Kimball Towers

In my opinion, The Kimball Towers condominiums — which still feature some apartments — are the best in Western Massachusetts.
Built in 1910 and opened in 1911 as The Hotel Kimball, the red-​brick, neo-​classical building was once advertised as «Western Massachusetts finest hotel.» During the 1960s, it became The Sheraton Kimball Hotel and remained a 4-​star hotel until it was developed into condominiums during the mid-​1980s.
When it was a hotel, the Kimball hosted famous guests like Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy, movie stars, and visiting royalty. It still features a grand lobby and large ballroom with a balcony overlooking its parquet dance floor.
In the late 1980s, the Kimball’s condominium developer filed for bankruptcy before completing all renovations, (citing the project’s exorbitant costs.) The building’s future seemed in doubt until the new millenium, when financially-​stable ownership purchased The Kimball and Metro Center Springfield started a resurgence.
Apartments here are priced according to size and number of bedrooms; however, there are still a few that are almost completely unadorned, like lofts, leftover from the original developer’s bankruptcy. These units are truly steals if one has the desire to either purchase or rent one and fix it up – because generally, they go for well-​below what an apartment should in such a beautiful, historic building.
