Don Pollo is a very solid selection for Peruvian food in Sunnyside. It is not perfect(more like a 3.5) — the cancha(toasted corn kernels) was undercooked and the service could be slow — but if you know what to order, you will get great value for the price. While not as quick as we would have liked, the waitresses were nonetheless very sweet, and the chicha(corn juice drink) we started with was refreshing. My whole squad ordered the pollo saltado — grilled chicken, onion, and tomato over fried potatoes with rice. So tasty! Chicken was thin, perfectly grilled, and seasoned just right. The onions and the fries came crisp, and the juice from the grilled chicken made for a perfect sauce for the rice. Speaking of sauce, Don Pollo’s green sauce for the chicken was also a knockout — creamy texture, spicy flavor. Aside from the cancha and the slow service, Don Pollo is nice to have in Sunnyside for solid Peruvian cuisine.

I had the trucha frita(fried trout), it’s very good especially when you pour over it some of the juice from the onion/veggie mixture that accompanies it.

Everything I tried tasted authentic and the service was great! The portions were extremely fair for the price! The alfajores were especially yummy.

The Solano Especial is a frequent visitor to our home. It’s easily big enough for two(we get the rice and beans and a side of plantains) and so delicious. The chicken is perfectly cooked, and I don’t know what they put in the rice and beans, but it’s magical stuff. When I’m sick I want Solano Especial. When I’m tired I want Solano Especial. Also, the delivery is super quick; we’ve been quoted 45 minutes and had it show up in under 15.

Worst of ALL of the chicken places in the area by far Very high prices for anything except rotisserie chicken, $ 12 for Chinese style fried rice, and most menu items $ 12 – 16 They ran out of their entire dessert menu at 8pm(except flan, blegh) AND fried chicken. Asked for extra green sauce and instead of maybe throwing in some extra as an apology for running out of 6 menu items… I got one measly container for a whole meal. Even in the restaurant they will give enough to dip about 2 fries in and then you’ll have to beg for more — completely stingy I live next door and delivery still took 40minutes. Worst of all, they still had to call me and ask me what apartment I was in… after my online order said exactly where i lived. I’ve eaten in the restaurant and its always empty except for a few«Regulars». When I went there, there was only one other table and the waitstaff STILL completely ignored me to chat with their neighborhood friends The food is pretty good but the staff here are completely incapable of running a business. Not coming back when there are plenty of awesome chicken places around the corner

I have ordered take out for here twice and both times the food has been excellent. I have ordered the whole rotisserie chicken twice with various sides. The Tostones are delicious not greasy and they give you enough to feed three people unlike Pio Pio Riko on Greenpoint which gives you a handful. The yellow rice is good also once it was Arrozz con Gandules and the other time in had some peas and carrots and both times in was delicious. I really like the Salchippas(sliced hot dogs and french fries) whats not to like about that? There sides are much bigger then Riko and cheaper as well. I don’t mean to bash Riko but the last two times I ordered from them they really shortchanged me on the quantity of the sides. So no reason for me to go there again. Oh and the woman at the counter I think her name is Erica is so sweet I promised her to come back and dine in.

Even though the dining room was fairly quiet on New Year’s Day, it looked like they were still doing a pretty brisk takeout business that day. The restaurant was very clean, well lit, and felt very welcoming. We had the Pollo Saltado and the Bistec a lo Pobre, and both were very flavorful and brought to the table relatively quickly. The entrees aren’t super cheap, but are still reasonably priced and the portions are sufficiently generous. As an added bonus, there’s a giant«Don Pollo» chicken sitting in one of the booths in the back. This seems like a good place for either dine-in or carry out, and I’m looking forward to going back in the future.

Food is very good, their Lomo saltado is one of the best I’ve tried, their staff is very friendly and I usually I get good service. However they get 2 stars thanx to management, I order a delivery a couple of days ago and the Manger messed up the directions I gave her to get to my place, after more than an hour wait and a bunch of calls(unanswerd ones, and also she hung up on me a couple of times) I finally got my food. The delivery guy was very apologetic, and cordial, while management was rude and seem like she didn’t care. After this ordeal I wrote an email to the company’s email I got from their website(is the first time I do such a thing, the hanging the phone up on me bothered me a lot) but no one ever answer me back, which again seem to me like very bad administration. I’m staying away from this place from now on…

Amazing staff and amazing food. I got a combo special of beef heart, big peruvian corn, and potatoes and I also got a purple corn drink. It was all delicious. This place is very authentic. My only reason for not giving it 5 stars is the pricing. I find that many Peruvian restaurants are a little over priced, but on the other hand, the amount of food you get with a meal is tremendous. I will definitely be telling people about this place.

Don Pollo Loco! Recognize one of the prime Peruvian restaurants on the south side of Sunnyside along Greenpoint serving portions large enough to expand the waistline. Don Pollo is priced lower than the well known Pio Pio and just as good or even better. The highlight dish, Solano Especial(½ smokey chicken, salad, and choice of rice/beans or french fries, rice/beans recommended) is the best value for the cost. If it’s your first time visiting I suggest you to order it. I’ve tried it three times and each experience was excellent. Another highlight dish is the Ceviche, cold seafood mix of shrimp, scallops, squid, and other seafood which is a little more expensive, but especially refreshing and matches well with the Solano Especial. Also to note the service does not have room for improvement. Friendly, quick, and personal and the best it could be. The server said«Welcome Back» on my 2nd visit. I recommend you to visit Don Pollo even if it is a little distance away from the subway stop. It’s worth it.

