Being a native Springfielder, I had been interested in visiting this museum since it opened. Several of my relatives have volunteered there, and perform research for the exhibits. The quality rivals that of the Smithsonian. And the information is astounding. As Erik L. details in his review, the material is significant for understanding better the transformation of the Industrial Age in America. It is also poignant to understand the reversal of fortune for this city. Very, very informative.

I have been to the Capitol Building in Washington, DC and to Liberty Hall in Philadelphia, but to me the Heritage Center explains almost more of American History. At the heritage Center you will go through history and really understand the evolution of a middle sized Midwestern town, Springfield. But, this museum is not only important to Springfield. There are so many cities around the U.S. that have gone through the same things and events as Springfield so this museum is really important to everyone. There are so many great places in the museum, but if I would have to point out three I would have to say the detailed time line where one can follow what happened in Springfield as important events were happening in the country, the 3D model of what the city used to look like, and the restored Westcott Automobile on the second floor. This is truly a must on your visit to Springfield or an easy detour from I-70 and since it is free I highly recommend a donation.
