Got there at 1 and sat down. We were completely ignored so it became a challenge to see how long it would take. At 120 the girl randomly brings us a tofu veggie dish to share. Then someone else came in and was offered menus so Gwen went up and retrieved a couple of menus. At 140 the girl was cleaning a nearby table so Gwen asks can we order? She takes our order, two small dishes and iced tea. Comes back in 5, don’t have one of dishes so Gwen switches to miso soup. Brings miso in 10 but no bowls. Monk at counter tells another girl to get us two bowls. Eventually veggie nut dish arrives, no tea. Food was pretty good, price for two dishes and one Med soup $ 20. Hot tip, if you go there, be demanding and state explicitly what you want. Repeat as needed. Do not go if you are in a hurry. Do visit the temple.

I had manifested a random ride for a small festival in Mendocino. It had been a struggle finding someone who could drop me off at the festival. My ride had one condition though. We had to go to the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas for lunch. Agreed. My ride had discovered City of Ten Thousand Buddhas on a car trip a couple of years back. He now made it a tradition whenever he was in the area to stop into the unique temple grounds to eat at the darling Jyun Kang Vegetarian Restaurant which resides there. City of Ten Thousand Buddhas is one of the first Chinese Zen Buddhist temples in the United States, and it is one of the largest Buddhist communities in the Western Hemisphere. Originally the site housed the Mendocino State Hospital. The Dharma Realm Buddhist Association purchased the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas site in 1974. Today the city abides by the vinaya Buddhist monastic code and it is graced by captivating serenity, as well as a random assortment of monks, students, and wandering wildlife(information taken from ). The Jyun Kang Vegetarian Restaurant was such a welcomed stop along my festival journey. The food was delicious, affordable, nourishing and organic. The staff were unbelievably kind. Most of the produce is grown by the temple itself and all of the dishes are made with an abundance of good intentions. It is cash only. My manifested adventure to City of Ten Thousand Buddhas was the perfect way to get centered and fed for the musical adventures that unfolded at Hickey Fest that weekend. Trust.

The house of ten thousand Buddhas was an old abandoned hospital that was purchased in the seventies and has been incredibly transformed into a school to teach one lineage of Buddhism. The staff I met was cheerful, helpful, laughing, and working hard to make the facility even nicer to accommodate the people that are here as they continue their practice on a day to day basis. The small museum in the administration building is interesting if you want to know any of the history of this lineage, otherwise it will be some artifacts, and just old things. The grounds are spacious. The roads and walkways are wide with plenty of room to stroll. As you enter you are greeted by a huge Chinese gate that you drive beneath on your way to the visitor sign in at the administration /museum building. The Hall of ten thousand Buddhas is quite a vortex of energy. To sit and meditate there, well it’s quite powerful. There are gold Buddhas adorning wall row after row after row after row after row. Impressive as you sit and absorb this energy, people come in pay their respects, bow and pray move on about their day. It is a very impressive room and not to be missed. For me it was an overwhelming experience to consider all the good work that has gone on at this facility the energy was very powerful all I can say is triple wow! The good vibrations lasted long after my departure from this energy vortex.

Located at such a distant city/town, I can see why it’s a great place to built a temple. The temple took over what used to be one of the first mental hospital/asylum. I come here every half a year to pray at the temple. It has such a welcoming and peaceful vibe. You can also choose to live if you want to spend a peaceful weekend meditating. Also, I love eating at the temples restaurant as everything is organically grown and msg free, cooked by the monks. Overall, a great place to escape from the city life. However, it is a really long drive so be prepared!

A nice little stop over on our way to Eureka from the Bay Area. This is a small little monastery with two schools and a little vegetarian café. What i loved about the place were the peacocks that were roaming about.
