Great renovated 1928 movie theatre. A real gem and movies are only $ 4.00! Love this place.

A fine old theater. Far more comfortable than multiplexes. The Balcony is cool. If they are playing something I want to see, I make a point of going. Bottom line: The way movies should be shown. Btw there seems to be two listings for this theater on Unilocal

For me and my siblings, the Columbia Theater will always be the epitome of an «American theater». My grandmother who was born and raised in St Helens, OR grew up going to the movies here. Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, she saw them right here, just as my mother grew up seeing movies and going on dates here in the 50s and 60s. As soon as our parents would announce our next trip to America, we’d start dreaming about going back to the Columbia Theater, that stately old building with its deep red, velvety interior, and its quaint old ticket booth that looked just like in the movies. We would beg our parents to drop us off at the theater for a few hours so we could watch all the movies that would not be released for another three months in our own country. How we would brag to our friends once we got home. «Oh, Jurassic Park? Pff, we saw that months ago in America. Old news!» And then there were the concessions, nothing like we had at home. Sure our own theaters have beer, chips, and scoop-your-own-candy displays, but here in St. Helens they had these strange and wondrous sounding candies like chewy, chocolatey Milk Duds, or melt-in-your-mouth Junior Mints. In huge packages too, with a drink that was about 5 times the size of a drink in our country. We marveled at the entry prices. $ 4 for a movie? It was $ 12 back home, how could they be so cheap here? When I think of St Helens, OR, the first thing I remember is my grandmother’s yard with its apple trees, and grapes, and blueberries. The second thing is the Columbia Theater. It’s been many years now since I last set foot in here, but I’m sure it hasn’t changed a bit. Or at least, I’d like to think so.

We love this old theater! Lots of history, great old building, a balcony, great seating, good concessions and an awesome family package available through the local schools that makes it so affordable to go, it’s a steal of a deal. Another regular stop in our lives in St. Helens.

This is my favorite theatre! Yes, it is in a small town. Yes, it only shows a couple movies at a time and some not on opening night, BUT. .. the décor is antique and the rocking seats are comfortable and I just love it. Not to mention the tickets are cheaper than most without the icky atmosphere of some Belmont theatres that will remain unnamed. Columbia Theatre is exactly how I think all theatres should be. It is beautiful and I will go as often as possible.