I was in the mood for chicken and wanted something that delivered. I browsed Unilocal as the reviews about the chicken were mostly positive. I ordered the Solano Combo ½ chicken, salad, and fries. The chicken was delicious. So much flavor and also a good portion and very satisfying. The skin was amazing! That’s where the positive review ends. The salad was standard and stuffed into a plastic container. The options for the combo were fries or rice an beans. I was craving fries so I got those as well. What I was delivered was what I like to call«boils.» There is no way these soggy mushy former potatoes can be called fries. When all you order is a two item combo(with a salad) and half isn’t good, it upsets the whole meal. Not to mention when you order a soda for $ 2 and they deliver you a can when you’re expecting a 20 oz, that’s a let down as well. Delivery was quick. I would order from here again but would probably just order the chicken a la carte and make my own sides or pick them up elsewhere.

My friend suggested we come here. I admit, I was a little reluctant about this place, but boy am I glad she took me here. I am relatively new to the Sunnyside/Woodside area, so I am always looking for new eating diggs. The portions are large so my friend and I shared a meal: ½ rotisserie chicken and french fries. This was one of the best rotissere chickens I’ve ever had. It was moist and full of flavor. I couldn’t get enough of the sauce that was served with it. I must have asked the server for at least three helpings lol. The french fries were crispy just the way I like it. The food was so good, I was craving it the next day. Pio Pio has nothing on Don Pollo when it comes to the chicken!

I can only say about the take out. We ALWAYS get the family special(Combo Don Pollo) — chicken is the BEST in the neighborhood. We tried every Pollo place in Sunnyside — their chickens are on the smaller size but they’re always tender… have beautiful color on the outside and feel fresher and tastier then all the competitors in Sunnyside(hands down). — The Peruvian Fried rice is amazing(and you can ask them to change the protein) — Their salads are not skimpy(unlike some places where they just put some lettuce, a tomato and a cucumber if you’re lucky)! We love it, has lots of color and all sorts of veggies, totally makes up for the fried rice you’re about to devour! Service at front is always good(they’ve even corrected orders before we leave to ensure their customers are happy). We’ve so far have never had a problem and they’re always friendly! The combo is good for a family and should feed everyone’s appetite. (PS The reason I also give it 5 stars unlike what other people say that there are cheaper/similar places in the area you have to be careful with places like Pio Pio Riko — because we’ve been there multiple times and it gives my significant other major stomach problems — we’ve NEVER had a bad reaction to their food here which says to the quality there. You may be cheaper for what seems similar but atleast here we don’t walk away with stomach aches!)

My mom had asked me to surprise her for Mother’s Day, I know she was in the mood for peruvian food so I was Unilocaling places to take her. Due to the pictures and a coworker’s recommendation, I decided to take a trip here with my family. I can honestly say the good was great NOT awesome but good enough to have me want to come back to try other dishes.

Today, I stumbled into a «Don Pollo» for a quick lunch. I found diverse fusion dishes for a menu, with an amazing ambassador as a waitstaff. My starter was chicken salad sandwiched between a mashed sweet potato, in and of itself a full tasty lunch. Next came out a dried potato stew, carapulcra, served with rice. I was immediately reminded of a tasty jumbalaya, but with very different spices and the subtle touch of peanut. Busting to the seams, I was offered dessert of which I declined until my ambassador pitched me on cookies stuffed with dulce de leche, alfajores, my waistline may have regrets, but I do not!

I know some other commenters said this place was a bit pricey. But I found it in line with the value you get in similar restaurants in the neighborhood. Dishes were great. Fresh and well made. We ordered the fish ceviche, extra spicy, and it was fabulous. A full meal in and of itself, it came with steamed corn. We also had a small order of the chicken and it was delicious. Together our bill came to roughly $ 30 which I think is reasonable considering it was more than enough food for 2 hungry people. I also really enjoyed the green sauce. It was spicier than at other restaurants. Basically, I think this place is similar in quality and value to other local chicken spots. However, they aren’t afraid to use spices, which gives them a good score in my book. I’ll def be back!

This place is awesome! I was there on a Monday night with a friend so we have the entire place to ourselves. The owner is fantastic, professional and friendly. The food was amazing. I ordered half a chicken, rice, and beans. My friend had the same with fries. Salads was also very good. 0 complaints the entire time. I will come back again :) I don’t care if I paid more, it’s the service that counts!

Food sucked and the food was really expensive. You want good Peruvian food, go to Pio Pio Riko on 46th and Greenpoint or Wanka in Maspeth. I give two stars for décor and the service was ok.

This place just opened and I wanted to try it since I’m a fan of Peruvian food. Two coworkers and myself got the Combo Peru and a pitcher of lemonade. The combo consists of 1 whole chicken, order of fries, yellow rice and avocado salad. Everything was really good. The chicken was juicy and tender, the salad came with a good light dressing, the rice was cook to perfection. Even the lemonade was good. I’m glad they opened this restaurant in my neighborhood and cant wait to try their other dishes.
