Very clean and welcoming. Good seating. Brisket, shredded chicken and beef, banana pudding, and macaroni are good. Rolls/buns, fries, and sauces are great. Prices are acceptable. I’ll be a returning customer!

First time eating here. We ordered the brisket platter and bbq sandwich. The platters came with 2 healthy portions of sides of your choice. We opted for fries and slaw. Fries were obviously handful and were very good. Slaw was excellent with just a touch of onion which was a nice touch. The platters also came with hush puppies which didn’t have much flavor and a huge roll. You can definitely smell the cookers in the air but wasn’t unpleasant. Will definitely eat there again, just sorry I missed the banana pudding.

Nice spot. Relatively small, but average size for a BBQ joint. Had the burnt ends and the what I believe they called smoke bombs(Fried mac and cheese/bacon balls) Good stuff. All six of us in the party were plenty happy with both food and service(well, except our niece, who didn’t eat because… i don’t know… she’s weird, I guess. How the hell do you not eat while five people are devouring BBQ right in front of you?) Picked up a bottle of sauce to take home, haven’t used it yet… but will soon :)

Great food at a very good price. I took my wife and three kids there to eat for the first time and we all ate some delicious BBQ without breaking the bank. I like to support small businesses and veteran own businesses and with this restaurant, you support both. We will definitely return soon.

The pulled chicken plate had a great smokey flavor and the bacon and burbon sauce paired nicely with it! All of the sauces tasted good but this one was my favorite. The roll served with the meal was divine. This is how bread is supposed to be made! I also ordered the coleslaw, hush puppies, and french fries. I enjoyed them all, especially the coleslaw… great flavor and not watered down. The owner and waitress ensured we were taken care of. They were polite and courteous. Unfortunately another patron thought it was necessary to be down right nasty to the waitress and cause a scene. It was nice to see the owner step in and support his staff and not throw them under the bus, on top of not allowing the situation to escalate. To me those are the things that count in running a good business. Will return again!

Really good atmosphere. Old smokey brick building. My service was good. Portions were good for the price. I got the sampler. All the meats were flavorful. The brisket was a bit dry though. Chicken and pork were awesome. The original sauce was good. The bourbon and bacon sauce was amazing. Carolina vinegar sauce was very basic and unsophisticated. Straight vinegar and red pepper. Now I mixed it with the bourbon sauce and had an orgasm in my mouth. I was passing through and tried this place out. Neat little hole in the wall. Way to go guys!!!

Stopped in here while i was traveling with work. I was excited to try something local. I was highly disappointed at when I received my food. The pulled pork was white as turkey, no smoke flavor nor pinkness from the char. The texture of the meat was firm. Hush puppies were dry as well. The brisket baked beans were room temperature. I can firmly say this will be my first and last experience.

I met the owner by buying his BBQ sauces at the local Farmers Market. My family really loves«That good BBQ Sauce». It was there we found out they were opening a reatraunt and decided we had to try it when they opened. My wife and I went during the day around 1pm on the weekend, we walked up and were very pleased with how good it smelt outside. When we walked in we were greeted with a welcoming but we’re still a little confused to order(guess we should have looked at the sign hanging from the celing) we walked up go the register and placed our orders. We brought our appetite and wanted to try it all. I ordered the BBQ platter with fries, baked beans, and hush puppies. The BBQ was piled up high with coleslaw and a bun, it was delicious, the baked beans has brisket in them and were very good with good flavor, and yes the fries were great too, unfortunately the hush puppies needed some work. My wife ordered the juicy brisket platter with potato salad and we both thought it was great and it had a very thick smoke ring. The potato salad was on point as well. I also enjoyed a draft Smartmouth with my dinner. Just before we finished the owner came over and talked to us for a while and thanked us for coming in. We told him we would definetely be back and we would spread the word.

