Honestly, the best seafood place I’ve tried in a long time and I’ve had fresh seafood from many spots along the actual east coast. I had the fried haddock sandwhich and I loved the breading, would’ve liked to have tried the smashed peas but the roasted carrots were a delish alternative ! Great prices, and cool logo idea with the stamp on your bag… Very NYC-like !!

I ordered take out from here today after wanting to try it for months… and it was exactly what I hoped it would be! I ordered the crispy shrimp po boy which came fries and coleslaw. All were amazing. The four shrimp were huge and the dressing used on the roll was fantastic, the fries were fresh and crispy and the coleslaw was unlike anything I’ve had, maybe kind of pickle-y; so good! I will definitely be back!

Very good fish and I am picky! This was different than Doug’s in Skaneateles, but just as good. The crust on the fish is amazing. Tarter sauce was different but very good. I also had potato salad and coleslaw. The PS was very good and flavorful, more German style. The coleslaw was good but different from traditional, a little spicy. The people I was with also had a shrimp po boy and Mac salad. They all reported they like them. The atmosphere is cool. Very clean and well organized. Has an industrial meets antique vibe which I really liked. Good was also done in 5 minutes for 4 people. Definitely will go again!!!

The One Great Lunch(or Dinner) In Solvay Ok I know Solvay — but this place is fantastic and not to be missed! We are transplants(via NYC) from Boston Metro area. So haddock, lobster rolls, fries and slaw were a stable of life in MA. We have spent two years searching here for a good fish fry. This place is every bit as good as the our go-to places in Boston or the South Shore. Those of you who frequented Otro Cinco when it was new on Walton street may remember Giovanni G the chief /owner of The Fish Friar. His food here is every bit as wonderful as it was at Otro Cinco. Giovanni has a line to the best and freshest fish in New England — his stuff comes direct from the docks in Maine. We came for lunch on a Tuesday. Sadly the haddock shipment had not yet arrived. So I had a crispy shrimp po’boy and my husband had the cold lobster roll. We stuck with the standard — fries and slaw. I usually just taste the slaw and pass on it. This stuff was amazing and fresh as could be. The fries were perfect — crispy outside and soft on the inside. The shrimp — were large and breading was wonderful — with just the right spice. The pickled onions — a marvel. There was a special place in Aquinnah, Ma on the Gay Head Cliff that sold some of the best lobster rolls around. The Fish Friar’s lobster roll beats it with a stick. The only think missing was the butter grilled roll. I can’t wait to go back and try the mushy peas and haddock. At the moment no wine or beer license. Apparently, back in March when I wrote the above — I never posted it. We went back this weekend. I had as promised the haddock plate, with mushy peas and fries. Everything was perfect. Get to the Fish Friar — these guys deserve our support.

So good in every way. The owner was so nice and hospitable. We were expecting a sit down place but they still made us feel welcome and gave us samples of various dishes. Every dish was amazing. Better than Doug’s fish fry. Perfect flavoring and perfect cook. Hope this place succeeds and gets more locations!

I went to Fish Fryer expecting fresh fish and reasonably priced products, unfortunately those expectations were not delivered. I ordered the lobster roll and was was a little bummed to discover my lobster was over cooked with that famous rubbery tough texture. My roll was slightly soggy and the only flavour I tasted was the over powering sweetness of the roll. The fries were good but there was too much salt on the fires for my taste. My uncle ordered the haddock platter with fries, though as delicious as that sounds I sampled a taste of the«fresh Atlantic haddock» to discover that it tasted very much frozen; the fillet was pre-portioned, there was no fresh Atlantic taste, and the breading was similar to what you’d find in a box of frozen fish fillets from Walmart. Coleslaw was more salty than anything else and had no fresh flavour. The tarter sauce had the same problem, too salty. And the tarter sauce had a taste of dill, no pickles or any other signature spices, just dill season and salt. Prices were too high for low quality. In my opinion this was not the best seafood restaurant in town, that title belongs to Fish Cover. Fish Fryer is a nice little convenient place but In my opinion their product is not at all satisfying.

Folks fish fry don’t get much better than this place ! It’s a breath of fresh air over a normal boring typical fish fry. Fresh cut fries, the dill tarter sauce is amazing, lots of other unique side dishes, po boys, lobster rolls(hot and cold) and the breading is a notch above all places here !

Ordered the haddock dinner. It was pretty good although I wasn’t a fan of their«tarter sauce» About a ten minute wait but is expected on a Friday.

