FYI– you will not see foxes(I’m an idiot). It’s an free observatory located in Markham Park that is open on Saturdays from sunset to midnight. It’s managed by a group called South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association and a few of the members set up their telescopes outside of the observatory in the grass by the parking lot. The actual observatory is small with two large telescopes and the volunteers will guide guests to step on a small ladder to view through the telescopes. The volunteers explain what can be seen through the telescope and will gladly give you more information on what can be seen throughout the night. I had the pleasure of chatting up Jim who was one of the members outside with his telescope. He was very friendly and offered lots of information about what was out there. I pointed out one bright star and he had a very thorough description of what it was, how far away it was and overall had tons of knowledge on the solar systems. Great for kids. You won’t spend too much time out there but it’s great to see that we have something so beautiful to offer for free on a Saturday night. I’ve lived here my entire life and just found out about this and I think it’s a hidden gem!