We took the family here after church the other day to give this new restaurant a shot and we are, overall, very pleased. We ordered the kids pulled chicken sandwiches, a regular pulled chicken sandwich, & a pulled pork sandwich. We’ll ignore my 2 year old’s opinion. He preferred the cheese doodle things over anything else. However, our 5 year old ate his chicken & his brother’s chicken, so we’ll call that a positive review by itself. The BBQ sauce selection was awesome. I didn’t try them all because I don’t like all BBQ styles. The Memphis style, Hot, and the Bacon one were our favorites. I would love to see a good South Carolina mustard-based BBQ sauce make it to the table(there was a good mustard but not a mustard BBQ like I love). Based on the quality of the other sauces, I believe the sauce master would do a great job. I had the pulled chicken meal. The chicken was incredibly moist. Incredibly. Fantastic job. Without BBQ sauce, the chicken didn’t have a whole lot of flavor but I went there for the sloppy BBQ, not a dry rub, so I am okay with this. Chris had the pulled pork and he loved it. It was very juicy and he said it was well-seasoned without the sauce. The fries we had were obviously made in-house and really good as were the baked beans The owner/chef/BBQ master checked on us while we were eating & offered our boys a taste of the banana pudding(they refused — the 2 year old is ornery & the 5 year old has special dietary requirements). I highly recommend giving this place a chance, if you haven’t yet. We will definitely go back.

I go here for lunch sometimes and get the special, it is a great BBQ place. The portions are generous and all the sauces are delicious. Defintley the best BBQ in downtown Suffolk. The brisket is really good!

I can hear the conversation with a friend now: Me: «Hey Friend, I had some good BBQ today/» Friend: «Really, where?» Me: «That Good BBQ place in Suffolk» Friend: «What Good BBQ place in Suffolk?» Me: «That Good BBQ place in Suffolk» Friend: «But which Good BBQ place in Suffolk?» Me: «That Good BBQ place in Suffolk, the one that just opened on West Washington Street.» Friend: «Oh, so what’s the name of that good BBQ place?“Me: «That Good BBQ» Friend: «I know, BUTWHICHGOODBBQ» Any way, today my business partner and fellow barbeque judge drove out to downtown Suffolk. In a stand alone building on West Washington stands«That Good BBQ». The building is freshly renovated. The interior is spartan — fresh paint with a few pork related signs and framed items, a mounted chef’s jacket from the Culinary Arts School, and some old license plates. I wasn’t sure at first if we were to sit down and order or do so in what looked to be a designated line in front of the two people in the open kitchen area. We were warmly greeted and told there’s a menu on the wall or one printed he motioned to near his station. We both decided quickly on a two-meat sampler. Both of us got pulled pork and brisket. We were offered«lean» or «juicy», we both chose«juicy». Fat is flavor. I got slaw and a corn bread roll; Richard got baked beans. The order taking method and shorthand needs some improvement — they’ve only been open«a month and a week» according the young man taking our order so give it some time. The dining area has about 10 – 12 dark wood tables and chairs, mostly 2 tops. Each table has a roll of paper towels and 5 sauces: Spicy Mustard, Bourbon and Bacon, Original, Hot and Carolina Vinegar. More on these later. Our food arrived maybe 10 minutes after we ordered. At first glance, the amount of meat was a bit smaller than expected. The sides were piled high and we each received 5 hush puppies with our meal. The smoke aroma was mouthwatering and I couldn’t wait to dig in. I always try the meats naked first. The pulled pork had a good smoke flavor and there was some nice bark included. It had a good pork flavor but could have used some seasoning. The brisket was tender and i guess the«juicy» part was the thin fat along some of the edge. It had a nice crunchy bark and good beef flavor. Like the pulled pork, a good smoke flavor but also could have used some seasoning. Salt would have helped elevate it. Based on the amount of sauce in each bottle, one would guess the Bourbon and Bacon was the«crowd favorite». It was a sweet, Kansas City style sauce with a hint of bourbon and bacon. Really good. No too think, not too thin. Went well with both the pork and brisket. The original seemed to be the same base as the bourbon and bacon, also very good. The«Hot» had a nice kick but not overpowering. The Carolina Vinegar was very good and definitely elevated the pork. I wasn’t a fan of the Spicy Mustard sauce. It was good, but I didn’t think it paired well with the meats. My slaw was piled high. For me, the addition of the raw onion overpowered the fine chopped cabbage and carrot. It had a nice hint of sweet that went well with the pork. The hush puppies were perfectly cooked but I prefer a sweeter corn batter. These were more on the savory side, maybe a little bland, and a bit over slated. The corn bread roll was a nice yeast roll with with some corn meal. Delicious, but I really wanted a stick of butter to slather on it. The amount of meat served turned out to be just the right amount. I was happily full. I rated this a 4-Star experience because they did cook everything very well. The meats do need some«love» and a much heavier rub while smoking. I’m hoping the word gets out, they improve their order taking procedure, and maybe kick things up a notch with some additional spices. If you go out, let me know how you like That Good BBQ place. Which one? That Good BBQ place in Suffolk, you know the one on West Washington Street…

