We thoroughly enjoyed our organic food co-op membership in 2011-12. Having moved to TN from CA, with an exceptional growing season and rich soil in our former state, we had a spendid vegetable garden at home. Thus living in a rented condo for our first year here, we were limited in our ability to produce the veggies/fruits we desired. The co-op seemed a wonderful alternative. The Colvin family, who operate the Farm, is delightful, warm and friendly — and those who operate the Farmer’s Market(especially Chris and Caleb) are delightful and efficient. Yay for the produce because it is authentically organic and grown with care. Yet it’s pricey: $ 500 for a small share that feeds maybe 3 or possibly 4 people each week. Our primary issue is that there was no form or document where we were able to fill out our fruit/vegetable preferences from a list of the available offerings during the season(s) when the Farm grew them. And when we picked up our share, we might have been given lots of eggplant and only one tomato — we eat eggplant rarely, and we devour tomatoes. It seemed as though this happened(not just this scenario) more often than not. We gave away veggies we didn’t eat, and sadly threw away those not taken that were not appealing to our tastebuds. On occasion, we felt that the Farm offered a greater variety of «healthier looking» veggies and fruits for sale to the general populace at the Farmer’s Market than they did to the shareholders.(Just our observation, mind you, and we are only one among many.) So we have decided not to renew our membership. We remain fans, yet will choose the produce from what we deem is the best of the crop and the best of what we enjoy.
