Our last night of vacation we wanted seafood but didn’t want the long wait. So we ordered take out at the local seafood market. I got the fried shrimp basket, hubby got the oyster po boy and daughter got the steamed shrimp basket. I also got a side order of fried oysters so I wouldn’t have to steal one off the sandwich. The seafood was definitely fresh and tender. My shrimp was very lightly battery and fries which meant I could actually taste the shrimp and not the grease. Same situation with the fried oysters. I really liked their cole slaw and I’m pretty picky. The only reason li gave it 4 stars was because the fries were a little soggy probably because it was take out and I didn’t get any tarter sauce though the menu said baskets came with it. With that said the quick service, fresh taste, and good price, I would definitely order again.

Best meal of our trip and that is saying something because we had a lot of great ones. All fresh, locally cought. No ocean view of and smells like fish because it is the real deal, a true fish market. A different kind of ambience. The owner came out and gave us the story on how he caught our dinner the night before. How cool is that! I would guess this is where the local people come when they want a great meal. Highly recommend the seafood nachos. Built on a bed of peta chips. Very unique. Staff was excellent, very friendly.

My wife was hesitant when we got out of the car. The place is in a strip mall next to a Dollar General– not exactly upscale. But the food was excellent. Got the stuffed grouper and my wife got the shrimp po boy. My son got the catfish po boy. Everything was fresh, fresh, fresh! Would certainly return during our next vacation. The owner even checked on us to make sure everything was good. It was!

Stopped in at opening time for some shrimp to grille for dinner. Staff very friendly and the seafood was fresh and of very good quality. Didn’t sample any of their prepared food but will give it a try soon.

FishMonger has amazing food, friendly service, and family affordable. If your looking for authentic sea food, this is the place to be. FishMonger is definitely not fancy and isn’t very«updated» it’s so to speak a «hole in the wall.» However the appearance definitely does not demean from the food or staff. Overall this place is fantastic!

After 3 visits I believe this place to be way over rated. In total I have seen 3 tables with customers. How busy can it be when the cook is also the cashier and waitress. There is no question you feel you are dinning in a retail fish store. Try Grilled Cheese and Crabcakes down the street and you will find the 30 min wait worthwhile.

So, we tried Fishmonger Seafood based on many customer reviews right here on Unilocal, and we’re not disappointed one bit! First off, don’t let the«store front» look fool you! Yes, this is a fish market, and not the most«pretty» place in town to sit down at. But the food is some of the best we’ve had in town. Fresh fish that is cooked perfect! The staff was very friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu items. I appreciated our waitressed input, which helped me make my final decision on my order. Bottom line– you can go other places and get a pretty table, and so-so food… but if you’re looking for some of the best food in town, come here! Won’t be disappointed!

Not what we thought it would be. Everyone has raved about the crab dip but I’m sorry we just didn’t think it was that great. After reading the reviews we had high expectations but turns out it was just average. Could taste the crab but expected large chunks of crab. Don’t get me wrong it was good just not great. Not a place to go for a nice dinner but they did have a great selection of what appeared to be fresh seafood to take home and cook.

5 stars for the food and the service. I had the haddock, the Maui spring rolls, and the lobster mac and cheese. The food was well seasoned, as opposed to the bland prep of most seafood places. It has the feel of a local secret dive, which is a good thing. High end food in a relaxed, fish store environment. Will return!

We decided to try fishmonger after reading Unilocal and Facebook reviews, and our party of 4 was extremely satisfied! Love the laid back atmosphere, if you’re looking for fancy shmancy this isn’t the place for you, but I’ll tell you, you are MISSINGOUT! This beats any restaurant around, for sure. We had the crab dip and shrimp /crab eggrolls for appetizer, just as delicious as the reviews claimed! My husband had the fish and chips, I had to take a bite it looked so good, and it was! The coleslaw was out of this world, and the fries seasoned very well. A good coleslaw will set any fish place apart, this is just one of the great things about fishmonger. I had the lump crab cakes, red mashed, and veggies. Also phenomenal! Mother in law had the crab stuffed grouper & also loved it. Father in law had the scallops basket, and I was shocked at how large and how many scallops he got! I also had to try those. Do I even need to explain how good they were, I mean I gave the place 5 stars! For a hole in the wall place, hands down the BEST seafood I have ever had. I look forward to eating here again before we head back home! Thank you fishmonger for living up to your reputation!

I would give this place a 3.5÷5 rating based on my experience. On our visit to Myrtle Beach, I chose a local fish market to really experience the freshness of the seafood. The shop is located about a 10 minutes of a drive from the beach, so driving was not a hassle. It is located in the corner of a small outlet of stores and the parking is reasonable. Upon arrival, the ambiance was ok but I mean it’s a fish market so I was not expecting anything fancy. As we seated, our waiter was a kind gentlemen with a sense of dry humor. We told him we were from out of state and it didn’t seem like he cared(I mean I guess because they get a lot of people visiting). But we also asked him what is a good dish he recommends and he replied«I mean everything is good»(with a smart tone). Like I said he has a dry sense of humor but it wasn’t to my liking. When we asked what was popular at the shop, our waiter said the crab dip. We asked what it was and he explained and insisted we try it. Without our consent he just ordered it for us, which kind of irritated me. We ordered a fried mussel basket and salmon sammich for our main dish. The fried mussel basket and salmon sammich looked like any usual dish but you could taste the difference with freshness of the sea. Would recommend that the crab be thicker so customers could taste the crab more. Overall, a good restaurant to go to if you are looking for fresh seafood. Seafood buffets are popular down in Myrtle beach but like the waiter said, «Those restaurants get their supply from other places and are also frozen and are not local, like theirs.» It was a great choice to choosing this resturaunt and will be going back to local shops like Fishmongers for more fresh seafood!

