Didn’t actually take anything there to be repaired, but went to buy a couple vintage stereo amplifiers and preamps he had contacted me about — well, after getting some excuse that he «didn’t have any way of actually letting me listen to MUSIC through them» he took them to his work bench and generated some sine wave«tone» through them and into some cheap pair of speakers(this guy works on audio gear?!?) and said, «see, works perfect!» Well, I commented on the fact that one channel was virtually non-existent, and it was a problem with either the amp, preamp, or both, and he said, «oh, that’s just my speakers… one of them is weaker than the other»…hmmm, ok, sure. Then we hooked up the other amp, and we didn’t even get a «tone» out of it, until all of a sudden it started working… something wrong there, for sure, and this is the one he had repaired!!! Then I noticed a very bad electrical/electronic burning smell coming from one of the pieces of gear, and he had ANOTHER explanation, «oh, that’s just the new capacitors in the amplifier — they will smell like that!» but I continued my sniffing around and the odor was definitely coming from the PREAMP, and when I pointed this out to him he had YETONEMORE explanation for that — «oh, that’s probably just some dust burning off things inside the preamp that you’re smelling…» Yeah, right! Anyway, at this point I didn’t know what to say, at least anything civil, so I just said, «Sure, I’ll take them! Just let me go to the „bank“ and I’ll be back in twenty minutes!!!» …and went straight for the highway!!! Zounds!!!
