I was back in my hometown of Starkville, Mississippi, for the weekend, and my mom took me to this superyelpworthy place. A family friend told her about it, and she thought that I would like it. I did. Now, I know that reasons may be rare for visiting Starkville, but if you happen to be in any of the following categories: a resident who doesn’t yet know about this place, attending a wedding, visiting Mississippi State University, or on campus for watching some SEC related sport, then visit the Fish Shack #2 for an authentic Southern fried experience. It’s located along Old West Point Road about 15 minutes outside of town. When you see a giant flashing sign that says«FOOD,» you know you’ve found it. Lots of places claim to be ‘shacks’ for marketing purposes. This place truly qualifies for shack status. As in, it looks dangerous to stay here during a tornado. As in, if there are building codes that it needs to live up to, it probably doesn’t. As in, central air conditioning is out of the question. Fried is the key word here. The signature dish is fried catfish. Other things on the menu include a fried chitterlings plate, snout, hamburgers, pretty much anything else fried, and the quintessential Southern side of fried green tomatoes. So the story goes(thanks to our friend Flora), the owner of this shack is the daughter of the owner of the Fish Shack #1, which is located in nearby West Point, MS. Fish shack #2 has been in business for fifteen years — and certainly can’t survive on location(middle of nowhere, literally) but strong word of mouth within the community. There’s a total of three tiny tables in the shack, and the main décor is a framed picture of a magnolia and a map of Mississippi, with a star proudly placed on the location of the shack. While waiting for our food, I rocked out to a song called«Motown Love.» Hours vary by day, so call ahead if you’re ready to have honest, incredibly delicious food and a lil’ adventure off the beaten path.
