewish. It was too much meat in the Reuben for my liking in fact but for you real meatlovers out there, I’m sure you would appreciate the portions. All in all, this place is a good spot to grab some fresh breakfast/brunch/lunch, and it’s maintained really well!

Great Dinty Moore Sandwich! Portions are huge for the price. Have to visit every time I go to Detroit.
