I have had the Healthy Heaven a few times and love it! The variety of vegetables is great. I also enjoy their boneless spare ribs! Coming from NY it’s usually hard to find a yummy spot, this one is a keeper in my book! Can’t wait to try more things on the menu. Thank you!

Not the same since new owners took over– food doesn’t have the same taste and ordered a beef dish and chicken which were apparently cooked in the same pan Bc they shared similar tastes. Found a hair in my food also– called requesting the owner call me back and never did– time for a new Chinese place! Attempted to order for 30 minutes via phone last night which must have been taken off the hook– requested a call back 2 months ago from the owner to discuss the hair in my food and issue with two dishes but didn’t happen Apparently new owner #3– ordered again tonight and food had no flavor– called and was told new owner took over 1.5 months ago certainly last time getting food here– sad Bc the original owners who moved to TX ran an amazing place!

This is my favorite Chinese place. Love their general tso chicken. Delicious. Homemade duck sauce is good. Traditional egg rolls are also really good. Very friendly staff and restaurant is very clean inside.

I have been going to the Tung Hsing house since I was about 3 years old: old enough to safely eat out with my parents. So maybe my opinions are a bit skewed with nostalgia, but every Chinese dish I eat is always compared to this restaurant in my head. Their food is Americanized Chinese, which means that it’s not crazy adventurous… But the food is consistently well cooked, and if you’re looking for a little adventure, check out the specials. That being said, they are very accommodating. The waitstaff will always accommodate food allergies and preferences if you ask, and are quick with the refills. Their noodles completely ruined me for all other Chinese noodles. If you have a sensitive stomach, you might want to try their chicken with angel hair.

Not impressed. I ordered take out because of the reviews on Unilocal.Seriously guys, 4 and 5 stars??? Greasy. American chinese. Almost as bad as saying Olive Garden is authentic italian.

Don’t visit THH if you want authentic Chinese food, but as far as overly greasy Americanized Chinese food is concerned, they do a good job. We get takeout from them on a regular basis, usually go for roast pork, eggplant with chicken, and Mongolian beef.

I came here a lot for takeout, and the service was typical of Chinese establishments — efficient and no frills with taking your order and payment, and then you wait. Never had anyone outright rude, so that’s good . Simple American Chinese food – Fried rice was good — had more of a soy sauce/dark base, compared to what I’m used to some locations in Chinatown or BK Chicken chow fun — good dish, with perfect amount of sauce, and I think there were peppers and onions in there, if I recall(?) and I really enjoyed it. The portions weren’t that large for what you were getting, but still delicious, and that’s what counts!

The new owners have made a number of small but significant changes to the quality of their ingredients ranging from simple things like the quality of the noodles served with every meal to meaty ribs done perfectly. Even the packaged take-out mustard is now a quality product. Service both at the table or for take-out is friendly and efficient. The prices might have increased a tad, but given the generous portions eating here is still a relative bargain.

Four stars may seem a little high for what is essentially your classic Americanized Chinese fare. But, what can I tell you? I’m a fan! Unlike the long tail of awful Chinese joints across New Jersey, the Tung Hsing House consistently cranks out decent, if completely generic, Chinese fare. Set your expectations accordingly, and you won’t be disappointed, especially if you have a hankering for the kind of Chinese food you might have experienced as a child of the 70s. In that regard, Tung Hsing House is a portal to another time;(for me) a time when my parents would take my little brother and I on the bus as kids for a trip into the City. Up and down dirty, dingy Canal Street we’d traverse; my mother dragging us in and out of creepy pushcart malls to shop for cheap goods; my father popping in and out of the closest OTB to put a bet down on a race. Eventually we’d make our way over to Mott Street, down to it’s dirtiest, narrowest corner, to a non-descript building where we’d ascend up a long, steep staircase into Kao Wah Restaurant. Inside was a large room full of round tables, filled to the brim with both local Chinese folk and goofy tourists like us; everyone gorging themselves on Peking Duck, Egg Foo Young, Chop Suey, and other types of classics that have since disappeared in favor of today’s more uppity«Asian fusion» menus. My brother and I didn’t particularly like these trips any more than we liked Chinese food, save for the paper Polynesian umbrella we’d get in our Cokes, and of course, the super greasy fried noodles that would come to the table when you would first sit down. But this was our family tradition, and my memories of it are still fond to this day. And that’s why I have a special place in my heart for the Tung Hsing House. The Tung Hsing House, in many ways, brings me back to the days of dining in Kao Wah in the early 80s. The noodles are exactly the same. The tea comes in that same flimsy, metal pot; served in those same handle-less cups that you can never pick up because the tea is so damn hot. Duck sauce, mustard, egg rolls, wanton soup, and dumplings are all made precisely to the specification that made Americanized Chinese food so popular in the 70s and 80s. Classic dishes like Moo Shu Pork, General Tso’s Chicken, and Shredded Beef in Garlic Sauce are all exactly as I remember them as a kid. Don’t expect anything fancy or out of the ordinary. Don’t expect to be blown away by anything groundbreaking or standout. Don’t expect to not have to make a B-line for the toilet an hour later. You know what to expect when you come here. The only thing that might surprise you is how good the ordinary can be when it is perfectly executed in the hands of a capable chef. That’s what’s going on here at the Tung Hsing House. This place has been an anchor in East Brunswick for as long as I can remember, and I first moved here in 1978. Maybe that’s why they’ve been able to keep the wormhole to 1970’s Chinatown open for so long. Whatever the case, they’re obviously doing something right. The owners and servers are all very friendly and seem to have strong bonds with their customers. And the customers always seem to leave with a smile on their face. And in my opinion, that’s worthy of a 4-star rating.

