Used to be awesome, I took my kids at least once week. I’d meet friends for lunch there all the time. Now it’s just loud and awful. Stinks really, the Depot was a special part of KI.

I’ve been hearing about this place for years. A good friend once claimed that the best crab cake he ever had was in, of all places, a gas station convenience store on Kent Island. And so I’ve been enjoying the crab cakes here for years. Not sure if the best ever, but very near the top in any case. This morning I tried the sausage egg and cheese on english muffin. Absolutely outstanding – a huge sandwich, freshly made, with tons of sausage. Perhaps the best breakfast sandwich I’ve had in years. The locals know this place and keep it busy – worth a trip for anyone in the area.

Took a day trip over to Baltimore with a friend who passes through that way once a month or so, and as we passed through on the way over, she told me to memorize the exit for this place because I’d want to come back often. So on the way back, we stopped in so she could demonstrate why. From the outside, it doesn’t look like much. Gas station/convenience store type place. Hell, from the inside, it still doesn’t look like much. Until you get to the bakery case. Chock full of so much yumminess! Smith Island cake, tiramisu, cheesecake, Key Lime pie, I can’t even remember what else because I’d been awake for almost 30 hours straight by the time we went in there. Most were served in 6″ x 6″ deli boxes, like what you’d get a sandwich to go in, and in big enough portions that you could probably split them four ways between diet cheating ladies, or just a single serving for a big dude or someone who had a big sweet tooth and didn’t give a care about dieting. I bought a tiramisu to go and ate the whole thing in one fell swoop for breakfast the next day, which was probably excessive. And in the next case over, also more lunch-type foods like chicken salad, which the same friend also swore by. We were the only ones in there other than the guy behind the counter, which might have explained why he seemed to be slightly loopy with boredom. Not quite funny, just sort of overly familiar and flirtatious, but not disrespectful enough to be offensive. Just sort of… odd. And said friend doesn’t pass through regularly enough to be a «regular», no sign that the flirtation was related to that, so I’m guessing that was just his personality? I almost told him we were each old enough to be his mother, but I was too tired to be witty by that point. Unlike my friend, I’m not normally the type to go out of the way for baked goods, no matter how good, but I will certainly remember this place for if I’m ever passing through with a sweet tooth.

Great little hidden gem on the island. You wouldn’t think food this good can come out of «gas station»

All kinds of freshly made gourmet foods and bakery goods. A real find! Great place to stop for gas on the way to Ocean City.
