My sister and her husband rented a spot on Little Bear Creek Reservoir for their camper recently and had their first cookout today so I took my mom and drove over to the campsite. Bear Creek is divided up into four different campsites/boating areas, all created by TVA dams. There’s Bear Creek Reservoir which was impounded(dammed) in 1969 at over 670 acres. Little Bear Creek, where my sis/husband’s site is 1,260 acres of surface area and is stocked with large and smallmouth bass, channel cat and thread fin shad. Then there’s Upper Bear Reservoir at 1,859 acres and 205 acres of standing timber with lots more stocked fish including crappie. The last one is Cedar Creek with a surface of 4,200 acres. The lots for campers run from around $ 200-$ 250 and are by the month. The campsite opens from April-October so one can enjoy a week or a few days out in nature. There’s showers, water/electric hook-ups(got to take care of your own waste) and a little store at the entrance to buy bait or burger buns. Lester runs the store with his daughter and grandkids as well as the renting of the sites. I guess he’s like the caretaker. He showed me pictures of a fellow who caught a 40lb. flathead catfish on a cheap line. Yep, there’s monster fish in these waters. There’s also the Bear Creek Floatway one of the best canoe trips in Alabama. It’s a Class 1 course with exceptions like Factory Falls(Upper and Lower) which are a Class VI. Cabins are modern with all the amenities like cable, WiFi and kitchen appliances. They run $ 95/night in peak season and $ 85 off. For the kids and family there’s the Bear Creek Education Center where you can learn all sorts of outdoor activities like canoeing, night hikes, rappelling and spelunking. Yep, there’s a cave close by for those who aren’t claustrophobic. Peaceful and relaxing place out in nature with a touch of civilization added.
