Excellent for birding. The endangered Red Cockaded Woodpecker is here. There are many areas in the refuge that say off limits, but check at HQ, they are the best places for migrants. They will give permission to enter areas. Nice visitors center with overlook of lake. Gift shop. Opportunities for volunteering appreciated. They have webcams of some nesting birds.

Located in Mississippi in the marshlands, this national wildlife refuge is entered through a paved road that passes by a church, then into a single two-lane road that periodically has paths off of it for walking/hiking and boat release points. Bikers are on the road, and plenty of fishermen after March 1st line the banks and also the elevated walkways they have also created for tourists and visitors. A visitors center exists, but we didn’t go into it. If you pass through here in the summer, you can find alligators resting on the banks. Careful! Fishermen say they’ve caught bass, crappie, and sunfish here. Plenty of smaller fish but some 1 – 2 lbs specimens early in the day, too.
