Ventured out of the house for a «dinner out» and settled on Hana-Saki after shopping at Marshall’s next door. The outside is definitely lacking appeal, but the inside is welcoming, clean and spacious. The house was all but empty for a late dinner mid-week; fine with us, but still we decided to sit at the sushi bar. The sushi chef was professional and gratuitous. Despite the fact that we had ordered a shrimp tempura appetizer, he graciously gave us an amuse bouche of seafood salad(crab, cucumber, tempura flakes and spicy mayo) gratis. I inhaled mine, while my fiancé drank his miso soup($ 2.50). The shrimp tempura was awesome. Hot, fresh and full of flavor. Only two shrimp are included, and I would like to see a better variety of veggies(only had an onion ring, a broccoli floret, a couple sweet potatoes and a mushroom). I opted for a Singapore Sling(alcoholic drink) which, like other reviewers mention, tasted a bit watered down($ 9). For sushi, I ordered a spicy tuna roll and a Rock’n’Roll roll(eel and salmon skin). Both were really good but I wish that the Rock’n’Roll one included actual baked eel, not just the skin, as the consistency was really lacking. Additionally, the sushi was cut into different sized pieces, some so large they were difficult to eat. Jamie ordered a combo with three rolls, which came out incorrectly(no Boston roll, had subbed a spicy salmon roll). We brought it to the attention of the sushi chef, and he notified the manager, who took 10% off the bill. Basic rolls cost $ 4 – 5, with specialty rolls ranging from $ 7 – 15. For two people(with 1 alcoholic drink and 1 soda), dinner and an appetizer ran ~$ 40 with tip. A little too expensive to do once a week, but definitely worth doing every once in awhile. Great service and management, coupled with quality sushi ingredients makes it an easy choice to return.

My friend and I had a very enjoyable luncheon recently at Hana Saki. Tucked away next to a Marshall’s you would not think much of this place upon inspection but through their doors lies an expansive space that caters to both the Hibachi and sushi lover. Arriving towards the end of the lunch crowd — the restaurant was not busy but there were one or two parties enjoying the Hibachi experience. I ordered the Sashimi lunch special and my dining companion ordered the three roll combination. Each was about $ 10 each and also came with soup and salad. The came out piping hot and had a nice saltiness to it. The salad was lack — Iceburg lettuce that was drowning in some type of flavorless sesame dressing. I attempted a rescue mission, but the leaves were down for the count. Thankfully the main part of my meal was the star of the show — the Sashimi lunch special presented before me(check the picture) was almost(and I mean almost) too pretty to eat. The true test however was the taste — those who enjoy sushi have all been to those establishments where the taste and texture don’t always match the appearance set before you. Thankfully I did not have that problem — thickly sliced portions of sushi grade salmon, tuna, and several other varieties fish were all tender and succulent. My friend(a regular at Hana Saki) raved about his spicy tuna rolls and loved how in addition to the consistent food quality, he never has seen his food presented the same way twice. I do note that my experience and ultimately review/rating is different from many others I have read. Maybe it was because I came during the lunch hour or that I did not have Hibachi nor did I use a Groupon but this goes to show that some places are worth the experience regardless of the other reviews.
