Algonkian Regional Park & Golf Course

I’ve golfed this course twice now and wanted to provide a review. The first time I golfed here I brought my nephew. This was his first experience with golfing on an actual course. They offer cart rentals and you can opt for 9 or 18 holes. We chose 9 holes. One point to note is that there is a shortcut route that is deceiving, because if you take that route, then you are not golfing your entire 9 or 18 holes. The course is easy. There appears to be many regulars who come out during the day. They located right off route 7, so it is easy to find. The prices are not as cheap as a county course. If you are in the area, it’s a good place to visit.

Review for minigolf only: This course has potential but isn’t well maintained at all. The course seems to be easier than some others and some of the holes are fun but this place seems like it hasn’t been cleaned in at least 6 months. There is either dirt or mold on lots of the astroturf and there were lots of sticks and leaves all over the course. Yeah they are «natural obstacles» but someone cleaning the place every once in a while would be an improvement. Also, they were out of scorecards which was pretty lame but we used our phone to keep score instead so no big deal.
The staff is very friendly and this wouldn’t be a bad course if they’d clean it up a little.

The golf course kills it… It’s an easy course and extremely forgiving on most holes. Well maintained and the pace of play is better here than anywhere else, despite the hackjobs (including myself) that frequent it. For a public course at a fair price, it doesn;t get much better.
The only negative I have is the «sand» traps. Most of the traps are filled with what appears to be infield dirt from a baseball field. It’s usually rock hard, you can walk on it and not leave a footprint. Some traps actually have sand, but most are just hard dirt. I really don’t mind the dirt traps, because it gives me a reason to pick my ball up and place it out of the trap, but that’s just me.

Cool course; it had rained a lot before we went so it wasn’t mowed which meant we lot a lot of balls. All in all I liked the course an will go back when the weather is nicer and update my review.

Worked at the golf course for about 5 years now and I have always enjoyed working there and being there.

Great public golf course. A good beginner course thats well kept with a couple long par 4s challenging enough for most. The pace was great finishing our round in 3.5 hours. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Would definitely play there again.

Perfect for a great look at the Potomac river, there is a nice seating area and a large meadow and gravel parking lot to play and park in. It’s so close, I love to walk along the river when the weather is nice. No amenities so be prepared, it’s just a nice outdoor space. Also a great place to see tons of deer, so keep your eyes peeled and drive slowly!
Can’t comment on the pool or golf course which is also included in the park.

Algonkian is great, wonderful golf course, beautiful river front cottages, a great volcano themed waterpark and much more! Our family has stayed at the cottages and used all of the amenities. It is an entire vacation all at one site. In addition to these items, you can launch a boat and explore the Potomac, and you can hike down river along the Potomac Heritage Trail all the way to Great Falls. A remarkable place!

Let me save you some trouble by telling you to NOT COME HERE!!! If you want to get rude «service» (if you can call it that) and have the most moronic rules ever, then this is the golf course for you. My friend and I arrived here and the first problem was there was no signs or directions on how to get to the pro shop. We went to the most obvious entrance and found out it was the rear. Once we get to the shop a worker angrily forced us outside to talk with the «starter» for sign up. This guy was terrible. He was rude, unfriendly, and non-​negotiating. He said that we need to go back to the pro shop!!! There was no coordination between workers and tons of chaos as well as morons. Then this worker dude yelled at us pretty much and insisted that the each of us have our own set of clubs. We were just fine with one set and didn’t want to shell out extra cash on the spot just to appease this old dude who sucks for not being nice about things and not compromising. After getting yelled at some more, we just left. Terrible rules and rudeness caused us to leave without even golfing. Stay away from this wasteland.

This park is along the Potomac River. You can park near the boat ramp and see the river from your car. Parking is free. Leave your car behind and use the ramp to put your personal water vessel in the river or go for a hike along the river. Dogs are allowed too. Good spot for spotting birds and other wildlife. Be care on the drive in as there are many deer. They are usually hanging out on the golf course though. If you golf here you are hanging with the deer. They have cabins for rent in one area that is along the Potomac River. There are also picnic areas that are often full of big parties.

Algonkian Regional Park located along the Potomac River in Northern Virginia has much to offer such as a great 18 hole golf course. No metal spikes allowed. Pull and electric golf carts are for rent. If that sounds too much for you then head over to the mini golf course next to the water park, Volcano Island waterpark. If you get hungry or thirsty both the golf course and the water park does have a café full of goodies. Also on site is picnic shelters and hiking trails, fishing, boat ramp, a meeting center and cottage rentals.

