The hubs and I needed a tiny getaway. We love to camp out in our tent but the weather looked iffy so we didn’t really want to commit to our usual campground in Florida. Instead we loaded up the car & took the short drive from New Orleans to Tickfaw State park. We’ve camped there a few times and the swamp and trails are lovely. Springfield, LA is the perfect country setting for those needing to escape the city for some true backwoods, swamp life! It’s far enough from the city that you can see all the stars, there’s a homemade ___place every mile or so, and the air is clean. Once we pulled up to the Tickfaw register area, however, we were informed that they were reconstructing the primitive tent sight and that it wouldn’t be open until February. When we asked them where else we could go they had no clue. Very frustrated, I forced my phone to pull up a GPS signal(I would’ve climbed a tree if I had to) and the closest result was Lizard Creek. We were met by a jolly older man, complete with white hair & potbelly, riding on his four wheeler. He directed us to the tent sight, which thankfully was away from the RV section(but not much), told us he would be back, and rode off. We began to unpack and worked out a perfect space to pitch the tent where we could admire all the the swamp had to offer, meanwhile trying to separate ourselves from the small RV lot close by. The creek had the usual lazy feel with Cypress trees and moss, there was also also a freshly built long dock along the side complete with benches for fishing, or just sitting. In the time that we were arranging everything, a few boats went by and another camper further away pulled out his guitar and played some CCR! The owner then came back and began to tell us the story of not only why/how he ended up with the property, but also how much it costs to keep up & advertise as well. He said he was getting older & it seemed he was trying the same pitch on campers in order to find someone to take it over. He informed us that he gets the runoff from the State Park which confused us as the workers at Tickfaw didn’t mention his place at all. He gave us his card, we gave him $ 15 for the night, he helped us move around the picnic table to a better spot, and we didn’t see him again. That night we cooked dinner over the fire, laid out on the dock to star-gaze, and appreciated the quiet. They have a coke machine, a place to buy ice, and a surprisingly clean, large bathroom complete with a shower stall, all a short walking distance from the tent. Near our tent was a great fire pit with some large logs already there. And I loved the fact that there were outlet posts for each tent area. The only things we would change were the bright orange light shining down on our tent from the RV section, maybe a fence to really separate the tents from everything else, and canoes to rent! Other than that, we really enjoyed ourselves and will definitely be returning.