Our story begins at the local Farmers Market earlier this year. I spotted a table covered with«That Good BBQ Sauce» and bought a bottle to take home. Not long after, I found out that the owner, Barry Day, was going to open a restaurant called That Good BBQ(TGB). Skipping ahead, I recently stopped by to check them out. Barry and his wife are both retired from the military, and both are running the place. When I arrived, they were the only two I saw working at TGB. The interior changed a bit from Cosmic Pizza, and I really liked what TGB have done to it. It has a warm, welcoming feeling when you walk in the door; it’s not fancy, but I felt comfortable while I waited for my food. According to their website, they make everything homemade – even their mayo. Their bread is homemade except for the Texas Toast, and their meat is smoked for 16 hours. I was ready to eat! I wanted to order an array of items off their menu so that I could get a good idea of what their food was like. I went with their«All of ‘Em» Sampler, which comes with brisket, pork and pulled beer can chicken – an addition to a side and hush puppies. I got the beans, and also ordered the potato salad, coleslaw, and cornbread buns. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed with the meats. The pork and brisket was just okay; moist and tender, but they were lacking in flavor and needed the sauce badly(Bourbon and Bacon BBQ Sauce is pretty damn tasty). The chicken was my favorite. The sides were decent – the beans were my favorite(sweet and tangy – the way I like ‘em) and the slaw and potato salad were just okay. The hushpuppies, however, were not great. The only thing I tasted was fried dough – no taste of cornmeal at all. My youngest loved them though so take your pick. I did like their cornbread buns, which is something I’ve never heard of before. I’m always rooting for new local businesses and TGB had fantastic service. From the moment I walked in there, until they rang up my bill, I felt like they truly wanted my business and thanked me. Because of that, it’s always difficult to write a review when the food isn’t stellar, and I really want to give them 5 stars. With that, I am giving them 3 stars for the excellent service, points for all homemade food, and okay BBQ. I will definitely go back and try again.

I know the meats are smoked but where is the flavor!!! And I’m not talking about BBQ sauce!!! Hush puppies need some love as well !!! They taste like fried flour and baking soda! How did they even place in any competition!!! I’ve had good BBQ and this is not it! However they do use good bread for their sandwiches

Sampled the Bourbon and Bacon at the Suffolk Farmer’s Market one Saturday. I liked it and offered to buy a bottle. Unfortunately, they were out at the time. The gentleman selling, said that the early crowd had bought all of the bottles. So I had to wait a week to buy. Not to waste any time, I fired up the grill that day. Although a bit runner than I like my barbecue sauce, I was excited about the presence of bourbon flavor. Not overpowering, yet not lost. And ad for the bacon, it’s not bacon flavor. It is real bacon pieces. Paired well with chicken and roasted veggies. Will try with pork dishes next.