5 star public course. Great course for every handicap. Well kept greens, carts are quiet, friendly staff. I jst love everything about this course!

LOVE this track. Mostly what you see is what you get, tree lined, and solid overall. In great shape for the most part too. Greens are never fast, but never in bad shape. Just a fun track that is very walkable (a big plus in my book). Putting and chipping green are great for practicing, but the range mats and balls are mediocre.
One of the people who work in the clubhouse is pretty rude though. She is older and berated me for using a GolfNow discount (sort of like a Groupon). She thought it was for walk-​ons only. But when I showed her the note that said to call in, she just huffed and sent me on my way. I’ve been here a dozen times and she’s never been in a great mood. Everyone else, however, has been wonderful to interact with. Marshals included.

Played golf on thurs. Mother nature was not terribly rough on the course this winter. With winter rates in effect. .. well worth it!

The hiking trails are pretty neat. We did a 30+ mile hike along the potomac starting at the Algonkian Sportsplex. The green trail connects to Great Falls Park at around the 12 mile mark and the potomac will always be on your left making for some beautiful scenery. The hike is pretty nice as there are tons challenging hills to keep your heart rate up.

We really loved a lot of things about Algonkian (we had our wedding there in May). The park is gorgeous, the main room that comes with the «event center» rental is spacious (plus you get two bonus rooms), there are wonderful on-​site cottages for guests to stay in, and it’s close to Dulles for out of town guests. The picnic shelters also offer a very affordable rehearsal dinner venue.
But the best thing for us was working with the event coordinator (Lawan), who was just amazing. She was very detail-​oriented, super calm, and really good at her job. We really relied on her a lot to keep things running smoothly and she made all the difference in the world
The cottages were great both b/​c they were cheaper than hotels (if they’re mostly full) and it gave us a chance to spend more time with our guests. The free waterpark and mini-​golf was a bonus too.
The only downsides are that it is pricier than we would have liked (certainly not more expensive than other comparable venues, but still not cheap), and the in-​house caterer was very disorganized. They were very friendly and accommodating, but couldn’t keep track of things like sending us a contract, keeping track of payments we’d sent, etc. Dealing with Blue Heron (the caterer) was definitely one of the more stressful aspects of the wedding. They did mean really well and we really appreciated them putting in extra effort to make our wedding as «green» as possible, but getting the administrative details taken care of was like pulling teeth. However, in the end the event was wonderful.

It’s a muni, what do you expect? Course does not have much undulation, so it’s easy to walk. Layout is decent, nothing outstanding. I played this course in early April 2011 and the fairways were too soft with casual/​standing water in most the fairways… obviously a drainage problem. Other than that, the course was in acceptable condition. Usually play Algonkian a couple times a summer…

Great beginner golf course. The membership is unbeatable. I started last year with the silver member walking for something like 1200/​year. Got to play 9holes of golf ever day after work and only had to pay for food; which their burgers are awesome (think their very fatty which gives them their taste).
Range is nice and open and people tend to go walking at the very end of it. So if you can drive it 275+ you’ll put a nice scare in to them.
Course if flat and most holes are open. You’ll rarely lose a ball unless you’re hacking it all over the course. Trees lining the course are not thick so you’ll usually be able to find and make a reasonably good shot toward the green.
Bunkers kind of suck cause there is no drainage, but the management is supposidly working to find room in their budget to reconstruct them.
Oh and last but not least, the membership gives you free access to Brambleton and Pohick Bay. So three courses for $ 1200 M-​Fri walking per year. AMAZING!

Service is HORRIBLE!
I have called may be 8 times to inquire about cottage rentals. The person is never at her desk and she hardly returns a phone call when a message is left.
How ever, I was «lucky» to receive a call back from her today and she is awfully rude!
Some people working with government entities just take their job for granted.
If you want to deal with this park, expect poor service.

My company had a meeting at the Algonkian Meeting and Events Center in the park. Great location for an offsite kind of meeting/​workshop that’s not too far outside Washington. The events center is in the same building as the Golf Pro Shop. The main conference room has a view of the golf course. There are two other smaller conference rooms and restrooms in the building. Food is done by the in-​house caterer and it was excellent. The event center staff were great to work with. Prices were reasonable too.
