I drove all the way from SW Houston to Bernie’s Backyard for the burgers that my Unilocaler friend Jamie A has been bragging about. I’m not a vegetarian. But whenever I see an opportunity with vegetarian burger I never let it pass. At Black Garlic, there is no exception. I can’t remember the long name. But it was made with various superfoods and hearty seeds. Then topped it off with melted Havarti cheese and fresh arugula. I was busy enjoying it and didn’t pay attention to what’s in the sauce. It was so delicious; I guess I’ll just call it secret sauce. Price was well-worth it, considering the farm-to-table quality. I didn’t care about the wait because I wanted to tour around this food truck park. Yup, nothing else captured my attention but Black Garlic.

A fantastic food truck and burger. Always at Bernie’s Backyard off I-45N now. A ton of burgers and other sandwiches to choose from. A little pricey for a burger and fries. With tip coming close to $ 20, though it is really well done. They use 44 Farms beef, and with their beef being all the rage with every new burger joint to open, none have figured out how to cook it this well. Juicy, perfectly medium, and I inhaled my burger as fast as I could. I think I ordered right before the rush, cause my number was called in about 10 minutes. Others with me seemed to take a little longer. Anyway, went with the Blue Burger and a side of regular fries. ½ pound burger with blue cheese, custom made bun, and fried kale. The kale kind of through me for a loop, but damn if I did not love every bit of it. Like I said, I could not put the burger down once I started eating, and it was gone in a second. The fries are really good as well. Hand cut, but thin shoe string sized. So crispy I wanted to jump up and dance for joy. A 4 ½ star, and I am basically only taking off a half star because of the price. Though you get a lot of food, cooked fresh, and absolutely great. One of the best burgers in the Houston area, let alone Spring. Thanks to Jamie A. for setting up the BOTMUYE. Otherwise, I probably would never have tried this awesome burger.

Where did the burger idea birth from exactly, I am sure there are several hands raised, theories, and fights for the claim to fame of developing a food that is widely enjoyed and revolutionized by chefs on a daily basis. But it takes a true burger aficionado to have concocted the deliciousness I enjoyed today. The Scorpion $ 14(Per menu — ½ Pound Patty Topped with Roasted Pepper Pico, Avocado and a Balsamic Reduction Between a Grilled Craft Bun with Spicy Togarashi Aioli, Artisan Bacon and Havarti Cheese). This burger comes with a heat scale,(1 – 4; wasn’t even told of 4, found that out through a fellow Unilocaler, and I am intrigued!) I went for level 2 which was described to me as a heat level of a raw jalapeño with seeds included, totally sold, bring the heat! Patty was cooked a perfect medium, its not often I can say that when given the option to request temp. Level 2 had a slight kick(definitely want to go back for that 3!). Also got a side Chimi Churri Fries $ 6, shoe string cut with strong tastes of chopped parsley, olive oil, minced garlic(garlic was fresh too, kisses anyone?). While price seems steep, the quality of the food is phenomenal; free range hormone free beef, farm to table ingredients! Definitely cannot thank Jamie A. enough for introducing me to this establishment. i

I went to their foodie event last year when they were still in Tomball. We sampled a lot of items and it was all delicious. Today, I visited their new location at Bernie’s Backyard to try their cabano. Yummy, good amount of salt, and the layers of flavor with pickles, pork, ham, swiss cheese, mustard, mayo, and buttered roll. The sandwich is about a foot long but grilled flat. You can easily share, but it will be hard after you taste it.

First time today. I had the chimichuri fries and the pretzel Burger with bacon. The fries were a nice diversion but not something I would order regularly(although they were quite tasty). Burger was excellent. Juicy(even though I ordered it well done); flavorful and not too thick or thin. Bacon was crispy but not overly salty. Bun was soft but chewy with a complementary taste to the meat. Overall a 4 star experience. Note: if you are price sensitive you may want to avoid as it is about $ 16 for the common Burger and fries. But excellent food.

