While I’ll always rate Tahoe as 5 stars, there are so many other places to go besides this one IF you are seeking to get away from crowds. But if you’ve got a bunch of kids and want to do a picnic with fairly easy access, come here. There are some nice grilling spots and grassy areas to plunk yourself down. It tends to get noisy and crowded, which I hate, but for convenience sake, it’s probably perfect for families who don’t want to hike more than 3 minutes if they are bringing everything but the kitchen sink for a day on the beach.

Limited parking, but nice grassy area with several picnic tables on upper terrace. From there walk down a few steps to the beach. Beach is small but clean and offers unparalleled views of The Lake Tahoe and snow capped Mt. Tallac in the background to the southwest and Heavenly ski slopes to the south. Overall a good place for a family but go down Highway 28 to Carnelian Bay if you have a bigger group.

One of my pet peeves is paying for parking. And perhaps as a reaction to the state budget crisis, I’ve observed that the daily access rate to California state parks has been climbing steadily the past few years. So while Kings Beach State Recreation Area is the grand attraction, you will pay $ 8 for parking. Or, you can just go a half mile down the road and park for free at North Tahoe Beach(across from Safeway) which is maintained by the California Tahoe Conservancy. This park was renovated in 2003, so the bathrooms are nice, there are beach volleyball courts and a couple picnic tables on a grassy bluff overlooking the beach. This is not what I would call an exciting beach since there are not a lot of other amenities. But the location is great and you can walk to a coffee house, restaurants or grab drinks and snacks at Safeway. And did I already mention that everything here is free? So we spent some time here on a Friday morning and practically had the place to ourselves. When we came back on Saturday afternoon things were much more crowded, but still not nearly as happening as Kings Beach. This entire area is what I would call family friendly. There are other Tahoe beaches that are better if you are looking for a younger party crowd or want to go au natural.
