Gwaltney’s Store(GS) is a quaint country store on Route 10 in the Chuckatuck area of Suffolk. Like many other places around here, I’ve driven by but never stopped. It was the holiday decorations on the building that really caught my eye today, and I decided to check it out. GS has a long history here in Suffolk; starting back in the early 1900s, three generations of Gwaltneys have owned this store. Last year, the current owner Kent Gwaltney, renovated the building, and GS was named a historic site by Preservation Virginia. GS first opened all those years ago as a General Store, and sold household staples. Today, GS sells unique items and crafts: clothes, toys, candy, licensed sports paraphernalia, Carhartt-brand outerwear, country-themed items, and holiday decorations during the season. Walking inside the store, the interior is small and full of many different items. It was cramped, but tidy and clean; I would recommend that you don’t come in with a stroller. The older lady who welcomed me was friendly and happy to help; we chatted a bit while I shopped. Their store is beautiful on the inside, and their items are well-made. We’re not talking about Wal-Mart here, people! Their prices seemed fair to me, especially knowing they are good quality and a local business. GS has a warm, intimate feel inside, and the Christmas tree was a nice touch. I will definitely come back when I’m in need a gift for that special someone, or maybe to purchase some of that delicious pumpkin butter I spotted. I guarantee you will be able to find something you want at GS.
