My favorite place for a cuppa on the Northside. They serve local, hormone-free milk from Byrne Dairy, probably one of the only shops in town that does. They also have good pastries and bagels. Sunny location, on a relatively quiet section of Pearl Street between the 81 North onramp and Columbus Bakery. There are a few tables and a nice counter by the window. Technically, this is their main location. It’s also easy to park, whether you’re staying or just running in for a to-go order. The baristas are consistently friendly. The clientele is a mix, with old Italian-Ameican crowd, middle-aged business people, and a few young people. It has a neighborhood vibe. When I lived a couple blocks away I’d often stop for coffee and a bagel. At $ 4.50, it’s a steal. The coffee itself isn’t my favorite in town — it’s on the acidic side — and while that never keeps me away, I don’t buy beans here. Freedom is a stone’s throw from St. Joseph’s Hospital. During the daytime, you can head out the back, by the ER entrance, and walk down Laurel Street to Salina, then make the slight left on Pearl.
