3587 feet up! Good flowing spring, but has a big mouse problem. Of the few shelters I’ve stayed at on the A.T. this one was my least favorite. First off the mice; they are terrible here. So bold that they don’t even bother hiding their nefarious activities from us humans. I got here mid evening(6:00ish) and set out some dog food for the pup and I took out my bag of trail mix and some Ramen Noodles to cook up. I go to gather some leaves near the hut and light a fire, I look back and I kid you not — there were 2 mice tearing up my trail mix and another in my dogs mouth. Apparently Rella was only watching out for her own food… nice going pup. I gathered up the food and hung it on a bear stand — I suggest you do the same or keep it packed tight in your pack. Second item on my list of unfortunate things — the area has been pretty much picked clean of grounded firewood and people have resorted to trying to break saplings leaving them twisted and broken. First off, fresh wood is a b! tch to try to get lit and second, if you’ve hiked up almost 3600 feet, why not walk those few extra yards down to the spring where there’s plenty more wood and dead fallen branches? And… third and most unfortunate of all — TRASH. I understand that as humans we will always leave traces of us behind. But there is no need to leave your dirty socks, propane fuel canisters or the dozens of candy wrappers behind. It’s simple, bring it in — pack it out… or burn it if it’s flammable. The 2 good things about this shelter: The spring flows fast and the fire pit is quite large.
