Good BBQ + Cheap + Fast + Authentic The building is old, the servers are nonplussed and it is in a residential area. Go.Eat.BBQ.Now.

Excellent BBQ, not to be missed! Take a trip to Main Ave for some historically excellent food, a homey, inviting atmosphere and cold Budweiser«on draw». Feed your soul and your belly at this local, family-run, unique and outstanding old-joint! Really really excellent. I wish I could stay and chat with the old men sitting at the bar but I gotta run…2Dorksontheroad.com

Expensive Excellent beef bbq though @($ 9.75) Decent tucked away place. Nice staff. Just has challenging value. Even charges .25 cents for payment method other than cash. $ 1.25 refill fees, etc.

Good food, good staff. I’ve found myself here repeatedly, despite only living in SGF for 3 months.

Located in the heart of a Springfield neighborhood, Pappy’s Place BBQ gives you an opportunity to experience a step back in time. This is America at her best… what we are all about. BBQ beef, chicken, pork… Pappy’s Place has it all. We ordered the pulled chicken and pulled beef sandwiches with fries… delicious. James, our server was friendly and accommodating. The pulled chicken was not on the menu and James knew of some available in the fridge ready to heat and serve. For a change from the chain food restaurants that are woven into the fabric of our major highways, Pappy’s Place BBQ is a recommended stop… but go early, on most nights they close by 8pm.

Remember this is an acquired tate! Most of us who give it high star’s grew up eating it. Is it the best BBQ you will ever have in your life? Absolutely not! But it is a Springfield tradition, and there are definitely not may places in America like this anymore. If you want a real taste of Springfield, and a pork sandwich that hasn’t changed in over 60 year’s. Then you have to come here. It’s just as much about memories for most of us as it is about the food… So «NO» it’s not the best food in town. But if you want to enter into a piece of Springfields soul. Then you must walk through these door, and order a PBR and a pork sandwich!

I visit Springfield about 5 or 6 times a year. One of my favorite places to eat is Pappy’s. The food tastes great to me and I love the neighborhood dive atmosphere. Smoking is no longer allowed anywhere indoors in Springfield(new city ordinance) but when it was allowed it didn’t bother me. Quite often the have live music, which is tough in cold weather because they squeeze the musicians in front of the entrance! Great service too. I love it.

They have great barbeque and a wonderful mellow atmosphere. Have beer and sometimes bands in the evenings.

Small hole in the wall in a small neighborhood on Main Street. They have the longest running liquor license in Springfield and were the first to serve after prohibition. The beer is served in a frost mug and everything down to the bar stools are old school. The building has a capacity of 23 people and they also have outside seating. It is truly an experience all in itself. I came here first with low expectations but was blown away. They food is always really good and their yellow bbq sauce is fantastic. If you can, get there for live music and sit outside on a summer night. It’s an awesome time.

Such a neat place to eat. I love the décor on the inside. It reminds me of the mom and pop diners back home. It’s a very small place. The service was good and so was the food. I would go back.

I am shocked this place has so many high reviews. I could overlook the grossness of the place if the food was stellar, but i have had better bbq from cafeterias. It is a hole in the wall type establishment. Meaning seating is pretty beat up, floors are rough, place is dirty. After walking in i thought, well I will give it a shot because of the high rating on Unilocal and i was disappointed. I ordered their staple pulled pork with a rib and my wife got the bbq nachos. Positives: Service was friendly. Negatives: Food Was Very Bland, didn’t finish my rib or sandwich and got a snack from another place on the way back home. My wife had about 4 bites of the nachos. The buns, fries and nachos themselves were very cheap tasting. The place was very dirty. Tables and chairs look like they are original. Floor is cracking.

It’s not on the menu, but the open face chili cheeseburger is amazing! Just be sure and ask them to stir the chili first. Pulled pork is always flavorful and tender and moist. The andouille sausage is also pretty great, especially if you can stand a little crying while eating one. Spicy!

Best BBQ in Springfield! I’ve been going here all of my life and it is without a doubt the best dive in town. Love it!

The pulled chicken sandwich had good flavor and the size small overflowed from the bun and was filling. The Krinkle cut fries were crispy and the coke in a can was refreshing. $ 1.25 for can of coke and $ 6.50 for sandwich w fries.

Picked this place off Unilocal because it seemed like people liked it and I was extremely disappointed. We were traveling to Las Vegas, Nevada from Saint Louis and thought we would stop at a local place. The food was okay, not the best BBQ I’ve had. That wasn’t the problem though. The problem was the customer service, which was pretty much non existent. The lady who runs the place is very impersonal and acts like she is doing you a favor being there. She barely said anything to us and when she did, she was sarcastic. Funny thing is, there was multiple signs around the place saying«be nice or get out»…I guess they forgot their own rules?!

Daily special with pulled pork and fries and blackberry cobbler was great. Large size is very generous. The cobbler was great. Yes, it is old, small and needs updating but that is part of Pappy’s charm. This is the oldest neighborhood restaurant in Springfield and a 4th generation family run business.

5 stars for nostalgia alone. America is running out of places like Pappy’s. Its old, a little grimy, and amazing. It’s the perfect towny bbq place without the attitude. If you are not a local or a regular, who cares?! The lady that runs the place is awesome. Tell her where you are from. Tell her a story. She genuinely likes the people that come into her restaurant. The food actually is very good. Every time i go i get the daily special: Pulled pork with golden sauce and fries. It has never let me down once. Eating at pappy’s feels like going back in time. It’s on an old street corner in a neighborhood from back in the day when Springfield had businesses on street corners in neighborhoods. Order a beer and strike up a conversation with the lady behind the bar. You will be glad you did.

Oh man for $ 7, you get about a pound of tasty pulled pork on a bun with pot. chips. The pork is tender and tasty, the home made bbq sauce is tasty. Chips are whatever, and, the bun is stale. Its all about the pork, so I didnt care, plus they top it with some nice coleslaw. You can add a rib or smoked sausage for an additional $ 2.50 each, so of course I had to try both. The sausage was spicey and delish. The rib(thank God I didn’t get a full rack) sucked. I don’t know if it was an off day or they were hitting the moonshine out back, but it tasted like burnt charcoal. Service wise — just from looking at me and seeing I was from out of town, she could barely pretend to tolerate me. I asked what was the best to eat in the place and you think I wanted her social security #. I guess they only care to talk to their 2nd cousins and an occasional farm animal if the mood strikes. Hospitality my ass. btw…Amazingly cold beer on tap. Pretty great actually. made up for the lady behind the counter. I wanted to ask her if she was still mad at Dorothy for killing her sister.
