Went here because I found a coupon on and we were going to the area for a weekend. The place has that dark, mountain lodge look with a beautiful fireplace. They had Jack Jones playing in the background and then later, some live jazz in the bar area. Very peaceful ambience. We were very pleased with our service. Jay was our server and he was attentive and knowledgeable. Our dishes were cleared promptly and refills given without asking. The food was very good as well. We were given some freshly baked rolls with butter that had a nice crust on the outside and fluffy on the inside. For an appetizer we got the fried green tomatoes with a cajun cream crawfish sauce. The tomatoes were thinly sliced and fried lightly and they were nicely accented by the slightly spicy sauce and tender crawfish. My husband got the caesar salad, which featured real smoked anchovies in a homemade caesar dressing which he loved! I got a salad with mixed greens, cranberries, and candied walnuts with a house made roasted tomato dressing which was also quite tasty. For an entrée’, I got the pasta primavera which was an ample pasta bowl of penne tossed with a plethora of wonderfully seasoned roasted red and orange peppers, green peas, tender fava beans, broccoli, and onions. The light herb sauce was perfect and the veggies were able perfectly cooked. My husband got the macadamia mountain trout in a citrus white sauce with a side of grilled asparagus and a cous cous pilaf. Suffice it to say that he cleaned his plate! The fish was tender and flaky, and perfectly accented by the sauce which had just the perfect balance of citrus. (My husband also had a chocolate martini which was nicely mixed and not overly sweet nor did it have too much alcohol.) If we are ever in Banner Elk, again, we would be delighted to visit the Hearthstone again!

This was LUNCH… I hear dinner is a step– up. but will have to get back to you! In addition to the normal specials, they have a daily Meat and 3 side special. Sunday is the Fried Chicken and Andouille sauce/gravy. The sides I ordered were creamy grits, collard greens, and cucumber, tomato, and onion salad. Took two pics, one is of the wine room in the group/party back-area. The plate pic, was actually my Dad’s plate, slightly better presentation. The boneless«fried chicken» was an ample portion 6 – 7 oz. The Andouille gravy did not have much taste, but was decent. The creamy grits were served at around room temperature and leaned towards clumpy rather than creamy, but all the same tasty. The collards were very good along with the cucumber, tomato, and onion salad. The salad was very clean tasting and flavorful. The service was friendly and professional. The ambiance and décor elegant-rustic. Rumor has the flatbreads are great. Definitely worth checking out.
