I have visited the Gin Mill a few times and here are some observations. There are some things Gin Mill is doing well. Distinctive cocktails, a good beer and whisky selection, decent prices, and a lounge atmosphere. However, the darts, pool tables and touchtunes take a lot away from the lounge feeling. It would probably be better served with a well curated laid-back playlist. The Gin Mill restroom situation isn’t great. 2 is not enough men’s toilets for a busy Saturday night, and I have seen a few tense arguments in the line for the toilet.

The Gin Mill is a big, casual, and stylish place for an afterwork drink. It has a Rat Pack vibe with speakeasy-esque music and lots of relaxing leather furniture. They focus on spirits and cocktails, but they also have a wide variety of beer in bottles. Our table ordered a few different drinks from the bar — an old fashioned, a martini, and a gin fizz. All of them were excellent but I thought the old fashioned was especially good. The gin fizz was also a big hit and a really good choice if you like sweet cocktails. I almost always order beer when I go out for a happy hour, so it was great to change things up and try out the Gin Mill’s impressive bartending skills. Surprisingly, they do all this at amazing prices. The bartender was attentive and friendly. This is one of the best places I’ve found in downtown Springfield for some after-work hanging out or pre-dinner drinks. It’s a welcomed change of pace from the city’s standard sports bar scene.