When the Spotswood shoprite gets too hectic and you develop a hunger, just a short walk within the parking lot to this highly Americanized Chinese restaurant will satisfy your tummy, but not your taste buds as much. One thing that should glare at you is the lack of Elite reviews. Many Unilocalers that reviewed this place haven’t logged many reviews, period. This is usually a red flag, telling me there’s nothing compelling to write about or a few homers looking to hook the family owned place up. Having dined here several times throughout the years, usually due to the starving scenario from grocery shopping I can honestly say this place is more American Chinese than what one would consider Authentic. All your standard dishes from Happy family, shrimp w/lobster sauce which is my go to in a pinch, roast pork low mein along with egg rolls. Don’t expect traditional Chinese vegetables like bok choy, gailan, lotus or any deviations of fungi. The only dumpling are the plain old pork without any dim sum offerings. No noodle options. Standard soup. Black tea bags. They do have duck, quack. All priced average for an ample supply. So if you can read into my perspective as a true lover of everything Asian from my countless reviews, you’ll understand my less than stellar description. Please don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying anything is poorly prepared or gross, in fact the food is OK for what it is. Typical american Chinese food that you’d expect from a mall that most American’s frequent. You can’t blame them for carving out a niche catering to local clientele. Spotswood just isn’t an Asian mecca for fine dining, lol. The interior is clean and service is always attentive and a BYOB bonus. There are far greater options just a short ride into East Brunswick or go for gold and head to Edison the CNJ Asian capital of all things truly Authentic. If you want your moo goo gai pan and chicken with broccoli(not Chinese broccoli) this’ll hit the spot at a generous 3 rating. But, if you have a discerning palate for something a lil more authentic like me, then this isn’t a destination rather a quick fix in need of sustenance.

Prompt and courteous service, average food. Tried the Hot and sour soup, Egg fried rice and sliced shrimp in pepper sauce. Nothing was oily or salty like at many other chinese restaurants, and also not spicy. However, can’t say anything really got my attention except the sheer number of peanuts in my entrée! I’m not allergic but don’t enjoy crunching on peanuts in my food. A little surprised that they didn’t ask about allergies since the menu didn’t say this dish contained the common allergen. Tung Hsing House looks like a modest family run restaurant, and I liked some of the hand sketched cartoons/caricatures on the walls, though rest of the décor is very cliched. Bottomline: Might do takeout or drop by when convenience takes precedence over taste.

Been a patron of this place since my childhood twenty or so years ago. I miss the old owners but I must admit the food pretty much tastes the same. Seems like people that don’t really like this place are mostly non-Chinese/Taiwanese. My family and I are Taiwanese and my Taiwanese/Chinese friends all like getting take-out from here – it is our default when too lazy or tired to cook. Added pics of the latest menu – up-to-date as of 1÷9÷2015.

Original creative Chinese cuisine in Spotswood? Amazing but true! It is Asian, but not a carbon copy of every other Chinese place. They do it their way, with good quality ingredients and a flair for flavor. I had a sautéed scallop and shrimp dish, purposely salty and lightly breaded. The scallops were like butter and the shrimp was also very good. We had ribs on the bone as an appetizer. The seasoning was unique and it was delicious. Yes, I did say Spotswood. Try it out.

Heard some good reviews on this place, so decided to give it a try. Been searching for great Chinese place in the East Brunswick area, and sad to say this wasn’t it. Went on a Tues evening, place was completely empty. Food was average at best, wouldn’t be going out of my way.

I have lived in East Brunswick for almost 20 years. I never went into this little restaurant because it looked old and dingy. After seeing the reviews on Unilocal,I decided to give it a try. When I walked in, I was pleasantly surprised. The décor inside was light and updated. I ordered a vegetable dish with with chicken and a beef with broccoli. Both were excellent. The vegetables were fresh, and the beef was from an excellent cut of meat. Some Chinese restaurants will use a poor quality cut of beef resulting in a tough and chewy texture. We also ordered the crab rangoon. This was the only dish that could have been improved. Perhaps because it was takeout, the wrapping was tough and chewy. However the stuffing and the dipping sauce were flavorful. I will definitely be back to try some more of their dishes.

I am a little white duck so I don’t usually go to Chinese Restaurants as they serve Roast duck. Especially ones that are supposed to have really good Roast duck. But this is one of those times that I gave in to a friend’s predilection for Chinese food(duck however was not allowed, LOL.) I ordered the Wonton Soup and the broth was delicious. The Hot & Sour Soup was also good, good different with a flavor I couldn’t detect, but also delicious. The General Tso’s Chicken was great as was the Pork Fried Rice which had lots of Pork in it. The service was friendly. The only negative was no free refills on soda so we drank water. Four stars for a Chinese Restaurant is going some for me. But that’s what it deserves.

I want to give this place more stars because it is a local, family owned restaurant. The woman at the counter is the matriarch of the family and is so so nice. She is great with the kids and really makes you feel welcome. Problem is the food is just OK. It is the normal everyday«Chinese» food. The kids eat it up. I, and this goes back to me being spoiled, like a little more effort in my Asian cuisine. I had a spicy shrimp and spinach dish here a few months ago that was pretty good but that has been it. Look, if you are in the area and are looking for somewhere to sit down and get a quick meal you can come here and have a very nice time.

Went back last night with my wife and my daughter. The owner in the front and the staff all made comments about how big my daughter is getting. They also told us to say«hi» to my in-laws for them; they are just too nice! The food was amazing(ASALWAYS) and prices were right(under $ 30 for two adults and a 3yr old that eats like one). We were in the Piscataway/S. Plainfield area and wanted chinese food. So yes, we drove the 15mi to Tung Hsing.
