Free improv classes in LA? With great teachers and teams that compete against iO West and UCB? Yes! Have fun and grow as an actor and a person by getting over fear of public speaking, fear of ridicule, by being quicker on your feet, improving your listening skills and much more. Doing improv has helped me so much, I can’t speak highly enough about it! UPDATE: Monkey Butler will soon be renamed Mosaic Comedy.

Definitely worth checking out. All their classes are free which is nice. You just can’t swear or do anything profane. Which is cool but I have a potty mouth so… Their shows are super cheap to see too so that’s an additional bonus! But yeah check it out! Cool peeps.

I love going to Monkey Butler classes every Monday evening in Hollywood. It is a chance to learn improv in a church environment for free. It naturally draws a few sketchy people since it is free and it is on Hollywood boulevard, but if you don’t mind that element, I would recommend it to anyone that wants to try improv.

These classes are great for people who want to try improv but are either afraid to or don’t want to commit to an 8 week long class or $! The shows I’ve participated in have ALWAYS been great fun — so if you’re on the fence about performing, JUSTDOIT — it’ll be way more fun than you think! I’m not religious, so I have to mention there is often a prayer time at the end. We are not required to participate or stick around if it makes us feel uncomfortable. I’ve taken classes at Second City, UCB and Groundlings — I would say that what is taught is fairly similar-ish to what I would learn at UCB! Plus, you can’t beat the price of FREE :)

Great place to do improv. It was my first time doing improv so I’m no expert but they had 3 levels 1 for beginners 1 for novices and 1 for experts(names of the levels may be different but you get the point). I learned a lot and the best part is I didn’t have to pay a dime!!! That’s right it’s FREE!!!

This is GREAT improv training to keep your skills sharp, and you learn ALLTHESAME games and techniques here as you would at any of the top four improv schools FORFREE. So of course this is going to be a 5 star review. If you need an improv class to put on your resume for commercial work, go to UCB, Second City, IO West, or Groundlings. But if you want to keep your skills sharp or even supplement your education at those other places, check Monkey Butler out.

If you like Comedy Improv — Monkey Butler Comedy is the name for you. It’s classes are free– I repeat FREE. Just go to the website and look where the level one class is and then show up. It’s really just that easy. If they aren’t there it’s because of a conflict and they’ll be up the next week try again. Then be sure to get yourself on the email list and you’ll forever know when there is a scheduling issue. Plus you’ll find out about their shows etc etc etc. Sadly Monkey Butler is no more. It was shut down in the summer of 2014.

«Alice: Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here? The Cat: That depends a good deal on where you want to get to Alice: I don’t much care where. The Cat: Then it doesn’t much matter which way you go.» Improv is such an amazing outlet for actors to express their wittiness and creativity. High hat comedy, supportive and talented community. I had the opportunity of meeting some really awesome people, and to get my feet wet in a classroom environment for the low cost of zero dollars. I’m hooked.

I love Monkey Butler. Where else can get free top of the line imrov classes? Anyone that has not checked out Monkey Butler is missing out on a rare find. Sometimes they offer special workshops(which are also free) ranging from Musical Improv, One woman show, etc. I can’t say enough about these guys. They are out there making an amazing contribution to the community.

I’ve seen a lot of improv and Monkey Butler is AMAZING ! If you want to see quality and FUNNY improv, no need to look further. Clean improv to bring the kids or your parents. Perfect for a first date or even second.

If you’re looking for great improv training at a great rate, Monkey Butler is the place to go. And when I say a great rate, I mean the best rate: FREE. The reason it’s free is because it’s run like a non-profit and the people who run it just love performing improv and helping others find a great community to learn and do improv. For the longest time I put off training because of how expensive classes are at Groundlings, UCB, IO etc. But playing with MB has given me an opportunity to keep practiced and truly grow. Plus, now they have opportunities to get involved in other forms of comedy such as online videos, stand-up and even special guest instructors from the voice over industry. Basically, there’s no excuse not to check it out.

Improv lessons taught by experienced improvisors + engaging class environment + great experiences for actors(or non-actors) + Free + superb community + special speakers = good times. Simple math! I’d be sitting in my room talking to myself if it wasn’t for Monkey Butler! It also gets rid of that icky buildup, saves money, and washes my car! Amazing. =)

I have been doing improv since I was 15, but it wasn’t until I got involved with Monkey Butlers FREE improv classes I really started to GETIT. Improv is so much fun. I’m a writer and an actor, and improv really allows me to work both muscles. We have several teachers for our different levels(foundations, long form, and intensive) and all the teachers are great! They’ve all studied at the different theaters in LA, so they’ve got the best from all the different styles from Groundlings, Upright Citizens Brigade, ImprovOlympic, and Comedy Sportz. David(the artistic director and my teacher) has studied everywhere in LA, and he is a brilliant, hilarious improviser. But on top of his phenomenal improvisational skills are his instructional skills. He is very good at communicating the basic rules and principles as well as the more advanced and complex forms. Unlike a lot of instructors who just tell you what you’re doing wrong, David focuses on what you’re doing well and he helps you to build upon that. I highly recommend his class. Plus, you can’t beat his prices. With other improv theaters costing upwards of four and five hundred dollars, David’s class is an amazing bargain. Check it out! Did I mention that the classes are FREE!!!