The food here is not what you would expect give the location and the fact they sell fresh fish and such. We were greeted promptly by Charlie. He took the time to run through the menu answering all of our questions. We settled on Maui Shrimp Spring Rolls and Crab Cakes. The Spring Rolls were awesome. The teriyaki dipping sauce was thick and a bit sweet. It clung nicely to the spring roll. Very tasty. The Crab Cale was an 8 out of 10. The service was a 10. Will definitely be back!

Just had lunch here and it was pretty good. This is a very casual restaurant. Nothing fancy. The server was very nice and super knowledgable. Apparently it’s a good place to buy fish and do take out also. The silverware is plastic, wrapped up with a napkin. I had the Maui Shrimp rolls that were outstanding. I could have just eaten those for lunch and nothing else. They were served with teriyaki sauce. Yum! I also had the Crab Cakes and French Fries. The Crab Cakes were good too. The place doesn’t stay open late, so you really need to stop for lunch or an early dinner. They’re thinking about changing their hours later in the summer to stay open longer.

Great bunch of guys. Amazing food. We sat down and asked for dealers choices and wasn’t disappointed. Skip the joints nearby, this is where you get fresh done right.

A small, family-run shop immediately off of the divided highway with two seafood cases up front where you order(though these don’t contain everything available to order). This fishmonger’s is, rightfully, the fish equivalent of a righteous deli. Definitely the kind of place one wants to support as a customer: local, knowledgeable(and free with advice), helpful, and just, well, yummy. There are about eight tables for at least four each(but a load of free space in the center of the dining area — don’t worry about it being cramped, it isn’t). Good Po’ Boys. Decent bread(would be better after a minute on a flat top or in a toaster for this purpose, but that may be a bit too restaurant-y). For carry-out orders, remoulade for the sandwich comes on the side, keeping the untoasted bread from getting soggy(YAY!). Really fresh cabbage-based coleslaw — wasn’t soggy, overdressed, or old and had a perfectly craveable flavor — really liked. Fries could have benefitted from a little longer in the fryer, and a minute or two cool down before being clamshelled. The extra shake of pepper was pretty tasty. I do, though, wish there was a regular substitute for fries with meals. Even when they’re great, there are lots of sides I’d prefer over fries. Respectfully, there is such a thing as too much Old Bay. If it’s caking, it’s too much, no matter what one thinks of the Red Sox(and, for the record, it wasn’t actually a Red Sox hat). Steamed items ordered were so low sodium(fair enough) it impacts flavor. My point in mentioning is that if you don’t require low sodium preparation, you may want to pick another prep for better flavor. I think if I was headed back, I’d go with grilled local fish /shrimpies and fried bits and pieces for the Po Boys, especially. Didn’t try conch fritters, so that’s on my list, too. FishMonger Seafood is easy to miss, in both senses. Look forward to visits in the fall.

Ignore the exterior, the strip mall, the bare bones decorating. The food here is astounding. First, regardless of whatever else you get, start with the crab dip, large, and ask for two loaves of bread(the second is a dollar. You don’t care. I promise). My daughter had the fried grouper and it was fantastic. The fries were nice and crunchy. I had the wasabi scallops, and they were great, too. But two weeks later, we’re both still dreaming about that crab dip! The service is fun. It’s kind of a Seattle Fish Market vibe-very playful. BIGHINT: bring cash in order to tip. Their point-of-sale system is not set up to add a tip to your bill. We went next door to Dollar General, bought some breath mints & got cash back which seems to be almost expected behavior. If you’re in Myrtle Beach or Charleston, this is an easy drive. You will not be disappointed. My daughter is headed to the College of Charleston in the fall, and honestly another visit here is highly anticipated!

We wanted to get off the beaten path with all of the Calabash Seafood buffets. As far as I’m concerned buffets not only attract tourists with very little distinguishing taste but also have to cut corners on quality because the focus is on sheer quantity. i chose Fishmonger because the reviews were very positive, it was a smaller place that could be overlooked, and it sounded like the focus was on fresh and quality. We were not disappointed! Much of what they serve is fresh, caught locally with the exception of shrimp, crab and salmon. The style of cooking has a cajun influence(they even serve beignets and chicken & waffles)! I had creole sea bass and my wife had tilefish with a crab sauce on top. Both were amazing! My son had king crab and he was in heaven. We even had a chance to speak with the owners who also do the cooking. Absolutely amazing! You can settle for something that is mass produced and deep fried but if you want seafood that is done well then think about heading out to Fishmonger!

Don’t let the outside appearance fool you! This restaurant has the best seafood in Surfside Beach… We will be back! Thank you Louie & Misty! We were not disappointed the second time we ate here! Hubby had the haddock basket with the fries. I had the carb cake basket with the seasoned veggies & the mashed potatoes, it was fantastic! And to Louie & Misty, thank you again for a very delicious meal & making us feel like family. And we will be back the next time we’re in this area… Thank you.
