Brian has maintained my small legion of lawn equipment for years. His rates are reasonable, and gets the work done right the first time & quickly. Now I have a new addition to my stable of loud outdoor toys(Toro Snowblower) he will also be the one I turn to for annual maintenance and end of season service. If you follow his advice on maintaining your equipment properly they will last for years. My current lawnmower I have had near 10 years, and will likely get many more years out of it just with his care and attention. His pricing for equipment is competitive and always come with real down home good customer service. Come to buy, come to repair– Brian’s is the place.

My experience going to Brian’s Lawnmower today was surreal, as if I had walked through a portal to another world where mom and pop shops regularly slay the big box retail warehouses and mammoth Internet superstores. Unfortunately, in the real world, the opposite is all too often true. Mom and pop shops are virtually extinct nowadays, and yet most consumers think this is a good thing — what with low, low prices and no need to rise from the couch to make a purchase. And truth be told, it is a good thing for many. I buy a ton of stuff off the Internet, and at Lowes, and Home Depot, and even Target from time to time. Today, I would buck that trend and be rewarded for doing so. 12+ inches of snow fell yesterday. I still have no snowblower. What I do have is a bad case of tennis elbow, so this time doing the shoveling myself was out of the question. No, I don’t want to pay some pimply-faced teenagers $ 80 to shovel my driveway. And I’m tired of being«that guy» — you know, the pitiful guy the neighbor across the street with the snowblower sees shoveling snow and offers to lend you his snowblower so he doesn’t have to watch you have a heart attack in your own driveway. Yeah, I’ve been that guy for the last two winters. Well, no more. Unfortunately, I didn’t prepare in advance, because I never prepare for anything in advance. I only act at the precise moment a crisis strikes, and usually by then it is to late to remedy the situation with any advanced means. But today I got lucky. Even though I have a personal mantra to «never buy an umbrella when it’s raining,» I really needed to get the driveway and sidewalks plowed. It was time to buy a snowblower. As I placing my order for store pickup at Lowe’s I recalled hearing about this little mom and pop shop in Spotswood that sells snowblowers, lawn mowers, and other large outdoor power tools. I asked around and everyone had good things to say about Brian’s Lawnmower. Being a bargain shopper, I was worried about getting jacked on price from a small shop like this, but I figured I’d give it a try. On my first pass, I blew right past the entrance. How could I not? All I could see driving down Manalapan Road were rows of residential houses. Then I realized one of them had a little sign pointing down a driveway. I turned down the driveway, and sure enough there it was — a large, non-descript hangar-like structure and sign indicating that I was in the right place. I would now enter into that other world I mentioned above. I walk in and there are lots of snowblowers in the shop. They only carry Snapper and Toro. This lack of a broader selection strangely soothes me, as I realize they have likely already done the curation I would normally have to do. I then have a conversation with a nice woman who asks me a few questions about my needs, and voila! I am at the counter purchasing a new Snapper Snowblower. More importantly, I feel good about my purchase. Everyone I spoke to knows every detail about every product in the store. They’ve been in business for over 30 years. And here’s the kicker — they offer to deliver it to my house, several miles away, within one hour, fully assembled, with gas and oil, and show me how to use it when they get there. They even registered it for me. Where the hell else can you get that kind of service? The only worry I had when they left was whether I overpaid for it. I did not have time to do comparison shopping online once I zeroed in on the Snapper. So I looked it up online and was shocked at what I saw: the same exact snowblower, for over $ 200 more on Amazon. Now I really feel good about my purchase. So the next time you need to make a big purchase where you might actually sleep better knowing there’s someone to call or go to when you have a question or an issue, think of your local mom and pop shop. And most certainly if you need a snowblower and you’re in the Central Jersey area, ditch Lowes and go to Brian’s. I am a big fan.
