I do think the fish is the best I have had so far in Spokane, but that is not saying much. Food: Was expecting great-to-awesome and got good-to-great. I said that I like simple sushi and after recommending the mixed sashimi special and me nodding enthusiastically, the server came back and essentially upsold me on another combo dish that included 3 types of nigiri(delish) and a Tiger Roll which sounded good but I watched Charlie drench it in eel sauce and ALL I could taste was soy sauce and sugar. Very sad. I should have just gotten different nigiris. The tiger roll normally sells for 15 $ but instead it basically ruined my meal. In general the prices here are 15−20% more than what I am used to for good sushi. Service: Very friendly but otherwise missing some key points: The tea had no flavor… even after 10 minutes of ‘steeping,’ which is way too long for tea to steep, anyway. I had to ask for a glass of white wine and it tasted a bit old. She brought me the check without asking if I wanted anything else, which I would have. It was only 8:00 on a thursday and she was getting ready to clock out. Ambiance: Charming, not fancy, but nicer than most Asian restaurants in Spokane. I will be going back.

Been to this restaurant several times and the food is amazing, atmosphere is quiet and personal, and the fish tanks with the new born fish are relaxing to watch while Charlie creates his masterpiece sushi. Charlie is awesome as well… very funny. We will certainly visit again.

There is another Unilocal account for this place under«Sushi Yama»(with more reviews) which details why I am giving this a 1 star. In so many words don’t come here! I generally over-rate places, but this place has the WORSTSERVICEEVER. I felt like i was living in a nightmare. Gordon Ramsey needs to come to this place because it is indeed a KITCHENNIGHTMARE!

I had the craving for sushi while visiting Spokane and proceeded to lower my expectations towards what I would find being a snobby west-sider. Sushiyama was as good as you’ll find anywhere. The selection was fantastic, and my «Omakase(chef’s choice) Sashimi Test» was passed with flying colors. Super fresh, unusual varieties and all delicious. I can’t imagine a better sushi option in the Inland Empire. Bonus points for having me try their home-made kim chi that was out of this world.

I am guessing the owner was having a really bad day? I came in with my 2 and 9 year old a bit before noon on a Saturday to order to-go. The place was empty. He said he wasn’t quite ready, we said no rush, and he took our order and we waited. Another couple came in and he served them first. That was weird but didn’t say anything. 30 minutes and my 2 year was getting restless and hanging out in an empty booth(the entire place was empty except for the one couple). He basically angrily yelled at me about my toddler playing with 2 paper napkins(and how it messed up his table which had been oh so painstakingly set with a few napkins and disposable chopsticks). 2 paper napkins. Not screaming or crying, she was in a booth playing with 2 paper napkins. For a customer waiting 30 minutes for a $ 53 order with the place basically empty? Now I get that my 2 year old can be annoying, but if you care about your customers, how about offering a cup of water, or a simple snack, or a kid friendly utensil or cup? He angrily suggested that he refund my money, which I readily accepted. An employee was coming in just as we left that he looked relieved to see who apologized for being late, so maybe he had no one in the kitchen and he could only do sushi? If so, why not say so? I was more confused than annoyed(although I was certainly annoyed). And if my guesses are correct, why not offer a smile and admit the situation and offer alternatives? When is it ever the right thing to yell at the customer and his kids? It just didn’t make any sense. I’m hoping there wasn’t some family crisis, that might explain the behavior.

Stunningly good sushi and authentic Japanese and Korean food. Charlie, the owner, is a magnificent host and is a phenomenal sushi chef. The food is amazing, prepared with care and with fish fresh from Seattle. The food is reasonably priced given the quality of what you get, and the quality is top rate. When my wife and I want good Japanese and Korean food in Spokane, this is where we go.

By far the best sushi in Spokane. Charlie, the owner is quite the character and so passionate about his trade. You just don’t usually see such high quality sushi in Spokane. You will not be disappointed.

Went with a friend and sat at the bar. Charlie is ever so talkative and convinces us to have his special. OK — I’m game. I’m always up for trying something new. He blathers on endlessly amusing himself, we have a Cass beer and he serves up a variety of oysters and sushi. It was fine — nothing to write home about. However, the bill arrives and to my complete and total surprise — $ 107!!! Are you freakin’ kidding me? I just ate $ 100 worth of sushi? I guess I should have asked how much the special was but on the outside I couldn’t imagine it being more than maybe $ 25 per person. A complete and total rip. I won’t be back obviously and will definitely warn my friends about this unbelievable scam Mr. Charlie has going on. Sushi I at 44th& Regal — make the drive. Much better at about 25% the price. Bye bye Charlie.

I’ve been to their Airway Heights branch. I’m disappointed. Having lived in Japan for five years and toured Korea, i am not impressed with this restaurant. $ 5 for 2 pcs. of sushi is too much. I also had $ 11.59 Unagi Donburi(rice bowl topped with fresh grilled eel) is one of the most disappointing meal I’ve ever had. The meal consisted of 5 small slices of eel to which i feel is way overpriced.

Did this place move from its location in Airway Heights? If so, I feel bad for the AFB members who frequented on a regular basis. It was the best kept secret in Spokane. Charlie ships in the freshest fish from Seattle every day, and he is so personable. Always chats us up when we come in, always in a great mood with amazing fish. Has Korean dishes too, like BiBimBop(the salmon is excellent and enough for two). The sushi is equal to Tokyo Bowl in Houston, my standard. Give this place a try.

Knowledgable owners and servers. Unbelievably fresh and delicious fish. Reasonably priced. I’ve eaten expense account sushi the world over. This was some of the best at a fraction of the price. A true gem in Spokane.

Delicious food! I tried the oysters with a rice wine mignonette and they were some of the best oysters I have had in my life. I would recommend Sushiyama over any other local sushi place.

Best sushi in Spokane. I have lived around NYC and San Francisco. Charlie the sushi chef is knowledgeable and serious about his art. Go on Thursday when he comes back from Seattle with fresh fish and you will NOT find better sushi for 300 miles.
