There aren’t a lot of airports in the Houston area that are easy access to downtown, but some local friends recommended Hooks because driving in and out of the city would be the least obnoxious from this side of town. We parked at Gill(the FBO owned by the airport) and noted that our little Cessna was small potatoes on the field next to all of the charter jets. The front desk staff was friendly, and after we all realized that I had had a miscommunication with the rental car agency, they let us take a courtesy car to head over to Bush Intercontinental to pick one up(the only rental place still open after hours). When we were driving out, the main gate we would have used was closed, so it took us about twenty minutes of weaving around hangars to find the next one… some signs would have been helpful for that. Fuel was pretty reasonably priced and we were able to go ahead and leave the rental car with the FBO to save time and hassle heading out. So absolutely nothing wrong with Hooks as a stop; it is exactly what a jet-focused GA airport &FBO should be(with the notable up-side, of course, that the FBO is *not* one of the big chains who disdains single engine prop plans).
