I’d wanted for some time to stop in Wasted Sun after«liking» them on Facebook. Their space is beautiful and their location – despite horrible parking – is good for downtown Saint Augustine. However, their selection – at least of men’s surf-inspired clothing – is lacking, and what they have seems to follow an odd sort of identity crisis. They carry several less-common brands like Katin Custom Threads and Dunkle Volk but also Neff, a brand mostly popular with snowboarders and trendy high schoolers plus an awful lot of Quiksilver which is mainly. .. well. .. of the leading surfwear companies, it’s the one that is kind of seen least in-touch with contemporary surfers. The women’s selection seemed better and their selection of flip-flops, sunglasses, and watches was ok. However, they seemed to present themselves as a legit surf shop on one hand and cute little surf-inspired boutique on the other. About an hour later, in contrast, I was at The Surf Station with their racks of various boardshorts, tees piled high, employees talking about the fact CI forgot to send any seven-foot leashes, and the largest inventory of CI boards on the entire east coast. Now, that’s a freakin’ surf shop. I want to like Wasted Sun, but it seems like what concept a preppy high school girl who worked for a summer at Hollister would have of opening a surf shop, and not a dyed-in-the-wool core shop. I think it still could de well, but needs more inventory and perhaps to look over its selection of brands again.
