Several months ago my employer held an ergonomics fair where local vendors displayed their products and services. Of interest to me was an offer to receive an ergonomics evaluation. Ralph Anderson, director of consulting services for PROActive Ergonomics was there to schedule appointments for the evaluation. He sent out an email requesting some preliminary information. My goals were to improve my posture, and to improve the occasional discomfort in my back and neck. We arranged to meet at my cubicle the following week. Questions like how often I keyboarded, moused, and telephoned were asked, and well as how frequently I took breaks. He measured my desk, chair and monitor height and asked about the type of correction my glasses had. He went through an extensive checklist of workstation and work practice observations, and took several pictures of my keyboarding and mousing technique and posture from various angles. His recommendations were to adjust the work surface and monitor to a higher level in order to improve my posture, since I was leaning my head forward. Fast forward four months to my follow up visit. I had been using the adjusted work surface, and felt better off during my daily activities at my workstation. He took some more pictures, and compared them with the ones from the initial visit; you can see the improvement! I still have some recurring back and neck pain, as this is not work related, but having correct posture on the job is a big plus in the long run.
