Stumbled across this little gem while in Topsail. Best coffee on the island. Best baked goods on the island and best atmosphere. This is a cute boutique gift shop and bookstore as well with plenty to browse. I had a vanilla iced coffee that had just a hint of sweet and was so surprisingly good. We tried daily grind too and this places coffee blew them away! We shared a cranberry oatmeal cream pie and a cream cheese pastry. Again so good. Check this place out — you won’t be disappointed.

So pleased that I stumbled on this adorable shop! The iced coffee was delicious and came with ice cubes also made from coffee(brilliant!) and the desserts were divine. I had the jam bar(gluten free!) and my hubby had the salted Carmel brownie — both exceeded expectations. So good I had to go back the next day for seconds and also tried the snicker doodles. We will be frequenting Sugar Island!

Phenomenal. The service is friendly and the baked goods are hard to put words to. Her cinnamon rolls are amazing, but if you have the luck to be in town on a day she makes sticky buns, they are a must have. Macaroons, chocolate chip cookies, foccacia Fridays!!! Oh, and how scones should be required to taste. If you have any trouble choosing where to get a baked good while in the Surf City(or Jacksonville/Wilmington) areas, this is definitely where you should go. Her ingredients are of great quality and you can tell when you eat something at Sugar Island.

I literally come here once a week for coffee and the baked goods — ugh the baked goods! Wonderful woman works behind the counter, very friendly. Haven’t tried any other foods here but I’m sure they’re good. Everyone’s so nice and the place is so quaint!

Man this place has the best everything! My family visits every year and we always race to the bakery to get there scones. Their scones are the BEST I’ve ever had! I have been getting their delicious pumpkin granola the past two years as well. A family favorite is their chocolate chip cookies. I recommend you stop their at the beginning of every vacation and stock up for the week. Check out the new upstairs seating area too.

Homemade delicious goodies with personalized and friendly customer service! We had to stop in and check it out based upon the reviews and local recommendations. Everything was very yummy but my personal favorites were the pumpkin whoopie pie and the caramel pound cake

I just can’t get over how wonderful this place is. From the customer service, to the price, to the TASTE you won’t find any better! My personal favorite are the jam bars but I haven’t tried anything less than amazing. If you’re anywhere close then make an effort to stop by!

What an amazing bakery! I had a blueberry kuchen that was a delicious cross between a coffee cake, a breakfast pastry and a dessert. Moist, rich, with just enough sugary topping to satisfy a sweet tooth. The chocolate chip cookie was a perfect blend of chewy and crispy and for those chocolate chip cookie aficionados out there, you know that is really hard to find. This bakery has the goods and from what I can tell everything is very special indeed.

One of the best parts of a vacation at the beach is having that one aunt or uncle who gets up early, finds a great local bakery and brings back a ton of goodies before you’ve even woken up. If you’re at Topsail and you want to be that relative that makes everyone’s day this is the place to go. Load up with huge, delicious cinnamon buns, scones, or anything really. It’s all delicious and handmade and will result in your entire family expressing their sincere gratitude for you making their morning.

Back in summer and Fall 2015. Same excellent selection and quality. Cinnamon rolls, an Italian bread that everyone inhaled, a quickly ordered banana bread/cream cheese frosting had guests fighting over crumbs. Great people, excellent service, a must visit. Children’s story time on Thurs. Limited hrs so check as soon as you can to have pies, cakes, and early morn pastries.

Wonderful job on homemade cakes for my baby shower! Just delicious! You can actually cut much smaller pieces and get more than 12 slices(which is average). We had the lemon zinger, raspberry pound cake with buttercream frosting and the old spice with cream cheese frosting. Yum! Yum! Yum! And they let me borrow three cake pedestals :)

My MIL threw me a baby shower and ordered our cake and cupcake from here. The cake is extraordinary. They baked it the morning of the event so it’s nice and fresh. The frosting and decoration comes out as requested. The sweets were a hit at our baby shower. Highly recommended for party. They will work with you for whatever you requested. Thank you for the amazing cake!

Been coming to Topsail for about 5 years now. I find this to be the best place for baked goods on the island because everything I’ve had tastes great, goes with my morning coffee, and is consistently good! My first taste was the Elvis, a banana carmel bread that was just sweet enough to complement my coffee but not so sweet that I had to recover from a sugar coma. I went back for more but found that the coffee cake of the day was a cherry crumble coffee cake. So I put in an order for the Elvis to pick up on my home journey a few days later and tried the cherry coffee cake. It was also very excellent, once again, perfect with my coffee. We also tried a cinnamon roll because, who could resist? It is definitely the largest cinnamon roll on the island and just the right amount of cinnamon sweetness ratio. No pecans or raisins in the roll, just good ol cinnamon and sugar and a sufficient drizzle of icing. Went back a third time to try the ice-cream cookies. FYI, they are made by a place in Wilmington. Love the way this place supports other local businesses. Will be saving that for dessert tonight. And also got a tart cherry cookie bar that I’m sure will be delicious with coffee tomorrow. I noticed that they have coffee at the store but I brought my own from home(Jo Van Gogh from Durham if anyone has heard of it, had the Sumatra lintong in a French press, so good!) so can’t say if I would recommend it or not, but it might be worth a try on my next visit. Thanks for being there, Sugar Island. Definitely made my mornings on the island something to dream about!

Love coming here! The Luna Pops would be enough, but there’s more. For the love of God, try the ice cream sandwiches; best ever! There’s coffee too. The bakery is really cute. Has an interesting selection of used books and locally made items. We’ve always been helped by the owner, who is super friendly. We end up chatting so long that I feel self-conscious like he must something else to do.

If you follow my reviews and know me, you know that I co-founded the largest and most popular food site on the internet. So, dear readers, know this: I have found bakery heaven, and it is in Surf City at Sugar Island Bakery! If you don’t eat — and fall in love with — the cinnamon rolls, then something is physically wrong with you… and you should see a doctor immediately. Get there at 10AM when they open, and don’t look for them after 1PM, as wiser people have bought them all by then. The pies. Pick one. Eat it. Smile. I loved picking up a little piece of local pottery while I was there, and sitting among a generous collection of cookbooks while sipping some tea. But, really, who is kidding who? I’ve returned every day I’ve been in Surf City for one reason: the baked goods are simply awesome. What a delightful find!

I bake a LOT. So I’m a tough customer to please in any bakery. This bakery gets my absolute top marks for anywhere I’ve been, stateside! I am ecstatic to have found it so early in our vacation here in Topsail. The cinnamon rolls have a nice toothsome texture and slightly chewy caramel on the bottom. The macaroon is a fun take on angel food cake — round drops stuffed with coconut. The apricot crumb bar has great flavor and perfect fruit with ideal texture. The kuchens are all great as well. The cinnamon roll is my favorite so far, but I skipped the coconut cake with plans to sneak back over — without my family — later in the trip. Don’t miss this gem. If you’re a stickler for great textures, enjoy!
