Appliance Rescue

We called Alan to repair our dishwasher that was not draining. Instead of taking us for a bath, he recommended a simple fix that can be found in the internets for free. Sadly, even after watching the video, our repair skills remained so rudimentary we still needed help, so Alan arrived, demonstrated the simple repair, a lesson well worth $ 50.00. Great to find a repair service we can trust!!!

Alan came out to fix my refrigerator icemaker and water dispenser and did a fantastic job. He was very professional and had my refrigerator icemaker replaced and water dispenser working in about 20 minutes. I would definitely recommend him for any appliance issues.

Alan was very helpful and quick. I was impressed that after leaving a message during thanksgiving he called first thing Monday morning and was able to come by that afternoon. He fixed our microwave and I paid pretty much exactly what I thought I would have paid. I’m keeping his contact info so if anything else goes wrong with our other appliances he is my first call. Oh and you can’t beat a full warranty from him for an entire year.

Alan was fantastic to work with. He called me promptly to understand the issues I was having with my dishwasher and freezer. These were both fixed quickly and at a price that was better than I was expecting. This is definitely the place to call.

Seriously, just call Sears, Alan was a waste of time.
I was annoyed initially with Sears because I had to wait for them to call me back within 48 hours just to schedule an appointment, so I called Alan. He definitely showed up before Sears did, but only gave a partial diagnosis of the problem because he spent so little time inspecting the washing machine.
I had stopped running the washing machine because there was a burning rubber smell so that was why I called Alan. I mentioned that water would also leak out of the bottom, but made it clear that my main concern was the burning rubber smell. He came back to me with the repair cost for the water leak and said that he didn’t smell the burning rubber. That was odd because everyone else could smell it. Turns out Alan was at my house for maybe 15 minutes and just didn’t run the machine long enough to smell it (I had to have a family member meet him at the house).
When I asked Alan if he ran the machine through a full cycle to identify the burning rubber smell his response was «Don’t have that kind of time.» If that was the case then he shouldn’t have taken the appointment.
I think perhaps he didn’t want to diagnosis the full problem because doing so would have made it clear that it was cheaper to just buy a new machine and there wouldn’t have been a repair job to do. If that’s not the reason then Alan just does half-​assed work.
Two days later Sears showed up, spent almost an hour at my house ultimately to get paid nothing because after detailing what was wrong, the guy didn’t charge us when he recommended that the machine wasn’t worth fixing (and he didn’t go into a sales pitch for buying a new washer from Sears). Sears was worth the wait if Alan is the alternative.

On a recent visit to Texas, my mother had some difficulties with her refrigerator unit. She called around to several places and after unsatisfactory conversations, finally settled on a nearby company with an excellent Angie’s List rating. She told me that the owner (Alan) gave her a guarantee that he would be there within twenty minutes of the scheduled appointment or she would receive get $ 20.00 off her bill. He also told her that he would be the person coming to the house and not a general contractor which made my mother feel secure with her decision. I really liked that the time window was so small and that we wouldn’t be tethered at home all day. I would have chosen a later appointment but I’m a night owl who doesn’t care for awakening before 10:00!
Anyway, the day of the appointment came. Alan arrived, as promised, before his scheduled time. My mother waved him inside when she realised he was waiting in the driveway. I didn’t feel comfortable with the idea of my mother alone with a repairman so I came downstairs. My fears were totally unfounded and either I was still half-​asleep but the entire thing was painless. Alan looked at the refrigerator and assessed the situation. He wrote down the price for her and soon after, problem was fixed. He gave her the defective parts and explained the repair to her, which she appreciated. AND bonus thing was that it was cheaper than we imagined it to be so win/​win all around.
If I could give another star for friendliness, Alan would get it easily. He was prompt, congenial and not creepy, the latter of which is important when inviting a stranger into one’s house. He’s been in business for nearly eight years and gives free estimates for appliance repair. While he was talking to my mother, I overheard him mention that his son was also learning the family business and would be accompanying him on jobs. One thing that I don’t know is if Alan’s company services Houston addresses. My mother lives in The Woodlands so it might just be the surrounding communities. Can’t hurt to call though, right?