I don’t quite understand the bitching about the price of the burgers. You have to pay for quality. Not only that, you are saving money since you don’t have to tip a server. The meat is fresh ground every morning and is local beef. That ain’t cheap to do. One reviewer reviewed the restaurant without actually going. WTF? Anyway, I have been numerous times since my last review and the quality is the same high quality it has always been. It is by far our favorite burger. We will keep going back as long as they keep pumping out the beef.

I’m kinda sad, this place used to be right outside our neighborhood but now it’s across town… Without the convenience of it being right there I give this place four stars

If you’re looking for a burger and are not sure where to find it… Black Garlic at Bernies Backyard is all you need to know! All fresh ingredients with a Texas sized patty to match! My top choice for sure! And if you’re ambitious try their hot sauce! Beware! Thanks Cliff, Excellent food!

I was very excited to try this place out because I love burgers and F my personal list of the top 3 in town. I really like the atmosphere at Bernie’s backyard and the offerings at this car are very intriguing. I tried the standard half pound beef and brisket burger at the recommended medium temperature. I also got the chimichurri fries which were very good but cost $ 6. Overall the burger was very good quality but not worth $ 14 and somehow contrary to the amazing description of the burger didn’t stand out to my palate. There are several $ 9 burger places that stand out compared to this. I might go back one day and try the pretzel cow burger but spending $ 20 for a burger from a food truck is not something I would do unless it was absolutely spectacular. I think there is a law of diminishing returns with burgers and prices

Hamburger food truck at Bernie’s Backyard. Excellent tasting ½ lb hamburger; but they cost $ 10 – 14, with fries and drink, expect ~$ 20, which is a lot, but it is a very good burger.

We came here the last day before they moved from 249. I tried their BLT and fries and they were fantadtic! And their warm pretzel sticks with caramel sauce were heavenly.

This was Quite possibly the best burger ice ever had Not sure what I had now but it was with blue cheese fries kale bacon and just full of yummy. The best quality of beef ever. Side of special fries. Again I forget but it’s whatever Asian twist option they have. Was going to have water but noticed in he AC part a bar and they had an individual wine hat I recognized from a shark tank investment and honestly it wasn’t bad for cheap wine. Pretty good. Overall rather pricey burger though. It was good. But may scare a lot of people off. I hear they have live music on Friday and Saturday nights. That’s cool and this price is good for a dinner with music. But food truck lunch may be high. It’s in «Bernies back yard» which is a brand new. Good luck finding. They need to update their Facebook page and guide people in.

So, after reading some rave reviews about this place on a neighborhood message board, Hubby and I decided to give it a try for lunch before seeing a movie. I decided on the Sauced Pretzel(burger with bacon, blue cheese sauce & fried kale on a pretzel bun) and Hubby got the Pretzeled Pig(pulled pork, cheddar, bacon & slaw on a pretzel bun). My burger was cooked perfectly and very tasty! I loved the tang of the sauce and the slight sweet in the bun-the tastes all went together well. Hubby liked his too, but wished the suicide slaw was spicier. This missed 5 stars for me for two reasons. 1-Both sandwiches were a bit on the greasy side. 2-The price point is pretty high. Will we be back? Yes, most likely, when a burger craving hits.

Pretty darn good burger. I had the Waygu, medium well. Very juicy and full of flavor. I wasn’t too big on the chimichuri fries. I prefer mine a little soggier and not so shoestring crispy. It was $ 23 for the burger, fries and drink so maybe next time I’ll split fries.

Just finished eating. Don’t know what all the rave is about. This burger was good but nothing about the seasoning stood out that made me think that this is the only place that offers this type of burger. The chimi churri fries were ok but kind of a let down. It’s just fries drowned in olive oil with some type of green herb. I can’t describe the taste of the herb but I mainly tasted the olive oil. I honestly prefer Smashburger’s smash fries over these. Maybe I should try a different burger if I come back? Would I recommend this place? Yes, but if it’s out of the way for you, you’re not really missing out. You could just go to Becks Prime or Smashburger.

