This place is a disgrace to the State of MA and Hampden County. Who manages these miserable employees? Especially some of the older ones who have been there for a while. You can’t so much as ask them how they’re doing today, and they will tell you off. Absolutely horrible customer service. Our taxpayer dollars hard at work. At least can some of these old miserable jerks and bring in fresh people with a positive attitude. The job honestly isn’t very difficult, let’s be real.

Not bad for an RMV. The best advice I can give you, is do ALL of the paperwork you can IN ADVANCE and bring with you EVERYTHING YOU NEED (in terms of proof, ID, etc).
The first line is for «customer service». This individual basically traffics everyone to the appropriate spot and gives them their number in line. If you didn’t heed my advice above, you’ll be given your paperwork and told to come back in line when you’re done. Then you will be given a number.
Wait time: approximately one hour
Parking: horrendous. But I was lucky enough to get a spot inside the parking lot.
Staff: generally just trying to do their job. I’m sure they get a ton of ill-​prepared, confused and rude people coming in all day long. They were quite happy to see me, with my paperwork all filled out.
As a note, keep an eye on the clock. I got there before 4PM on a weekday, and had no issue applying for my MA license before they closed. However, one gentleman next to me ended up needing to take a test for his commercial license, but since it was too close to 5PM, they told him he’d need to come back another time.
Cost: converting my AZ drivers license to an MA one cost me $ 125! Holy cow! They do accept cash, check and credit card for these conversions. However, there are signs posted throughout the RMV that cash or check (no debit/​credit cards) are accepted for certain fines/​fees. So maybe check that out or come prepared.
I, unfortunately, will have to come back again to get my vehicle’s registration switched over. Nobody likes the RMV, but at least I got in, got out, and was none worse for the wear.

I think this RMV is great! I went there on a day they opened at 10, so the line was deceiving. It was out the door. Once I got in their was a rude older dmv worker. She must be of the old school rules, where nice is not permited. It wouldn’t have been a rmv experience if I didn’t have one rude worker.
The wait was not long at all. I am comparing this to DMV’s like Oklahoma City and Las Vegas. Theirs are literally hours!!! and hours!!!
So my measly one hour wait was nothing. Just come prepared and their really isn’t any need to complain. Just go to Okc or Las Vegas.
The clerk I dealt with was so friendly and helpful. She laughed at me because I came over prepared. Didn’t want to be turned away for my license. She also gave me a copy of the form I need to register my car. Then explained to me what I will need with it.
I could tell this clerk was having a hard day. Someone in management was giving her a hard time. She didn’t let that affect the way she handle all of the RMV’s customers.
Parking is not very good but just be patient.

First off I want to say that this branch of the DMV is HORRIBLE!!! The examiners are EXTREMELY rude and all they want to do is take your money and fuck up your day. Let me tell you exactly what happened today. I’m 17 and like any teen I’m super excited to get my license. I took my first driving test at my local driving school (Needham Driving School) and I failed. I failed because of parallel parking. $ 120 gone. I took it again a month later and got the same woman! I wasn’t surprised as she was assigned to my driving school. She was extremely rude and bitchy and remembered me from before. She told me to «hurry up» when I was checking for ongoing traffic to make sure it was safe. Wtf!!! I failed again and another $ 120 wasted.
Now I will tell you what happened today. My dad and I drove all the way from Needham to Springfield, which is about 1 hour and 30 min drive, to take my road test for the third time. I was confident in my driving and ready. We got there, I gave them my forms, and a man with a thick mustache (I don’t know his name) came over and said my dad (my sponsor) we suspended. Then he walked away. He didn’t even explain what was going on so I had to ask him and then he still didn’t. Finally he said my dad didn’t pay a fine from a year ago and therefore he couldn’t be my sponsor. This is untrue as my dad DID pay the fine and the DMV must have messed up.
No one from the DMV such as the examiners stepped up to be my sponsor. Pretty rude, right? He then said since my dad didn’t pay the fine he could get a warrant for his arrest. I started screaming as my dad was gonna be arrested for a fine!!! The man didn’t hesitate to tell me that I could be arrested for telling. Wtf man.
I started crying as we came all the way out here. The man also said that he was sending state troops to make sure we didn’t get in the car and leave. We went outside and my dad called AAA to tow us. They said since nothing was wrong with the car they wouldn’t get us. Then he called someone else and they said it would be $ 500! We went to the car and saw that there was an oil leak so we called AAA. Now I am in the tow truck writing this.
If you are thinking about going to take your road test at Springfield DMV DO NOT YOU ARE WASTING YOUR TIME. I would give this negative infinity stars if I could. The man was an asshole and didn’t apologize for the inconvenience. From what I have learned that the MA DMV is insanely ridiculous and we had mass residents have a right to better services. I am sending in a complaint to MA DMV and therefore challenging this authority.

Try to complete transactions online. If you have to go to RMV in person, expect rude employees who are not in rush to do business. The building is old and of a small size with few employees. This causes huge lines, you will wait minimum of 1hr up till 4 hr for your turn. Bring water and snacks because you will spend all day there. It gets stuffy inside because the hall is packed with people, and all seats are taken. Good luck finding a parking spot! People end up parking across the street at YMCA. This week I was driving by RMV, and people had to line up outside the building along the parking lot!!! You are better off going to Chicopee RMV which is tiny, but less people in line and employees are more helpful and pleasant.

The parking is not too bad. As you walk in, there is an information desk, the unfriendly lady will ask you what you need and provide you with information. What they don’t tell you is that you must fill out the form and get back in the information line again to get a number. The line for it is not long, but I walked around like an idiot as I tried to find the machine to get the number.
I’m converting my drivers license from California to Massachusetts. I’m a veteran, so I had to show her my DD214, proof of address, my unexpired California drivers license and military ID. The lady that helped me was extremely nice. Paid $ 100 to convert my license.
There’s a little girl crying and the guy at one of the desk is yelling at him because his daughter is crying and it’s unprofessional because it’s a place of business and people will make mistakes from a crying baby. The guy asked what he could do, bc it’s a child. I totally see both point of views… But as a mother I can see the fathers frustration.
The other thing that is annoying is like what the other reviewer wrote, that people end up waiting forever and go up there and not have all the paperwork. I’ve seen a few people get turned away after waiting for an hour. There was a man who got mad because he missed his number and tried to go up when it wasn’t his turn. Really? We have been sitting here, if you didn’t think it wasn’t important enough, then that’s on you. The place is pretty gross. I ended waiting 2 hours vice the 1:10 estimated on my ticket. Apparently it’s this crazy all the time.

Since they upgraded the system here things flow waaaaaay more smoothly. The only catch is that they need some sort of onsite information area that you can check out prior to waiting in line, to make sure you have everything you need. It seemed to me that half of the folks who were at the RMV didn’t have the proper paperwork, or they had to fill something else out before they could do business. So you wait in line for 10 mintues… then are told to fill something else out… then get back in line again. Makes no sense.
