I had studied piano with Jamie during the summer prior to my freshman year of college. I was required to take class piano for my music major degree, unless I tested out of the class. Upon hearing that, I came to Jamie so she could help me pass the test. I had previous but shaky piano experience, so I needed her help. She really brushed up my technique, phrasing, and articulation on the piano. And, thanks to her, I passed with flying colors. She was also a JOY to work with. Being a musician myself, I like Jamie’s approach to learning piano, and she makes it fun and rewarding.

She is a true virtuoso of the instrument and a fantastic music teacher. If you have a desire to start at the piano or want to return to it or music in general, Dr. J is a wonderful and patient piano instructor but also in music theory, history and appreciation, not surprising with her broad and extensive academic training She does have students of all ages and backgrounds and expertly tailors the teaching strategy according to the student. She is also a superb vocal accompanist and she has helped me in that area as well. I have been playing for about a year and can see good progress in many technical and artistic areas — I enjoy the practice and preparation for the lessons and did participate in the annual student piano recital this past summer [there may be a YouTube channel for the studio available soon with highlights from that event]. My only regret is not starting sooner — so if you have the interest and motivation, she can help pave a new road of musical playing that you might not thought possible — but it can happen with some consistent practice and playing.

If you are used to cringing at piano recitals because of poor performances, you won’t know what to make of Jamie’s student recitals. Her students are actually well prepared — each student plays music at an appropriate level of difficulty and plays it expressively, with few errors, and from memory. I have taken two years of lessons from Jamie, and my daughters have both taken many more. She helped all three of us make steady progress in musicality, technique, theory, and sight-reading. She is very good with children as well as adults. She has high expectations and got great results with us while making us proud of ourselves and not in the least miserable! She is gentle and persistent and has a good sense of humor. Dr. J is a professional with clear policies on pricing, cancellations, etc.

Jamie was my piano teacher when she was in Phoenix. I hadn’t play the piano over 20 years. I remember my fingers were weak and shaking when I played for her first time. She was kind and knew how to make a lesson enjoyable experience. She assigned me a few very effective exercises and monitor my progress patiently over the years. I often thought Jamie was like a good doctor — If I struggled over a passage, Jamie looked over, instantly analyzed the symptoms, and gave me full diagnosis with treatment plan(or quick cure). Her diagnosis was always spot on. What truly distinguishes her from the rest of the teachers is that she could help students see the direction and shape of the piece. Without those, we can never perform a piece great. It is critical for an advanced player as well as for a beginner. Speaking of a beginner, I remember shocked to find her young students phrasing with dynamics and everything in their performance. I did not learn to play it in phrases until I became an adult. I wish I had her as a child. Well at least I experienced her. I hope you can have her as your teacher. I miss her.
