The staff was super friendly. The singer greeted us and told us to be seated immediately. The server brought a bowl of water for our dog when she came to get our drink order. The manager went out of his way to come say hi. The food was incredible. Our server Jenna was very attentive. I think that was the best steak sandwich I have ever eaten. We will definitely be back.

We were walking down St. George in search of food after a horrible dinner experience elsewhere(Centro, and the review of that is posted on Unilocal as well) where I couldn’t even eat. We have walked past Taberna del Caballo a thousand times, but I guess I assumed it was just touristy. I couldn’t have been more wrong. From the moment we walked in we were treated wonderfully. The music and atmosphere were great, and our waiter was awesome. But best of all was the fabulous, reasonably priced food. We started with the Spanish Tapas platter. I ordered the small, and when it came out, it was so huge my husband was convinced there was a mistake and we’d received the large. We were thrilled when the check confirmed that it was the $ 10.00 version. A bargain for sure – chock-full of luscious Spanish salamis, apricots, figs, walnuts, artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers, excellent cheese with a balsamic reduction drizzle, and crispy baguette toasts. The cocktails were amazing, including my new favorite summer cocktail, the Old Spaniard. Aged rum, prosecco, mint, triple sec, and lime. So, so good! For dinner I had the MTR burger, described on the menu as «A ½ lb. Proprietary Blend of Brisket, Short Rib, and Chuck with Crispy Serrano Ham, Lettuce, Garlic Aioli, and Choice of Cheese on Toasted Brioche Bun». I have to say, I think they managed to beat Moxie Kitchen + Cocktails here, which until now has had my favorite burger. This thing was to die for. Juicy, garlicky, smoky, meaty… YUM. My husband wasn’t really hungry, but ordered the datil pepper barbecued pork flatbread. It was also completely delicious. Everything was great, and I can’t wait to go back.

Food was good, but the live entertainment was why we stayed. A waitress came out and performaned. It was awesome. This place is worth stopping for.

We came here as dog friendly and could not leave our dogs in hotel. We were greeted, seated, and right away someone brought the dogs a bowl of water. They had me then lol Good food, and located in historic area of St Augustine. Loved it.

This is a great lunch or light dinner spot hidden in the quarter. I’ve been here a couple of times now and the food was surprisingly tasty. The menu is diverse enough for the pickiest of eaters. The salads are big enough to share and the Cuban sandwich is pretty big, too. Both items are very flavorful and recommended. The St. George Salad is a tasty one with really yummy balsamic dressing. It was loaded with tons of veggies, cranberries and nuts – a solid salad with tons of flavors and textures going on for sure, but in a good way. The Cuban sandwich was delicious and had a lot more roasted pork inside it than I expected. It was also served with kettle chips. The fish tacos were an excellent choice and big enough for a nice meal. They give you two large tacos served with sauces that just work really well together. So good! And if you bring the kiddos, they have a special menu for them that won’t break the bank. They have an assortment of flatbreads and tapas from which to choose depending on your appetite. Kids’ pizza is pretty much flatbread pizza with a thin crust, sauce and cheese. No frills but pretty darn good if they don’t manage to finish it. Items are also served with potato chips. My last visit, I had a Bloody Mary and it was beautifully decorated with a large green olive, a nice chunk of chorizo and slice of sundried tomato speared on a toothpick complete with a salt and pepper rim. However, the actual drink was just OK and could have used a lot more vodka. Overall, this place is very understated, but the food is solid. The service is decent for being right on St. George St. and they have a good sized bar inside if you’re on a liquid lunch. Options to eat at the bar or inside dining areas(air conditioned with fans) or outside on their spacious deck is an added plus. However, the food is definitely worth the visit.

We got the Cuban, Shrimp & Grits, and the Gauche steak sandwich… Split them up and shared all three. Best meal I’ve had in a long time! The Shrimp & Grits was enough for two meals. It’s delicious!

Giving it a 4 stars cause the service is not the best but the food is so good! Try the shrimps and grits with chorizo… it’s just amazing! So so good and so was the spanish appetizer with cheeses and cold cuts

I find myself stopping by here whenever I’m in St Augustine. It’s rustic and romantic ambiance. They usually have Spanish music playing. Live music on the weekends. Picnic tables are the outside seating. I have tried a few items on their menu, and I have enjoyed all of them. However, they are a bit pricier than normal. I mainly just go here for the bar. The Sangria is divine.

I tried to give this place a fair shake because the service was way above par. But… I couldn’t recommend this place to anybody. We ordered steak sandwiches that came out with what I can only guess was London broil which was raw and impossible to eat. If that wasn’t bad enough two of the people in my party got food poisoning from the fish tacos. So needless to say I’d steer clear of this place.

