Went to this restaurant and had to get up and leave. Why you ask… Well, we came in and were seated, got our drinks and chips with salsa. Then, we waited… and waited… and waited. Two other groups of people came in, got the same, but then got their orders taken. There we were waiting for our waitress to stop seating people and talking to family to take our order. So, we got up and left. On the way out, I let our waitress know we were leaving and why. I got a simple«sorry.» I don’t hold high standards for restaurants in small towns and can tolerate some setbacks, but I’ve had the same experience at this restaurant multiple times before and just put up with it. If the wait staff was not so interested in talking to family and watching Telemundo, they would have kept my business, but now they’ve lost it forever. If you have unlimited time to wait and don’t feel like being taken advantage of by people who can hardly speak english, stop on in. They’d love to take advantage of you.

Visited: August 8th, 2011 My boyfriend and I went to this restaurant and met up with his other brother Dusty and his family after we went to the zoo with his brother Michael and his kids. From what I heard from my boyfriend, his dad Steve, and Michael— Dusty and his family are regulars at this restaurant. Knowing that Staunton, Mt. Olive, and other neighboring areas are small cities, I wasn’t expecting there to be many Mexican restaurants, and of good quality. Living in San Diego, I’ve been exposed to many kinds of foods from cultures around the world. One that is prevalent in San Diego is Mexican food, and I absolutely love Mexican food as much as I love Filipino food(I’m half Filipino). So I tried to keep an open mind as my boyfriend and I were on our way to Las Cabanas. Anyway, we went to the restaurant expecting that Dusty and his family were going to already be there. When we arrived, they were running late. So we got a table for all of us. When I walked inside, I thought the place had nice décor with a decent sized bar. We were seated shortly and we told our server that we were waiting for four more people. As we waited, our server brought us tortilla chips and salsa. The tortilla chips were not too bad, the salsa was so-so. Dusty and his family arrived soon after, and my boyfriend introduced me to his brother Dusty and his family. Dusty asked us if we had the chips with the cheese sauce and guacamole. We said no, and Dusty asked the server if she could bring us some. I thought the cheese sauce and the guac were delicious, far more tastier than the salsa. I ordered the two beef tacos combo, my boyfriend ordered the cheese enchiladas combo, Dusty & Tracy both ordered Quesadilla combos, and the kids got cheese pizzas(they are picky eaters and this establishment happens to have cheese pizzas and other items for kids). We chatted as we were waiting for our food and sporadically as we ate. When I looked at the tacos, they looked nothing like the ones I’ve seen in Mexican restaurants in San Diego. They looked like tacos from Taco Bell or a box kit. However, the look of the tacos didn’t affect my judgment on how they were going to taste. The tacos were ok; nothing too special about them. The rice and beans were pretty tasty though. :) My boyfriend felt the same way about his enchiladas. We both agreed that are meals were ok given the fact that there very few Mexican restaurants within 20 miles. But we both enjoyed the cheese and guac dips over the salsa very much. Whenever I do go back to Mt. Olive or Staunton, I don’t think I would have a desire to go to Las Cabanas.

Always a nice stop on the road to Chicago. This is such a quaint and lovely Tex-Mex restaurant, a hiccup off the olé 55′. I’ve been here twice and was never disappointed by the service or quality of food. The menu is extensive and the place has a roadhouse feel to it located in the outskirts of town with pastures as far as the eye can see. But if you got to travel a long distance, give this place a whirl! It fills ya up good! The only Mexican place for miles around!