This place came highly recommended from a friend. I was excited to try it but had my reservations that it wouldn’t live up to the hype. Boy did it ever. I am so happy the first time I went was the tasting because I got to try so many Delicious things. 1. Tried two different versions of their burgers as sliders rather than the regular size. Both amazing!!! I don’t know which I liked best they were just amazing. Blue cheese, pretzel bun and those chimi churri fries yes please!!! 2. The buffalo risotto balls, no clue exactly what I ate but I will eat it again ASAP. 3. Pork burger was also amazing but can’t beat the burgers. 4. Tiramisu was literally the best ice ever had because I usually hate it and this was amazing. Clearly somewhere very south has frozen over hard because I never thought I would see the day I would be raving over a food truck or a burger place but take my advice and try them out you will not regret it.

Just discovered this food truck last week! They have the best burgers hands down in Houston! Been twice already. I am a burger snob, very picky, want it cooked perfectly. They do a perfect medium rare burger. First time I split the pretzeled cow with my mom and the second time I took my husband and we shared the special of the day burger. Both times outstanding! We plan to go every Friday nowwell worth the drive if you don’t live close!

This ain’t no burger shack. Quality, quality food… great service. Fast; less than 10 minutes had our food. This is as good, if not better than any craft burger I’ve had in Houston. Chicken, beef, pork and even veggie… everything goes on a craft bun, or a Bavarian pretzel!

On our never ending quest to find Houston’s best burger, it may have been in our backyard all along. Just happened upon this place in the Tomball newspaper of all things. Only a couple minutes from our house so we gave it a try. It’s a small, unassuming yellow truck in front of the old Three Lakes subdivision. No tables, no crowds. Very easy to miss. Ordered the namesake«Black Garlic» burger with chimi-churi fries. A few minutes later the order was done and we were on our way home to eat. We are super picky on burgers — check my burger list — but this burger was amazing. All the things I look for. Quality meat, perfectly cooked to order — rare in this case — which very few Houston places do right. Thin but tasty buttery buns and a variety of savory toppings that enhanced, but not over-powered the meat. Fries were good — though the chimi-churi sauce was super oily and a little over-powering. I would probably opt for regular fries next time. A few things to note: This place is very expensive. $ 19 for burger and fries from a food truck is a bit crazy — I knocked Bernie’s Burger Bus for this exact issue. Though the difference here is Black Garlic may actually be worth it. But I could see people walking away not knowing the price beforehand. Also there’s no seating. So take it home or eat in your car. Last, this would be the ideal place to serve some craft beer — though I’m sure there’s all sorts of legal hurdles there. Still — they made an amazing burger. I don’t give out 5 stars on first visit — but if this place is consistent, they’ll probably be getting one from me soon.

As a foodie, and a world traveler, I have been blessed by hidden gems all over the world. Those local finds, that the locals know, and secretly whisper in your ear, if you promise not to tell anyone. I refuse to keep Black Garlic a secret. This food truck is yellow,(not black) parked in an innocuous Tomball location next to a gas station(not a typical hipster hangout) and in front of a very cool new vape shop called Spyglass(a very cool place to hang and vape — thanks Kari, Caleb and Mitch). As a person who qualifies for an AARP discount, I have had a few burgers in my time, probably many more than I needed. Actually, way more than I needed, so it would be difficult to say one burger was better or the best compared to another, but stop… Black Garlic and Executive Chef Cliff simply created the absolute best burger I have ever had in my life. It was a ½ pound of beautifully medium rare Wagyu Kobe beef with wonderfully fatty pancetta and cheese perfectly arranged on a fresh, sweet pretzel bun. I cannot remember the condiments, i really don’t care, what ever was on there, it was just amazing. The burger actually melted in my mouth, perfect seasoning… just a stunning creation. Oh, and he added a fried egg as I requested. Yummmm I ordered the chimichurri fries to accompany, and the chimi was as goos as any that I tried in Argentina. The menu is small, creative, absolutely fresh and local ingredients, and I will return often. I hear the ribs are killer, and he does a pork belly egg roll that I cannot wait to try. All I can say — is go to Black Garlic in Tomball. It is worth the trip.
