This place has a little bit of everything for everyone. The poached eggs were perfectly cooked and yogurt/granola was out of this world. What made this place great was the store. A ton of unique, eclectic, organic and original stuff that was priced right.

Very vegetarian friendly! They have tofu and veggie scrambles along with many other meatless options. The whole grain blueberry pancakes were to die for. They also had some freshly baked pastries which were delicious. Great coffee as well. If you’re going for breakfast, plan on getting there at 8:00 to get a table. Otherwise, be prepared to wait. Also be sure there are no festivals going on. Every time my husband and I plan a drive out there for breakfast there is always some sort of festival going on such as Bob fest or Beatle fest and it’s a zoo down there with no parking and if you do make it in there, the menu is limited. I had the Athens scramble and it was very flavorful. It came with a side of salsa and a small piece of sourdough bread which I thought was a little odd. I would have preferred toast or an English muffin. They do not make eggs to order, only scrambled. My husband prefers over easy eggs but had to settle for scrambled. They were pretty bland. The sausages were an extra $ 2 and were brown and serve. He asked me to stop buying him those at the grocery store years ago and then we go out for a pricey breakfast and that’s what he got. Very disappointing. It would be nice if they offered some quality meat choices and eggs to order. The gift store is nice, although I believe they should really use at least half of that space for dining. I think that most people are there to eat not shop.

Stopped in for lunch with a couple of other people yesterday and had the most creative and delicious sandwich I have had in a very long time – a«grilling cheese» sandwich. It consisted of a thick slice of perfectly grilled cheese(with a solid, smooth texture) and was topped with roasted jalapenos, chipotle aioli, and greens. Served with a cup of soup or a salad, the meal was more than filling, but it was one of those meals you had to finish just because you knew you were not going to be having it again soon and would miss it. It was a beautiful end of summer day in Spring Green, and the café stop made the day all that much more delightful.

Can’t stop in Spring Green without visiting this gem. Great breakfast and lunch. Versatile menu with interesting dishes. Advertised as «old school comfort food with a creative twist.» Have to place your order at the counter, then the cashier hands you a table card with the name of a country. They deliver your food, but guests have to do the clearing. My burrito was immense – the size of a torpedo. Couldn’t finish it. Great soups. It’s not uncommon to be told there is a wait for your food. We were told half an hour and got our food in 10 minutes. The general store has an array of clothing(women’s), jewelry and other fun things. It’s fun to just browse.

This place is always good, and the food is always great. Ive been going for years. Quality of staff can vary a bit, but overall, it is a great breakfast place, and a very good lunch spot. Coffee is excellent also. Some days are just crazy busy, but they mange really well throughout the year, and quality is consistent. Even on the worst busy days, the wait is rarely 15 minutes.

I didn’t hate this place but the wait and treatment of customers was pretty disappointing. I waited 20 minutes for a hot drink to go before finally just leaving. Another time where we came to sit down and eat the food was good, but cold. It seems like they might need more people in the kitchen, but maybe if you catch them on a slow day you’ll have a good experience.

I usually order the chicken salad sandwich. I LOVE the bread it comes on. Always soft and delicious. If I stop for breakfast, I like the cinnamon twist and their large variety of hot teas. It can be hard to find a seat, but is usually worth the wait.

Really liked the place. Nice menu, coffee was good. I had chicken nachos– Thai style. Different but really good. Lots of care not soggy. Will try again. My wife had the chicken salad sandwich. She lied it also.

We were out exploring the country side and we found ourselves in Spring Green around lunch time. With the help of Unilocal we decided on the General Store café. Like others have mentioned there is a sign that gives directions on how to proceed. You look over the menu first, then order at the counter. The lady at the counter gives you a flag, then you grab your utensils, condiments, and find a seat. There is a small dining room with a doorway that leads to additional seating out on an enclosed porch. I ordered a hummus sandwich on gluten free bread and my dining companion ordered a BLT wrap with chipotle mayo. We also added chips and two lemonades. An employee delivered our food and noticed that they had forgotten to include my lemon tahini sauce. She said she would be right back with it, but she never actually returned. What we noticed most about the food was the freshness. Clean and fresh. The taste was pretty good too, but after we ate we were still hungry. Afterwards, we watched to see what other patrons were doing with their dishes. We noticed everyone clearing their own tables and putting dishes into tubs by the kitchen. So we did the same. The check had been delivered with our food and had instructions to pay at the register, which is out in the main area of the general store. Before we paid, we looked around the store and decided on some incense. It’s a nice little café, would have been nice if there were a little more food with each entrée, but perhaps we just didn’t order enough, or the right food. If we find ourselves in the area we’ll stop in again.

The GS is the best. Great food and awesome people. It’s like home. Get your own coffee and bus your own table. Works just fine. You might have to interact with visitors and locals, make eye contact and communicate… the horrors! Get there early! If you’re lucky you can get a Cinnimon Twist. Here’s the deal: Notice that the cash register is OVERTHERE. Notice the signs that explain the process of ordering. It’s all very simple and fully documented. Get your face out of your phone and look around… interact with your environment. The place works. It’s a local hangout and a visitors delight. Be nice. Smile. Enjoy an awesome meal cooked by someone who respects food and have some semi locally roasted yummy coffee. Notice the sign that says«Slow Food Zone». Chill.

We always visit here when we’re in town. Delicious food with occasional live music and a boutique of interesting clothes, jewelry, food and other fun stuff on the other side of the café.

Great food, wonderful shop and adorable location. I had the veggie chili and the chicken salad sandwich — both out of this world. I purchased several things in the connected store, including a beautiful necklace for my mother-in-law. Wonderful place.