Had to wait about 10 minutes to get seated so not bad. Sangria came right away. Cuban and fish tacos took less that five minutes. Everything was great

Excellent time. Shelly our waitress was awesome, super friendly and had good service. The food was also very good, had margarita pizza, the cuban and the fish taco, all delicious. The dark and stormy was so delicious, they make their own ginger beer and the Spanish coffee was the perfect after dinner drink. I can’t wait to come back!

Cool atmosphere! A very old cottage lit with oil lamps. We did have to use the flashlight function on our phones to read the menus, but we didn’t mind. We started with the meat and cheese platter, nicely appointed with roasted red peppers, nuts and olives as well. For dinner I had the Cuban sandwich. Best yet in St. Augustine. My husband had the shrimp and chorizo flatbread, it was quite excellent, says he. Sangria is touted as the best in town and I think they may be right! Bartender Chris was personable and charming. Our waiter was Chad. He was cheerful, pleasant and really on the ball. We appreciated his professionalism! We told him about our debacle with the $ 48 pitcher of sangria at the Gourmet Hut earlier in the week and he was agast that anyone would charge that for a pitcher as well! He mentioned amongst the local waiters, that place has a horrible reputation as waitstaff has to split their tips with the house. How awful! Anyway, we were very happy with our meal at Taberna de Caballo. Previous reviews mention slow service; we were delighted with ours and would return for the awesome sangria! Nice meal, great ambience!

More lighting please!!! I understand it’s an old tavern, but I can’t see the menu. The oil lamps are awesome looking but they don’t provide much light and are dangerous at a dining table(think of every time a glass full of a drink has spilled while having dinner) The food was good. I had the fish tacos and they were delicious. I also had the spinach dip, it’s a cold dip, normally spinach dip is hot. This was more like a spinach cole slaw, it was OK. If I were to come back I would just sit at the bar. The menu is very limited. For a Spanish/American place I would expect more seafood.

Awko Taco… had to seat myself and really wasn’t acknowledged for quite some time. When the waitress finally graced us with her presence, she didn’t bring a menu with her, so we had to ask for one. Ordered a rum punch and a Sir Francis Drake. The rum punch was awesome… I cannot say the same for the latter. Don’t know how the food is but I would stick to the speciality cocktails if I were you.

Food was good; a bit pricey, a bit small in portions, but good. However, the Dark and Stormy with house made ginger beer is the best I’ve ever had and made this place a must visit for us. Order one, you won’t regret it.

Food was good, over priced for portion size. Our waiter disappeared, waited for our check for 20 minutes after dining. Sangria was delicious. Live entertainer was fantastic, very talented guitarist and vocalist.

I have never eaten here; but the Sangria is very good, I always stop in when I am in St. Augustine to get a couple glasses, and I do not drink wine. tried this place about 5 years ago and it is a must stop when ever we brave the crowded St. George tourist area. The service is good bathrooms clean and always a good conservation in the small place that is historic itself.

The Sangria special stopped me but the chicken skewers in that delectable sauce will keep me coming back. A romantic setting in the bar is relaxed and quaint. I will definitely have to return and try more Tapas here and of course another Sangria with fresh fruit.

A Spanish inspired tapas bar. nice rustic décor and Spanish music as background. We sat outside and ordered two red house wines and a pan con tomate(flat breat with tomato sauce) which tasted a Lil bland and looked more like a tiny pizza. Our server took very long to take our order and the food(which was only one dish) took also a long time to arrive… but since we were in no rush .it didn’t bother us… the place has potential but the service needs to improve.

It was a rather severe disappointment to us when we saw that Taberna del Gallo( ) was no more. It was a favorite of ours, in its attempts to remain somewhat period-authentic with no artificial lighting or visible electrical items of any kind(I remember even the cash register was hidden behind a towel when not in use). Lit entirely by candlelight when the sun went down, we found the tiny little bar irresistible when we went out looking for a drink during our visits to St. Augustine. Taberna del Caballo is what became of Taberna del Gallo(I guess they didn’t want to change the name TOO much), and the miniscule bar has been opened up by removing the separation between it and the place next door. They are now a full restaurant, with the bar operating pretty much as it did previously except with quite a bit less effort going toward period authenticity. The additional rooms are naturally lit as before, with large, low openings in the walls for light and breeze. Decoration is sparse but the overall feeling is still cozy and enjoyable, with the two additional rooms holding four tables each. This offers a great feeling of privacy when you have the only occupied table in a room. There is a large outdoor area as well. We only stayed for a drink, since we hadn’t planned on food being served there. It’s a nice looking place, worth checking out as you’re passing through. We’ll probably check out the food next time. It’s lacking some of what made Taberna del Gallo so special to us, but this new incarnation is nice in its own right.