After reading reviews here and elsewhere, I had high expectations. It was only okay for me. The wait was long, which I expected on a Friday night during Lent, but a bunch of people that ordered after us got their food so much faster. We got the shrimp po boy, fries and potato salad(out of coleslaw). Nothing about the sides wowed me. The shrimp themselves were huge, 4 in the roll. I did not care for their sauce on them or the pickled onions. I prefer more of a remoulade type sauce on my po boys, but that is just me. We also got some fried fish. It was also just ok. Super thin filets. Breading was different but nothing outstanding. A little greasy. We will give it another shot. I’d like to try the lobster rolls.

Great food and very inviting atmosphere! Went here for dinner with a friend; we both got the warm lobster roll. The lobster roll was definitely a contender with something you would find on the coast of Maine. The fries were perfectly done. The cole slaw was a pleasant surprise(it seems at most places, cole slaw is an after thought).

I got fried haddock sandwich w fries and coleslaw. Was it good? Does the pope shit in the woods? You know it. My date got shrimp po’boy w fries and coleslaw. Was it good? Does the pope… wait, I already used that line. Just, yes. Very effing good.

The fish is so fresh and the sides are made from scratch. More importantly, the people who own the place are very warm and really care.

We ordered take out from the Fish Friar and it was very very good. We had the shrimp dinner and the haddock dinner. The shrimp were awesome, BIG shrimp, great breading. Slaw was better than any I’ve had locally and mushy peas are an interesting treat. We all loved them and I’m going to try to make smashed peas at home… maybe with less black pepper, but it’s a clearly inspired dish. The fried fish is good, the breading was so good, crunchy. It reminded me of my Grandpa Eunuchs recipe, some ritz crackers maybe??? and perfect seasoning. You want French fries? Get them here. I’m serious, they’re good. They may be reason alone for us to order again. The inside of the Friar is immaculate without a dust web to be seen in the shinny sheet metal kitchen. A reclaimed door serves as a community table, and they obviously have good ventilation and clean oil because it smells good there– not like… well…fried fish? Lol I’d stay and eat sometime, but it’s def a take out joint. A new go to fish place in the Solvay, Westvale, Camillus, area.

Great food at a great price point. My sister and I had the crispy shrimp po’ boys recommended by the owner, which were amazing. My husband had the fried haddock sandwich, which I need to try next! We were all raving about the mushy peas. Coleslaw is of the classy variety: fresh and crunchy, not soggy with mayo. We live in Brooklyn, and have pretty good selection when it comes to restaurants and take-out. We don’t have anything like the Fish Friar close-by, but if we did we would be regulars! Don’t pass this place up!

Saw a sign, downtown so I checked out the website and decided to give it a try. Glad I did. The broiled haddock was cooked perfectly, and the peas and carrots were amazing. Give this place a try.

This restaurant has been open for 2 months and it is GREAT! My husband’s version of this review: quick, cheap(he means high value), tasty, filling! It’s a small restaurant with an open kitchen where they make your meal fresh. Everything is clean, well, lit, and modern looking. My husband and I both ordered fried haddock plates, which come with 2 sides. Fish: amazing! so light and flaky, the batter was well seasoned, crunchy but not too dry, not overly-breaded Sides we had: Fries: crispy but moist inside french fries, salted with sea salt chunks Coleslaw: colorful, fresh, not overly mayonnaise-y which was a huge plus Rice pilaf: seasoned well, not mushy The haddock plate with two sides + tartar sauce was of great value at $ 10 Of note: If you want drinks, you’ll have to purchase them — they don’t do free water/cup water. We will definitely be back here when we want fish fry!

BESTFISHFRYINTOWN! These guys are a breath of fresh air among the countless fish fry relics in the area. As a stark contrast these aging establishments, the Fish Friar is spotlessly clean, smells enticing, has incredible service, and uses fresh ingredients! It’s apparent that these guys have expert kitchen experience: highly organized, clean, and expertly prepared food. Being a good Southern girl, I ordered the Fried Shrimp Po’ Boy with Fries and Coleslaw. My husband ordered the Fried Haddock Plate with Mac Salad, Coleslaw and a side of Fries. Everything was delicious! The shrimp and fish were incredibly fresh and perfectly cooked. The fried items were expertly prepared; not greasy at all and perfectly crisp. The Fries were awesome; no ketchup needed. Although if you do need ketchup, they offer sriracha ketchup and it’s delicious! We will DEFINITELY be back! I also love that they’re open every day and not just on Fridays!

Super friendly. Very fresh fish. Great prices. I had the fried haddock plate with mac salad, cole slaw and an extra side of fries. All was some of the best I’ve had in the area. My wife got the shrimp po’ boy. The shrimps were ridiculous huge and very tasty.

Insanely fresh and delicious. I’m new to Syracuse from NYC. I know this place is brand new. I hope they keep up the quality of the food when they get super popular, which they totally should be