Went here for breakfast on a July Monday morning after a quick, non-cooking camping stay in Tower Hill State Park. More than adequate for the job — good, fresh, local ingredients in most of the dishes. My 10-year-old son really liked his breakfast burrito with chorizo and commented on the quality of the chorizo, which wasn’t as greasy and queasiness-inducing as some. He was also impressed with the orange juice, although I couldn’t quite tell if it was fresh-squeezed. I had the ham and cheese quiche, which had a nicely done crust and was tasty. The bottomless coffee cup at $ 2.29 was just what I needed, as I’m getting kind of old to camp comfortably even on a thick camping pad. Had a couple of excellent cups each of two dark blends(the coffee is self-serve from pump thermoses). My small daughter(5) loved her cinnamon twist with the maple-tinged frosting and mentioned it a couple of days later. Can’t remember what my wife had — one of the healthy options, like oatmeal, which made her happy and she had no gripes with(always a good sign). She would have liked a slightly larger pot for her tea, but overall she was pleased. Great atmosphere; cozy and homey. Clean and well-lit, with lots of locals obviously making it their place of choice for breakfast, including many seniors, although the crowd was generally sort of hip and hippie-ish. A second dining area, porchlike and connected to the main one, had several tables looking out onto a green area with trees and railroad tracks. Overall, quite pleasant, and the store itself is a treat, with great toys, women’s clothing, food, cleaning supplies … a hodgepodge of thoughtful and organic stuff. I’d rate the service as «grumpy but lovable aunts.» I got the impression from the signage and polite-but-not-warm responses that they tolerate and probably appreciate tourists in the same way your conservative relatives grudgingly accept your offbeat but still successful careers. Not a deal-breaker by any stretch and probably adds charm. But how do they expect us to read the signs anyway — what a great store and a great atmosphere. This is a fine place and will always be a stop for us in Spring Green.

Every time I visit home, and my mom and I are about to run«errands» — as in, shop for things we don’t need — I ask, where do you want to have lunch? The answer is always The General Store. When you first enter, you’ll see the main store, where you can find clothes, organic products ranging from soap to hand towels, and a great selection of kid games and toys — many educational and highly rated. To the right is the restaurant. Order at the counter, where, instead of an order number, you’ll get a world flag to place on your table. Pay after you’re done at the main store checkout. Across the board, the food is just good. Sandwiches, soups, salads, pretty much anything you could want for a casual lunch out. There are specials everyday — two soups, possibly a sandwich or entrée type dish(order the mushroom stroganoff if it’s on the board), a meat quiche and a meatless quiche. I’m fond of the 5-bean vegetarian chili — lots of spices, a little heat, and very good topped with cheese and served with chips and salsa. You can also just go in for a tea(Numi) or coffee and a pastry. Whether you live nearby or are just passing through, The General Store is worth a visit.

I really like this place. They have bulk goods, fashionable apparel(mostly women’s), gifts, with an excellent café. I ordered a latte and it was pretty spot on, at $ 3.95 I sort of expected it to be good, though it was probably an 18 oz drink so it’s worth it. I ordered the quiche of the day with the side salad and it was ooohhh so good. The quiche was perfect, with a very buttery crust(if you don’t like butter, you wouldn’t enjoy this quiche) served with warm bread and a good salad. The salad had beet greens, tomatoes, fresh red onions, and the home made dressing is great. The atmosphere is pretty great as they have outdoor seating on the porch, a side sunroom type area which is more quiet, and a main dining area. They were really busy the day I went but I still managed to get my food in about 20 minutes with a long line at 12:30pm. I really have no complaints with this place. The food is great, the prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere comfortable.

The General Store is way more hip and interesting than it sounds. Which is basically the motto of Spring Green, WI. The general part of the store is filled with organic, low impact, cool toys and toiletries and everything in between. The have jewelry from local artists and a small grocery section in the back with a ton of spices and herbs in bulk. I dig the local honey and Huzzah lip balm(you can get it in chai and earl grey flavors!). They have a hodgepodge of wooden tables and chair in the café area; very homey and comfortable. They have great creative, fresh and vegetarian foods and all are delish. I got the home made hummus sandwich with gazpacho soup for lunch summer 2012 and it was an amazing combo and just what I needed during the heat wave!

The general store is a gift shop and café just south the main street. With near-by attractions of House on the Rock(read: tourist trap on the hill), American Players Theater and Taliesin, Spring Green is one of those«quaint» touristy little villages that caters to artsy urbanites in their 50s and 60s with lots of time on their hands and cash in their pockets. The café has that cool upscale feel. The service procedure is a little odd. They post instructions on a sign behind the counter but it gets lost in the sea of other signs. The counter lady is a little surly, like she expects everyone to already know the system or to have read the hidden instructions. For my fellow newcomers, you order at the counter and they give you a flag from a different county(that’s cooler than a number). They bring your food and when finished you bus your own table and pay at the register in the store. It’s a good system but since it’s unusual they should be a little more helpful walking you through it. Especially since so many of their clientele are tourists. Our food was decent. I had the Italian sandwich(poor choice), the wife had the Waldorf salad and daughter had the burrito(my fav). My wife and daughter enjoyed it more than I did. It’s a «cute» little place, just not my scene. I don’t care for the attitude.

A charming place for a delicious lunch. Having just toured the freakish surreal dreamscape known as «House on the Rock», we needed a little comfort and serenity. This place provided both. I had an portobello/avocado panini, and a bowl of gazpacho. Both were very tasty. The folks who work there were very friendly! You can also get a cold beer or glass of wine which is nice. Grab a baked good on your way out. I had a ginger/white chocolate/craisin brownie. Heavenly!
